Multiplying the Multiplicity of Mister Zimmer's Multiple Defense

Zim seems to like bringing in former HC’s

Raheem Morris (if he doesn’t get a HC job), Dan Quinn (more under front looks, cover-3 base), Matt Patricia (multiple front, man coverage base).

All different schools of thought than Zimmer’s quarters over front look.

DT - Jaleel Johnson & Shamar Stephen (both fits as over front 3Ts and neither very good at it). Armon Watts is a fit as an over front 3T as well, but could play an under 3T in heavy sets.  Pierce can play the 1T/0T in any front. James Lynch is an under front 3T or a 5T in an odd front.

DE - Odenigbo could play as a 3T in an under front, or a 5T in an under front, Hunter could play either the 5 or Leo in an under front. Wonnum is a classic under front Leo (Ngakoue, Clark, Avril) who has experience playing off the ball and as a rush in an odd front.

LB - One of Barr or Wilson will be gone. Kendrick’s is scheme diverse as a Mike and could play in anything. Barr could play Will or Sam in an under front, Jack or Rush in an odd front. Wilson is a scheme diverse Will.

The front is in a stage of transition and could go any way currently. Puts us in the position of being able to draft the best players available up front and MOLD the front to where they beat fit.

Given recent coaching moves, Zimmer doesn’t seem to interested in traveling outside of his way of thought.

Brought in an under front style, fire zone, special assistant this year. Pretty stark departure from what Zimmer has done.

please don’t snuff out the last of my hope for adaptability from our leading men.

The Vikings finished the 2020 season by allowing 63 total pass plays of 20 yards or more, which is the highest total allowed under Zimmer.

The previous high was 47 such plays allowed, which came a season ago in 2019.

Everson Griffen re-tweeted a fan asking him to come back to the Vikings. I’d take him back as a spark plug, situational pass rusher.

Honestly I’d take him back as a starter/time split with Odenigbo/Wonnum given the current options. Fills a hole pre-draft, kicks Odenigbo back down to a third down inside rusher.

All comes down to price and the other moves we make to free up cap space. Right now, we’re not in a position to bring in much other than salary/benefit deals.

23 sacks on the season is the fewest in team history.

Quite frankly, I blame Cousins.

Good point. Had Cousins led the offense to more points other teams would have been passing more and the Vikings rushers could have pinned their ears back on the pass rush knowing the other team was playing catch-up. Odenigbo, Wonnum, Mata'Afa, and the Vikings sack leader for the year, Ngakoue, could have each rolled up more sacks.

In fact, had Cousins led the team to even one more victory in the first six games Ngakoue may still be with the team and could have had plenty more sacks.

Clearly, it is all the fault of Kirk Cousins.
