The Detroit Lions signed their head coach to a multi-year extension this spring, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Saturday. The deal was previously undisclosed.

Caldwell has been Detroit's coach since 2014, compiling a 29-21 record through Week 2 of this season. He has taken the Lions to two playoff appearances in three-plus years at the helm, the most by a Lions coach since Bobby Ross in 1999.

Why?

I remember there was a time when it seemed like Caldwell getting fired was a done deal, but then they fired Lombardi, promoted JBC and the rest was history.

Idk, just seems like Detroit would be better off letting Caldwell go and promote either JBC or Austin.

Never understood why there was such ambivalence towards Caldwell. He has had a good coaching career thus far and ranks the upper tier of current coaches now

Might have something to do with never doing anything as a head coach at Wake Forrest. And then...up until his recent success with the Lions, he was known as the guy that was hired after Tony Dungy in Indianapolis that squandered the Colts chance to go 16-0 when he rested the starters in the last couple of games of the season. At least I think that is what happened. The Colts got to the Super Bowl that year though anyway. There was this perception that Peyton Manning was basically the coach by that time. Caldwell just didn't have anything in his career history where the casual person could say "oh that is why he is special". He was seen as the guy that was riding Peyton Manning's coattails.
