One of the sticking points that it always hit was differentiating between probabilities of complex sentient lifeforms existing vs. microbial simple life and the far lesser conditions needed for the latter (denominator). Considering we've found complex lifeforms on our own planet thriving in some of the most harshest, oxygen deprived areas at the bottom of the oceans. It's hard to imagine with the limitless stars and planets (numerator) being so incredibly vast that simple microbial lifeforms don't exist out there. Anyway that was the crux.
