salmar80
I can only imagine a Bears fan stumbling onto this thread to find us complaining about acquiring a successor to a MVP QB a year or few too early, after having enjoyed 30 years of great quarterbacking.😂

Dillon with hesitation was like dude he can sling it, don’t worry. He is hitting guys accurately and he can sling it. That's nice to hear. Not sure we heard anything positive about his accuracy from camp, so even a comment like this is kind of encouraging.

I still want to see one more ring with Rodgers but it will not be easy with the cap. If Love is the guy Gute thought he was when he made the move, we will be historically spoiled but even if he's not, I completely understand the attempt to get one before you need one. vegas492
I guess I feel like we aren't done in the QB room. It's easy to say that GB has gone from Favre to Rodgers to Love. But it wasn't quite that simple. Wolf drafted Qb's when he saw value. At one time we had Favre, Detmer, Brunell and Warner in camp. Before we even saw what we had in Rodgers, we drafted Brohm in the second round and Flynn in the 7'th (I think). Got Hundley in the 5'th or something like that once Rodgers was established. Not going to shock me if Gute does the same thing. When value presents itself at QB later in the draft......

Late round flyers make sense, it’s when you throw your first rounder, like Favre, Rodgers, Love or even a second rounder like Brohm, the microscope comes out. With all the Favre drama and then Aaron playing well, Brohm got lost in the noise a bit but that was a big swing and miss. High round busts happen all the time, especially at QB. If you can take a late pick that might develop into a starter or trade asset, you do it. The hard part is in game evaluation. If you’ve got a guy, your backup should never see the field and you can only play one at a time. I was happy to see Payton use Hill the way he did, that takes a lot of creativity and a coach who has some job security to tinker around with the QB position like that. craig
Don't love it, but OK *If* value is there. No problem with getting a late-round guy for practice squad and development. In case of any injury, or to develop for a couple of years and perhaps become backup or perhaps option in the post-Aaron world. Not super likely to get real scrimmage contributors at end of rounds 5 and 6 anyway.

You're going to have more whiffs than you are going to have hits at the top of the draft. Brohm was a combination of hedging their bets on Aaron Rodgers, but also the value. Remember, Brohm was viewed as a potential #1 overall pick the previous year.

Nobody is advocating using a high draft pick on a QB. We're talking about a Day 3 QB. Was it a waste to take Matt Hasselbeck and then deal him a few years to move up in the first round? Or taking Mark Brunnel in the 5th round only to trade him for a 3rd round pick a few years later?

I definitely agree Brohm was worth taking a swing at based on his perceived value, but he was a miss. Happens all the time and especially at QB. It’s hard to see how their game will translate to the pros. Supposedly the two levels of the game are getting more synced up and we have seen a recent upwelling of young, talented, proready QBs. The evolution of the position and the game will be interesting to see.

I mean, how many people really thought that Josh Allen would be the best QB to come out of the '18 class? I absolutely whiffed on that one. When has there last been a 3rd-day pick who was traded for significant value? Garappolo got value, but he was a 2nd-round guy. Jacoby Brisset got traded for somebody who had some perceived possible value, but he was a 3rd-rounder. Flynn got himself a fat contract, but we never got anything back. I'm sure I'm probably forgetting somebody, but I'm thinking there is negligible precedent for 3rd-day picks getting traded by their D+D team for much value? As Packer fans, we have a distant memory of Wolf using depth QB's as trade assets. I don't think that's as realistic now as under Wolf's old CBAs. They got an extra year of club control. Exhibition games will be getting reduced, right? In Wolf's era there were still two-a-days, and alter MM had his famous and productive QB schools every spring that helped developmental guys a lot and prepared them to actually perform and produce in camp and in exhibition games. In Wolf's era they did two-a-days in camp, and often held scores of practices during the season. With no QB schools, and so few practices during season or in camp either, I think the actual opportunity to develop is compressed. With fewer exhibition games and fewer open camp practices, the opportunity for scouts to observe is pinched. And with one less club-controlled year on rookie contract, the trade value shrivels. The success rate of Day 3 picks is already astronomically low. And for the record, I'm talking about 5th round picks or later. In the last five years, the Packers have drafted and developed MVS and Aaron Jones. We've only found 2 starters and a couple of decent depth players. You're likely not developing much later on. vegas492
K. So there aren't a lot of later round QB's who end up as worth anything. 3rd round found Wilson and Prescott. Still, that's not the fifth round. Flip Glennon in there, I think he had a little value at one time. 6'th round found Minshew. Maybe there was value there at one time. 6'th round also found Brady way back when. (Outlier alert.) Odds are low, but I've got no issue taking a flier on a guy in the later rounds versus UDFA's.
