4.117 - MIN: DJ Wonnum EDGE/South Carolina

Recommended Posts

“His football intelligence is off the charts,” Muschamp said. “D.J. is a guy, you can walk in the meeting room and say, ‘You’re a curl/flat defender. Match two to the flat.’ You can talk through that, and it’s done. And in the National Football League, because of the collective bargaining agreement a while back, they’re limited on the field with what they can do, so that limits you sometimes schematically.

“He’s a guy that can learn and play multiple spots, but he also gives you special teams value.”

Muschamp pointed out how in his time with the Miami Dolphins, the staff tracked percentage of snaps as a measure of value. With his ability to remain on the field in three- of four-down looks, plus multiple special teams units, Wonnum might be able to show well there in the NFL.

Sounds like he was more to replace Weatherly than Griffen. Has a high motor and is very coachable, so Zimmer can get him to change up technique and use him in specific game pacakges.

Dang this is actually one of my favorite picks so far - and I've loved them all

I like seeing highlights of blocked field goals.

you would have enjoyed the Vikings in the 70's.

Twitter doesn't like the pick.

I'm not comparing him to Hunter, I just remember Twitter roasting that pick too

Don't know much about him but seems like there could have been better value at 117

He is the prototypical Vikings DE selection.  He has high physical traits but needs a lot of work on technique.

Twitter follows the consensus board like it’s the Bible.

To me, this pick lends further credence that we might be more multiple up front

Some odd front looks with he and Hunter rushing from the same side, Wonnum standing up as a mugged A-gap blitzer; this is high level, exciting stuff.

This would be no surprise with the hire of Dom Capers. Don't quote me on this but I believe he ran the 3-3-5 or something like that.

He's been a 3-4 and 4-3 under front guy throughout his career. I'd expect some wrinkles, but I doubt Zimmer changes his base defense.
