Thing is with Turan & Vidal they both effectively sat out half a season.

Your example with Vitolo is perfect though as they have loaned him out to Las Palmas.

@The LBC was suggesting the reverse to the Vitolo situation though.  He was asking if the following is possible:

Team A has a transfer ban.  They are interested in Player X from Team B.

Team C buys Player X from Team B, and then loans X to Team A as a way of getting around the ban (as The LBC mistakenly thought the ban meant transfer ban = can't buy players), but with a future purchase clause inserted into the loan at a higher price than C paid B.

In this scenario, C makes a small profit for "owning" the player for a year, but never playing him and Team A would have got around not being able to buy Player X.

However, because the "transfer ban" doesn't actually disallow teams from buying players (just playing them), the scenario doesn't work.

FWIW there is still a chance that Atletico buys Diego Costa and keeps him for the 6 months that he won't be able to play with them a la Turan/Vidal & Barca

Why wouldn't they just replicate the Vitolo signing?

Sign him and immediately loan him out to Milan for 6 months?

It's never good to have a player sitting ideal for 6 months.

Most of the reports that he might just stay and train in Madrid were earlier on in the summer when the only team publicly reported to be interested in a 6 month loan was a Chinese Super League team - and Diego Costa obviously doesn't want to go to China otherwise he could have just signed directly with them for a ridiculous wage.

Since then, Besiktas, and now Milan have been reported to be interested too, so things may have changed.

The major potential benefits I could see from sitting out for 6 months are:
- that it would allow him to get back into sufficient shape to play in Simeone's system (which is notoriously tough, and its not uncommon to see new signings doubled over at training and throwing up because of the effort El Profe puts them through)
- it would keep him fresh, so he'd be hitting peak mid-season form towards the end of the season and be fresh going into the World Cup next July
- because of his recurrent hamstring injuries, it would reduce the chances of them becoming an issue in the lead up to the WC

As the resident West Ham fan here, I really don't see this evolving into anything. Losing Lanzini would cut back any gains we made this transfer window. Plus Lanzini is a favorite of Slav so I really can't see any way this happens.
