Freddie Swain / WR / Florida

College football overreaction index, Week 6: Is Florida a playoff ...

SoS Scouting Report

Strengths: SLOT. Between his reported pain tolerance, willingness to go over the middle, and ability to challenge defenders in the YAC game, this is a tough football player. Hot and cold moments as a route runner, he does do a good job setting up defenders with hesitations and stutter steps. Very natural looking receiver of the football, tracks it well and comes off as a dependable security blanket for his QB. Despite limited catch totals, his TD rate was a ridiculous 22%. Nifty YAC receiver that combines angle knowledge with surprising strength. Savvy ability to find the open zone in a defense from the slot. Also known as a feisty special teamer. Ran a surprising 4.46 40 at the Combine which required a second look through his tape, carries some Doug Baldwin like potential. Coach Del Rio said he has one of the highest pain tolerances he's seen in a player. Jon Gruden commented on his practice habits at the East-West Shrine Game.

Weaknesses: Somewhat of a disappointing product during his time at Florida as a highly-touted high school prospect, was never a top option and really underwhelmed with less than 70 catches in 4 years. Overall he's a low ceiling athlete, doesn't come with the size-speed profile to get much better than what you see and fairly limited to the slot. Really dull in his route running, displays really stiff ankles when trying to cut and doesn't seem able to plant and burst. Isn't going to beat many DBs over the top, pretty average at best top-end speed. Notorious body catcher, albeit not to a detrimental effect on his receiving.

Takeaway: Swain is a potential diamond in the rough a la Doug Baldwin coming from a spread out Florida offense. He provides great savvy and toughness to translate into a high quality slot receiver.

Best thing about Swain is he has some decent return ability. Seattle had a bottom 5 worst kick return average and bottom 10 worst punt return average, and were at times marching out Lockett (#1 WR) to fill in. Just fail all around there.

Swain despite being a 6th round pick should make the team on the fact he can cover return duties, alone. GREAT way to end the draft.
