"drafted lynch but didn't exactly given him the keys" ........

The worst part of the Paxton Lynch experience is that we thought we had our franchise QB during the 2017 draft and passed up on trading up to take Watson or Mahomes. We could be the team that is set up to win multiple super bowls over the next decade in the division....but we're not. Of course those guys probably weren't Elway's cup of tea, anyways.

Are you talking about Mike? Kyle was interviewed for the job but Elway had already made up his mind with Vance.

To be accurate, Ellis was very much not thrilled with the prospect of bringing a Shanahan, father or son, back into the fold. They did have a predetermined preference for Vance but, Kyle's interview went so well, it made Elway pause. Ultimately, Vance was choice for a number of reasons but one of them very much was Ellis' discomfort with the Shanahan family.

Kyle blew everyone away during his Broncos interview - Ellis blocked the appointment because he didn't want a Shanahan in the building. He did the same the year after when Elway wanted to bring back Mike.

The Mike part is true and was confirmed. The Kyle part is you speculating.

Elway actually offered Mike the job. That never happened with Kyle. I’m sure Ellis had concerns but VJ was John’s target all along. This sounds a lot more like Elway covering his *** and trying to absolve himself of the horrendous VJ hire. That was his guy and he has to own it.

Remember, VJ was also his first choice as DC in 2015. The Bengals saved us when they blocked VJ from interviewing. Elway loved Vance Joseph.

If anything, drafting Lynch and not allowing him to immediately fall on his face was yet more malpractice. The “Trevor Siemian era” was a waste of everyone’s time.

To be fair, though - Elway & VJ did everything they could to give Lynch a chance PR-wise to take the job and run with it.  He just fell flat on his face in TC...both years.

The pick was the problem - Lynch was awful.   And to compound things from what @champ11 referred to - the pick that Elway was going to make if we got sniped for Lynch?  Chris Jones.   Triple ugh.

(And yes, the fact other teams wanted to move up for Lynch means Elway wasn't alone - but it's still a black mark in that era).

End of the day, who you invest in as HC and QB carries a weight larger than essentially any other decision you can make as GM. Elway made two F decisions. Anyone defending that portion of the Elway era is crazy.

And all that is sandwiched by a) trying to pay Brock Osweiler after watching him clearly have no talent for 4 years and b) giving Case Keenum a 2 year deal ... lol

God we deserve a good offense as fans

Honestly, it's a good lesson in how to build a team in the modern NFL. Elway tried to get WAY too cute by threading the needle between not wanting to actually rebuild, while trying to reload. He may have stumbled into Drew Lock to a certain extent, but this draft makes it very clear to me that he is invested and understands the path forward very clearly.

I don't know if it's so much a lesson in how to build a team in the modern NFL as much as it is a lesson in how not to. It was pure incompetence at all levels of the organization, IMO

I wouldn't say they "stumbled" into Drew Lock. Rumors abounded for months that he was someone Elway had his eye on for a long time. I found us selecting him to be zero surprise at all. In fact, when we traded down with the Steelers I told the wife that we were going to take Lock at 20.
