DRAFT PICKS DISCUSSION

Recommended Posts

Thought I'd start a thread.

I can't lie, while both Claypool and Highsmith look like they have potential, I thought there were better players available.

I'm genuinely surprised we picked Claypool over Dobbins and Akers.

I'm not too broken up about missing Akers or Dobbins. I think Connor - Snell - Samuel is probably a fine group if we have an improved QB situation. Hopefully we get a people mover in the 4th. That will help tremendously.

I do kind of wonder if they aren't even looking at OG, though. I think they really like Wiz. Perhaps @jebrick is right and they will look OT, like Prince.

I’m assuming they’re going to add at OL with one of their 4ths....Villy/Feiler/Banner all FAs after season and Villy 32. They won’t let all 3 go but they won’t keep all 3 plus Pouncey and Decastro are 30 or nearing it.

They should be using a top 3 pick on OL every draft from this point forward.

They might also wanna see Snell in his 2nd year...Lev Bell drooped weight and got a lot better going into 2nd year.

I would take Simpson with our first 4 and the best OT with the second. I do want to see what Derwin Gray brings to the table. I remember he looked good last offseason.

Simpson, Bredeson, Biadasz (injury concerns) all interesting. Tega Wanogho still there. I’d love the next two picks to be R. Lawrence and J.Simpson.

Claypool and Highsmith strike me as guys we dont see the Steelers draft often -- bit players. I dont see either ever being a full time guy, but that doesnt mean they cant function at a high level at the NFL, provided you put them in their right spots.

Claypool should probably have a 6 route limit. The way the Seahawks used DK Metcalf should be the guide. Deep overs, drags, slot 7's, 6's, seams, and rails. That's pretty much it. Probably not athletic enough in short space to ever evolve into a number 1, but doesnt matter and he has the skillset to kill defenders if you want to worry about someone else (JuJu/DJ).

Highsmith, in the same vein, seems like he has upper level pass rusher ability, but not much else. So....who cares? Let him excel as a pass rusher. Use him as a spot rusher this year and potentially be a specialist/STer only moving forward.

I actually like this draft because I feel like too often we want all the qualities in a prospect and are willing to sacrifice someone who is a 10 at one thing, but only 4s at best in other qualities for someone who is a 6 across the board. I am perfectly fine with these two players, even if their ceiling is a #2 receiver and a #3 pass rusher. You need those guys too.

Oh, and they both have special teams qualities, which is phenomenally helpful in 2020.

I think Claypool could develop into an elite #2. He's perfect with JuJu and Diontae. We can attack all areas of the field with those three. Add in Washington and we've got a deadly group of pass catchers.

I feel good about Highsmith.  Watch his tape vs Clemson.  He made life hard for them going up against another OT that was drafted. Clemson always had Rb help on his side and he got good push on all plays.  Got one sack I think.

IMHO, Claypool has a ceiling of Plax and a floor of Kelvin Benjamin.  Kind of wide but his tape does not match the performance in the Underwear Olympics   So either the ND coaches are morons or he is much more limited than Megatron.

I can't comment much on their coaches but I know he had some crappy QBs throwing him the ball. Ian Brooks isn't very accurate.

I would also point out that he is just hitting his stride as a receiver. He came over from Canada, had to post highlights on Facebook to get recruiting attention, and they thought about making him a safety when he got to Notre Dame. He still has a ton of room to grow.

Yes.  room to grow so ceiling Plax

Wait so his ceiling isn’t Megatron?!?

I kid, I kid

I see his floor more as a Devin Funchess. Kelvin was lazy and ate his way out of the league, I don’t see that happening with Chase. At the very worst he will hop around the league as a big bodied red zone receiver. Funchess ran a 4.70 and Kelvin ran a 4.61 though.

I am hoping for a floor of Keyshawn Johnson.  Another TE sized Wr that ran a 4.4 but was better at stopping.  You can hope for Funchess but that is about as low as Benjamin.
