Jets sign WR Breshad Perriman (One year, $8 M, $6 gt'd)

He wasn't bad he had to carry the load towards the end of the season and he had 3 straight 100 yard games (first ones in his career).  One of those he also had 3 tds (Detroit).   Although most fans were wanting him cut before that to gain an extra comp pick

Brady and Peyton seasons did. Maybe 2016 for the Saints? I don't think it's really fair to compare Jameis Winston to Brees, Peyton, or Brady though. Matthew Stafford is the only QB in his tier that has thrown for around 5000 yards.

That was as a number 3 to 2 top 10 WRs though

Having two top ten WRS didn't have the effect you would think. Other QBs, with lesser receiving options, targeted their top two options more often than Winston did with Evans and Godwin. Godwin and Evans were targeted 239 times compared Detroit's top two options in 2011,Calvin Johnson and Brandon Pettigrew, who were targeted 286 times. The next year when Stafford put up 4967 yards, the same two players were targeted 305 times. Demarius  Thomas and Eric Decker were also targeted more in during Manning's 2013 run. However, the Broncos and Lions third option during those years was targeted more than Perriman. The Buccaneers chose to spread the ball rather than focus their targets on just the the top two options as you suggest.

Am I trippin'?  When did people start considering Breshad Perriman a good receiver lol I thought he was widely considered to be a bust...

Its Joe Douglas. He'll save the Jets. We keep getting told it. So Perriman must be great.

Ignoring the fact their free agency has been terrible apart from a couple of OK signings.

Not really an apples-to-apples comparison, though. Godwin missed nearly 20% of the offensive snaps. Evans 30%. If they both stayed healthy all year, the target distribution would be different. The Buccaneers also had two quality tight ends (something those, and most, offense lack) which muddies up the share amongst them. Add in the fact that Arians doesn’t really utilize his tight ends as primary receivers in his offenses and you’ll get what you saw.

Of course third options will benefit from having great 1-2 punches ahead of them.

The Jets have won FA so many times and ended up being trash. So saying that our FA has been terrible, that is fine cause the winners rarely end up being winners. We have so many holes that we can't just spend big on 2 players. Joe Douglas had spread the money around and is trying to increase depth and competition. Its all gonna be about how he drafts because the reason we are in a bad position is because Maccagnan was a terrible drafter and created a OL that was bottom 3 in NFL history.

Douglas effectively  landed 3 new starters on the OL through FA which was needed, whether Fant works out or not is to be seen but McGovern and Van Roten are upgrades over what we had. But Our OL was in a rough spot needing 5 new starters, no other team has that problem.  Spending big on 1 starter wouldn't have helped.

WR wasn't gonna be solved in FA but the draft. Anderson is average, hes nothing special basically a 1 trick pony.

We aren't going to be good next season, this team is in a rough spot and needs a good draft to set them up. Douglas took over a team that had many holes due to the past 2 GMs being among the worst in NFL history. Maccagnan was beyond bad. Idzik was truly terrible as well.  I'm just hoping they don't ruin Darnold with notgiving him help, the most help they can get him is in the draft.

And fans have a right to be hopeful about a change, our entire scouting department has been changed and hopefully they are making better decisions than in the past. Spending big on average players is not wise. The old Jets would have spent big on Byron Jones or James Bradberry, without question.  But better team construction is not spending huge on a CB. Spend on the OL and hopefully edge rush which we have ignored for a decade.

Winning FA does nothing for me, we were there last year signing CJ Mosley and LeVeon Bell. Doesn't equal success. We need to be better at drafting.
