Bear with me Mock

This is my second to last mock.  (Also my first of the year)

In this mock I want to make a strength beyond strong and take the approach of building depth, adding playmakers, prepare for the future.  The game plan is build a team that’s explosive but that can also grind out yards and keep the other teams offense off the field.  This allows our D to stay fresh and more effective.

Trade: Detroit trades #3, a 2021 4th  and Jamal Agnew to Miami for #5, 39, 56, Josh Rosen 2021 5th.

This allows Miami to get the QB they want and still have 2 more 1st round picks.  Agnew is expendable on our team and gives them a cheap option for KR/PR and a back up Nickel.

Draft:

5.  Jeff Okudah, CB – Lockdown CB.  Our Secondary now has depth and playmakers at all levels.

35. Brandon Aiyuk, WR -We add a player that is recovering form surgery but should be able to open the season ready to play.  Aiyuk will slot in as our starting KR and PR.  He’ll also add depth/future slot player as well as our vertical speed threat that will open the box for our run game.  He will as have some gadget plays to get him involved early.  Adds an element to the offense that we don’t currently have and is a threat to score every time he touches the ball.

39. Jonathan Taylor ,RB – I think we would prefer Dobbins but Taylor has experience playing behind a FB and can start right away.  He also offers a homerun ability that we are missing (I’m not including Ty Johnson) we now have speed in the backfield and at WR.  Defenses will have to decide if they want to load the box or play back as they fear Aiyuk and our other WRs.  We now have a stable of RB to grind out games and attack defenses with a variety of styles.

56. Laviska Shenault, WR – He falls a bit because of the less than stellar combine, unrefined route running and offseason surgery.  I think this year he adds depth to the WR position while we scheme up plays for him as he learns the route tree.  He allows us to now be 5 deep at WR.  He might allow us to move Marvin Jones at the deadline if we need to.  He also gives the WR room a different type of player and will take over for Jones in 2021.

67. Curtis Weaver, Jack LB – Cole Kmet is there and Quinn thinks about it.  But ends up going with a pass rusher to add to Patricia’s defense.  The game plan is to have an offense that can score and defense that can attack teams trying to catch up therefore you need a pass rush.  Weaver is a player that is going to get slept on because of his body type but he is a player that fits Patricia’s defense.  Should have a year one impact as a rotational player.  Should develop into a Matt Judon type player

85. Tyler Biadasz IOL– Had a slightly down year but he will compete for the RG spot (might even compete with Dahl for the LG spot) and will add depth at LG, RG, and C.

109. Solomon Kindley IOL – Kindley slides and grab him.  We now have interior depth and he will compete immediately for the starting RG spot.

149. Braden Mann P – We get our Punter and add a starter/special  teams weapon with a 5th round pick.  He also has experience as a kick off specialist.

166. McTelvin Agim DL – Raw player that switched from End to interior DL.  Has great get off.  Should find some rotational snaps as a rookie, especially in passing down situations.

182. Trey Adams, OT – A litany of injuries probably make him go undrafted but Lions decided to take a swing on a player in the 6th who can be their number 4 tackle.  They feel they now have depth in the OT room to go into the season.

235. Blake Ferguson, LS – Quinn drafts another Long Snapper… will compete with Muhl for the spot.  Competition is always a good thing…right?

UDFA:

Glen Logan DT LSU- Upside DT.

Carter Coughlin EDGE MN – special teamer.  Hustle player with practice squad potential.

Kindle Vildor CB Georgia Southern -Practice squad player

unrealistic trade. no way Miami would do that....maybe Chargers...maybe..and im sorry. i hate your draft. really really bad. never ever ever in a million years would i use a 2nd rd for a kr/pr...never would i draft a rb that early...then another slow WR...from....Colorado??? ran 4.58 40....did you even try??

I would rather keep our 4th next year and not get Rosen.  Other than that I like the picks but may be overkill on WR that early.  But I wouldnt be mad with those two names.

I dont see Weaver lasting that long.  I think he ends up going late round 1. So I would be quite excited if this worked out.

This mock is just a different approach to building our team.  That's why I said second to last.  Wanted to try something different.  The strategy is the best defense is a good offense.

As for the trade why wouldn't Miami do it?  They accumulated all those picks for a reason.  Plus it happens all the time.  Look no further than the Jets trading up from 6 to 3 for Sam Darnold just a couple of years ago.  They gave up 3 2nd round picks plus the number 6th overall pick to move up 3 spots.  Plus I believe other than being picked number one overall I think Haskins is the only QB in the last 5 years or so that a team didn't trade up to get.  Two second round picks is nothing in a bidding war for a QB.

As for the picks.  Aiyuk would get on the field immediately and give us a weapon on special teams.  He would also be a deep threat that stretches the field - something we don't currently have unless you think Marvin Hall is that player.  I don't.  He's electric.

RB in the second that's a personal preference.  I know a lot of people say not to take one before the 5th round or whatever round they think, but having a dominant run game to pair with this offense is far more valuable to me than a mid tear pick your position player.  plus the add pick allows us to take the player (or at least that's my justification for it)

As for Shenault I think he would be worth gamble.  remember we have ZERO WR on the roster next year.  ZERO.  unless you plan on signing/drafting like 5 WR next year I would think you should try and get one or two this year.  And as for this year, Amendola is an old man who probably won't make it through the year and Marvin i don't believe has finished the last couple it would be nice to have a replacement ready to go.  Plus think Bevell in MN.  Think Percy Harvin.  That's what Shenault gives you.  There's a ton of successful WR especially big body WR that have been ultra successful in the NFL who run that speed.  Also I think the times at the combine are way off this year because of the schedule.  No one seemed to run well.

The long snapper I wouldn't really take.  I'm just throwing some names out there for fun.  I mean it's a 7th round pick that probably won't make the team...

I didn't consider it a one for one and I'd rather as well.  Just trying to not make it seem so lopsided even though I believe we could really get more.  Yeah it's a little overkill but that was kind of the point.

I don't think Weaver goes in the first but I think he goes in the second, maybe even early second.  But every mock I'm seeing lately seems to have him there in the 3rd.  Thought maybe I was overrating him.
