Why is EDGE capitalized?

The reason we call it EDGE is because the NFL doesn't have a universal one like they do for DE, DT, OLB, LB, etc. When I look at rosters I use 4 positions to describe the front 7:

NT or Nose Tackle. Guys who can only play 0-2 tech in the interior

IDL or interior defensive lineman. Guys who could play as far in as the 1T or as far out as the 6T.

EDGE or Edge defenders. Guys who can play as far in as the 5T in some situations, but are better suited for either playing a 6T or farther out. Could also be stand up linebackers in the 3-4 off the edge.

LB or Off-ball linebackers. These are guys who are rarely rushing the passer off the edge or in general and are primarily your coverage linebackers.

However, the way the NFL does things:

A DT in the 4-3 can play similar techniques to a DE in the 3-4.

A DE in the 4-3 will play similar roles to an OLB in the 3-4.

Organizing these guys by function, especially under the draft lends makes a lot more sense. I just wish we had a universal code for it. Even if it was just ED. For edge defender.

It’s bugged me for years. It’s not an abbreviation, it’s not an acronym. So why is EDGE capitalized? This is the kind of hard hitting questions we need to ask around here.

If I can address this...

I think it's less about capitalization of EDGE... More on how nothing else describing a position is lowercase.

Do you see QB or Qb? Wr or WR? OLB or oLb?
