He only played 11 less games than Greg Coleman and has the highest yards per punt average for of anyone who has punted for more than 1 year in a Vikings' uniform. While I certainly understand the positional value of a quarterback over a punter, the fact that Kluwe had sustained success at his position for 8 years is going to trump a guy who potentially could have been a franchise QB but only lasted 1 year. That would be like seriously considering Sam Bradford over Greg Coleman as the best #8. Mitch Berger was much better than Kluwe. Kind of surprised we haven’t had many great players to wear number 5. I thought Bridgewater was on the verge of greatness, but that injury was gruesome and came at a very unfortunate time. Glad he’s getting his second chance to be a full- time starter this year. It’s truly a miracle comeback story.
SteelKing728
Kluwe is entertaining (I don't find him brainy, but rather just very weird) but I can't list him as a favorite for #4 or #5. Favre made magic for one year. He's the best to ever take that number. Even if 2010 was a bust.

Guest
Jim Gallery, K, 1990: Was on the roster for two games. Attempted zero kicks. Jay Walker, QB, 1996 - 1997: Appeared in one game in two seasons. Completed 2-of-2 passes for 31 yards. (Fun fact: Jay Walker has never once been arrested for jaywalking.) Bubby Brister, QB, 2000: Appeared in two games. Completed 10-of-20 passes for 82 yards and an interception. Hayden Epstein, K, 2002: Was a kickoff specialist for nine games. Released for failing to bring a note from his mother. Taylor Heinicke, QB, 2015: Never appeared in a regular season game. 6 is a terrible number for Vikings. I know that some had hope in Heinicke, but he never amounted to much for the Vikings. I believe that he played in some games for Carolina, but he didn't set the league on fire. His most memorable Viking moment? When he seriously cut up his foot kicking the glass out of a storm door! Bubby Brister was a starter for the Steelers and the Bronco's, but was pretty much Bubkus for the Vikings!! All Hail QB Jay Walker...he completed 100% of his passes as a Viking! Why was he ever let go??
RpMc
I think based on sheer pass attempts it goes to Brister

However, the standout for the Vikings who have worn number 5 is Teddy Bridgewater. He probably would be the franchise quarterback today if not for a freak knee injury during a preseason practice in 2016. Overall, Donovan McNabb had a highly successful career, but just not with the Vikings. Dan Bailey has an opportunity to bring greater acclaim to the digit. FWIW, I did find at least one other Viking player that wore the #5. Chad May. Of course, he never actually played in the regular season, but I remember having high hopes for him out of K-State way back when. Also, make sure to keep the name Gino Torretta in mind when you get to #13.

Of course, he couldn't help him with the 41-donut though...which reminds me of something very interesting...Daunte is only 6 months older than Tom Brady. SteelKing728
In 2018, didn't our punter, who we claimed off of waivers from Pittsburgh wear #6? Matt Wile Edited May 14, 2020 by SteelKing728

Matt Wile Yup: https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/uniform.cgi?number=6&team=min And going by AV he’s our best player to wear #6. Guest
Rick Danmeier (1977 - 1982) Tony Adams (1987) Fuad Reveiz (1990 - 1995) Randall Cunningham (1997 - 1999) Morten Andersen (2004) Tarvaris Jackson (2006 - 2010) Christian Ponder (2011 - 2014) Daniel Carlson (2018) Kaare Vedvik (2019) Nate Stanley (2020) Some interesting names on this list...mainly kickers and quarterbacks. While Morten Anderson only spent a season in Minnesota, he is the NFL's all-time scoring champ. Yet, for the Vikings, Fuad Reveiz was more important. The quarterbacks include Randall Cunningham, Tarvaris Jackson, and Christian Ponder. Cunningham gets my vote.
Cearbhall
Yeah, Cunningham is the clear choice for me even if he wasn't doing more than driving Denny's car.

I have a fondness for Fuad...it may just be because I liked pronouncing his name, but I think you do have to give it to Randall for the success he had (even if it was really for only one of those years). I also liked to see the strike guy mentioned (Tony Adams)...he was awful, but what do you expect when he was called off the street to play in the NFL during a players strike.
