SaveOurSonics
Alton Robinson // DE/LB // Syracuse SoS Scouting Report Strengths: Does an impressive job firing off the LOS at the snap of the ball. Presents his opponent with a small target zone as he maintains an attackers stance, otherwise avoiding becoming too upright at the initial POA. Plays with an excellent lightweight twitch that provides confidence that he could find success transitioning to a 34LB at the next level, this was backed up at the Combine as he posted a top-3 40 time, the top Shuttle time, & a top 3 Vert at his position group. Shows an NFL-ready ability to threaten tackles around the edge with his jump off the snap & acceleration, good enough bend to continue after initial punch. Considering athleticism & lack of length, his ideal fit would be with a 3-4 defense as a versatile, albeit developmental LB. Really good muscle profile, dense athlete who carries his weight well & should be an immediate option for snaps in the pros. Was forced to play one season of JUCO football but excelled like he should with 14 sacks. Weaknesses: Really lacks the length (height and arms are below threshold) you're looking for to project him as an every-down, high-potential 7-tech DE. Short arms are evident as he gets swallowed up by lengthy tackles & really struggles to cut the edge on speed rushes & disengage after the POA. Does not provide a notable power element to his game; too often gets stonewalled upon contact with limited leg drive & infrequently shows the ability to move his man off his mark, which further drives my hesitancy to project him for a 43DE role. Really limited array of pass rush moves, pretty much relies on the outside speed rush for any scent of success. Fairly serious character concerns that require deeper background checks, not one but two reported cases of what I'd call domestic violence, though nothing reported since joining Syracuse. Really flashed his JR season with 10 sacks, regressed to 5 his SR season against inferior competition. Takeaway: Alton is an athletic ball of clay with a high ceiling for serious development with NFL coaching. He'll need to work on strength and rush moves, but the athleticism is there to bank on him being a potential stud 34rLB.
animaltested
Sounds like a really good balance for Darrell Taylor. I figure 2020 is a redshirt year for him, getting all his reps on ST, as Irvin, Griffin and Mayowa get the bulk of pass rushing snaps. Thinking for 2021, Taylor - Reed - Green / Collier - Robinson is an intriguing NASCAR DIME group. Albeit, very much dependent on guys developing. SaveOurSonics
I had the exact same grade on Darrell Taylor and Alton Robinson. They are similar but polar opposites. Taylor has heavy hands and is very stout against the run. Alton is an athletic pass rusher who gets washed out against the run. I actually really like the pairing.
