Joe Staley expected to retire

I remember 2007 was the first draft I got really into it and the Patriots traded this pick to the Niners. I was really disappointed they essentially gave away Joe Staley and only had Brandon Merriweather. Since then I have been especially fond of Staley. Thanks for the memories.

Did he retire knowing the Niners were going to take Williams? Would he have stayed if they couldn't get him?

Matt Maiocco (one of the best beat writers in the business) said a couple of days ago that he didn't think Staley was coming back. Was a rough season last year health wise.

Sounds like he told them ahead of the draft that he was retiring and waited for them to get the deal done to not make them look more desperate to make a deal/draft someone.

Yep, I have been saying this for weeks, and I thought that was why we traded buckner for #13 overall in a draft with 4 very good tackles

Felt like Staley knew he was done, the team knew, so they felt they had to trade one of their best young players in a position they have a surplus (DL) to get their LT of the future

Didn't happen exactly that way but I am happy with the result

When Matt Maiocco came out abou three or so weeks ago that Staley was 50/50 on coming back, it caught most by surprise. But Maiocco is as good as it gets from ANY beat writer in the league and is accurate as it gets. So he wouldn't have said that without having some intel on the situation. I think you are correct in that this has been known for a while but he kept quiet so the team didn't lose any leverage or come out looking desperate.

Can't blame Kyle Shanahan for being aggressive. I think they just made another trade...

Anyways...congrats on getting Trent.

I'd probably be this aggressive too, if I gave away 2 SB's.

You shouldn't really be trolling. For a myriad of reasons.
