How are those Draft Picks Doing?: 2017 Edition

The old adage is that a draft takes 3 years to fully evaluate. How did your favorite team do?

1.10 Patrick Mahomes III QB TTU -  S++
Grade went beyond A class to S class. Thank the Good Lord everybody was sleeping on this kid. He’s got everything you could ever want in a QB, and a HOF coach to match. Sky’s the Limit.

2) Tanoh Kpassgnon DE Villanova - C

Solid rotational DE, got better as he continued to play traditional 43 DE as opposed to 34 OLB. Could have a breakout year coming up, Contract year always wins.

3) Kareem Hunt RB Toledo - C

More to do with Hunts idiocy than anything on the Chiefs. Can’t give it a F because that first season and a half was so good. Ah what could’ve been.

4) Jehu Acheson WR Michigan - F

Didnt last long is he still in the league? Might be on the Jets now.

5) Ukeme Eligwe LB Georgia Southern - F

Same as above only he’s on the Raiders now.

6) Leon McQuay S USC - F

No longer in the league after one season.

Only a couple picks have stuck around but that first one negates all the rest. Dorsey really struck it out the park with that trade and selection. Changed the course of Chiefs and League history. A+

New York Jets

Jamal Adams (A+) All Pro DB, best player at his position. Best Non-QB in the draft.

Marcus Maye (B) Has been good for us, wasn’t exactly a huge need and we passed on Dalvin Cook who should have been the pick IMO.

ArDarius Stewart LOL

Chad Hansen LOL

Jordan Leggett LOL

Dylan Donahue LOL

Elijah McGuire LOL

Jeremy Clark LOL

Derrick Jones LOL

Round 1 Pick 11 - Marshon Lattimore - Stepping in as a high end starter from day 1 earned him DROY honors. He's now among the best at his position. Exactly what you're looking for with your first pick.
Grade: A

Round 1 Pick 32 - Ryan Ramczyk - LT starter as a rookie out of camp, then moved over to RT after performing admirably in Armstead's absense. Now he's among the best at his position on the right side, we could've taken him at 11 and I'd still be elated with the selection.
Grade: A

Round 2 Pick 42 - Marcus Williams - Great deep safety, struggles with the run. Walked on as a starter.
Grade B+

Round 3 Pick 67 - Alvin Kamara - Stepping in as a high end starter from Day 1 earned him OROY honors. He's one of the best backs in the NFL and has a skill-set that should prolong his career compared to a between the tackles runner.
Grade: A

Round 3 Pick 76 - Alex Anzalone - Decent starter, great athlete for the position. Injury prone.
Grade: B

Round 3 Pick 106 - Trey Hendrickson - Great rotational player, gets pressure at a high rate. 4.5 sacks and 17 pressures last year playing behind Cam Jordan and Marcus Davenport
Grade: B+

Round 6 Pick 196 - Al-Quadin Muhammad - Camp body, didn't pan out. Went to Indy.
Grade: D

Overall Grade: A

Another franchise changing draft.

Good thing this was McKenzie’s last draft class. That guy had a horrible draft in 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016, and 2017. He got lucky in 2014 because Mack, Carr, and Gabe just fell into his lap as common sense picks.

Weird, weird 49er draft.

Needed a QB, could have had Mahomes or Watson, or could have gotten trubs, which is likely even worse than taking Solly.

Misfired on the early picks, picked everything up on the back end. Misfired on hand picked guys on offense, only to have them supplanted with super udfas the same year.

  1.  Solomon Thomas- oof
  2. Reuben Foster - double oof
  3. Akhello Witherspoon - solid third round pick. Made it through his contract, biggest problem being consistency issues. When he's good, he is good. Lot to prove this year
  4. CJ Beathard - oof. Superior UDFA same year; Nick Mullens
  5. Joe Williams - oof. Traded to to get him. The pick we traded up from was used on Marlon Mack, I believe. Never took a regular season snap. Superior UDFA same year, Matt Breida
  6. George Kittle - brick two first round picks, get an all pro in round 5. Sure, why not.
  7. Trent Taylor - could be a solid niche receiver, can never stay healthy. Superior UDFA same year, Kendrick Bourne
  8. DJ Jones- took him a couple years to cook, but he's a bit of a stud when he's on
  9. Pita Taumoepenu - nothing
  10. Adrian Colbert - started a piece of a year and didn't look bad, and then was just horrific his second year and released last treat

So just very weird. Supplemented by a weirdly strong UDFA class; Eric Magnuson spent two years with the team as a UDFA out of this class, Victor bolden made the squad as did Cole hikutuni for a small bit.

The class managed to find an all pro, but not from either of the first round picks, one of whom is already off the team. The team find a young QB and young rb, but not from the two it actually drafted.

Haha, ready?

1. Derek Rivers - BUST

2. Antonio Garcia - Medical BUST. Think Miami picked him up, and then cut him

3. Deatrich Wise - A role player, comes in on some passing downs. Guess the value is ok for where we drafted him. C

4. Connor McDermott - BUST. Picked up by NY and I'm not even sure if he plays

Overall - F

Vikings:

Dalvin Cook: B. Very good when healthy, but he's hardly ever healthy. Could be a top 5 back but I don't think his body can withstand the hits.

Pat Elflein: D. He was solid year 1, and still good when blocking downfield, but he gets demolished regularly by most DTs. Probably shouldn't be starting but maybe a good backup I guess.

Jaleel Johnson: C-. Never really developed after a stellar rookie preseason. Backup at best.

Ben Gedeon: C. WLB only play 30% of the snaps. He doesn't make any plays but he's not a liability.

Rodney Adams: F. Out of the league.

Danny Isidora. D+. We traded him so I guess he's viewed as depth. Meh.

Bucky Hodges: F. Thinks he's better than Rudolph but he's out of the league.

Stacy Coley: F. Out of the league.

Ifeadi Odenigbo:B. After being cut 3 times, he's set to start for us. Excellent 3rd DE last year who can rush from the edge or interior. Love this pick.

Elijah Lee: F. Got snatched up by SF and started due to injury. We should've never put him on the PS.

Jack Tocho: F. Out of the league.

So I guess D+/C- for us.

Round 1 Johnathan Allen - B+: A solid staple of our line. Probably hasn't dominated like some expected, but that was in a 3-4. We will see what happens in a 4-3. The best part is a lot of guys already see him as a leader of the defense. Great to see from a guy in his 3rd year.

Round 2 Ryan Anderson - D+: Maybe a defense switch will turn it around for him. He played okay at the end of the year, but hasn't done anything. Disappointing for a 2nd rounder. Wouldn't be surprised to see him cut this year at the end of preseason.

Round 3 Fabian Moreau - C+: He's been up and down. Injuries certainly haven't helped him at all. Shown flashes of good followed by some "oh no" moments. He'll get an opportunity to be the man this year.

Round 4 Samaje Perine - D-: I was wrong on this one. I thought he'd be solid. Fumbling issues got him off the team. He latched on to the Bengals and Dolphins last year.

Round 4 Montae Nicholson - C+: Had a pretty good start to his career, that just followed with on and off the field issues. He was cut this offseason. Someone should take a chance on him.

Round 5 Jeremy Sprinkle - C: Actually has a chance to be the starter this year. Unfortunately, that says more about our poor TE situation than anything. That said, it's his chance to improve this grade. He had chances last year too and just didn't use them.

Round 6 Chase Roullier - B+: Our starter at center. He's not a world beater, but getting a starter in the 6th round is always a solid take.

Round 6 Robert Davis - C: A training camp favorite, injuries have hindered him. Cut from the team, he is now with the stupid terrible awful Eagles.

Round 7 Josh Harvey-Clemons - B-: Still on the team. Special teams guy. Hasn't done much, but has stuck around for a 7th rounder. Therefore, that's gotta be at least a B-.

Round 7 Joshua Holsey - D: Off the team after two years.

Another franchise changing draft.

One of the best draft classes of the last decade. Jeez.

I guess you can argue the Chiefs is better as they got Mahomes whose just a ridiculous QB.

So we got an All-Pro TE, solid starting DT, solid backup QB, solid backup RB we flipped for a 5th round pick. Also a solid slot WR (Taylor) when healthy.

And we completely whiffed on 4 of our first 5 picks.

Scouting/development/coaching of late round picks/UDFA's has been solid for the Niners and a big reason why they're contenders.

That being said, there were so many players we could have taken in the 1st that could have helped more....Mahomes, Watson, CMC, Adams, Lattimore at 3. Ramcyzk, Baker, Cook at 30...or trade up 2 more spots for TJ Watt.

R1-15 S Malik Hooker B-

Has has some injury issues which kept off the field bit has been very good when healthy l. Last season his numbers fell becuase he wasn’t being targeted.

R2-46 CB Quincy Wilson D

Struggled to even be active on game day hecuase he isn’t a special teams player
traded to Jets for 2020 6th round pick (watch for a trend)

R3-80 DE/LB Tarell Basham F

Didn’t play much at all his rookie year and initially made the 53 in 2018 before being cut after waivers claims. Signed with Jets

R4-137 OL Zach Banner F

cut at final 53 cut downs to try to push into the practice squad but was claimed by the Browns, currently with Steelers

R-143 HB Marlon Mack B+

backed up Frank Gore his rookie year before becoming starter in 2018. He missed out on 1,000 yards rushing because he missed 4 games that year and then rushed for 1,100 yards last year after missing 2 games

R-144 DT Grover Stewart C

didn’t gain a starting spot until pushing Margus Hunt out this past season. With the addition of Buckner he will likely return to just run downs.

R5-158 CB Nate Hairston  C

played well his rookie year as the nickel corner but list the job to Kenny Moore and was traded to the Jets for a 2019 6th round pick

R5-161 LB Anthony Walker Jr B

Played well his first year but flourished next to fellow LB Darius Leonard totaling 100+ tackles this past season

4 starters, one bust and 3 players with the New Jersey Colts

All set in motion from that terrible Sam Bradford pick up
