I won’t lie, I absolutely hated the hire of Scott Turner. I think it would’ve been beneficial for the whole team if O’Connell stayed but whatever.

I'll wait and see on Turner but I didn't want O'Connell to go for Haskins sake.  They had a year together.

But isn’t the role you’re describing McKissic essentially, almost verbatim, the role we’re envisioning for Antonio Gibson? It just seems a little redundant to me.

I know Gibson is more of a project than a typical RB, but I really feel like taking snaps away from him in that role is undesirable. And if Gibson genuinely can’t play right now, I think that’s a big problem. I’m all for taking time to develop players at most positions, but I don’t think you can take a RB with what’s basically a 2nd round pick and then redshirt him — the shelf life is too short, the undesirability of resigning them long-term is too great.

I like McKissic as a player, actually. I thought it was a good solid signing to replace CT at a low cost. But then they went and paid a STEEP price to get an upgraded version of McKissic, and I’m just not sure there’s room for the older, cheaper version anymore.

I think McKissic is probably a lock, based on Rivera's comments below (about Gibson):

Quote

He’s an exciting prospect. We’re excited about this kid, man.

He’s a swiss army knife, obviously was playing a little bit of wide receiver and running back at Memphis. He’s a return specialist, he’s got good hands.

He’s 228 pounds, he runs fast, he plays fast, he’s got physicality to him. We really viewed him – where the excitement came – not only from the tape, in the background, in the character, how he’s wired.

Also, speaking with [Offensive Coordinator] Coach [Scott] Turner and how he’s going to utilize him along with the other backs. You know, it’s not just like a normal running back that you’re like, ‘okay, here’s his skillset.’ You can put him on the field with Adrian Peterson, with Derrius Guice, with J.D. McKissic. You can use this guy in a lot of different ways, so it opens up a lot of different options for our offense.

He’s a little bit bigger than Christian, but he’s got a skillset like Christian.

He’s shown some position flexibility playing in the slot, then he shows position flexibility playing in the backfield. Ran some wildcat with him behind the center taking direct snaps.

This is a very versatile, young football player that we really think is going to be a guy that can get on the field for us early and contribute.

I think to be able to contribute, [it may involve] a situational role for us, specific packages. I also do think he can make an impact on our special teams. So, I’m excited about the young man’s ability to come in and help this football team from the beginning.

Nate Kaczor really likes him. He thinks that this is a guy that can come in and contribute from the beginning on special teams. He’s also had some play time as a gunner, as a cover guy, so this guy is going to get on the field for us early. We’re excited for who he can be for us as a football player.

I hated it too, but the more I am reading about him, the more I am coming around to it.  I really like his desire to learn more as far as analytics go, and I was really impressed that he worked the scheme to his players, rather than the players to his scheme.  I've had enough of that over the years.

My hope is that what we saw from Turner last year at the end of the season isn’t exactly “his offense,” for a couple reasons.

First, I just don’t love that style of offense long term. I like being able to work in all those wrinkles — the screens and jet sweeps and all the short option routes to the RB — but to compete at the top of the NFL, you’ve got to be able to push the ball down the field efficiently in the passing game. That’s the beauty of someone like Andy Reid, who can attack you horizontally and in the short passing game as well as anybody, but who also knows that big plays in the intermediate and deep passing game are paramount. Maybe more accurately, that’s the beauty of giving Andy Reid a player like Mahomes, because at times Andy’s offenses can get stuck in neutral — but Mahomes is a human big downfield play waiting to happen, and that supercharges everything Andy does.

Second of all, I think the most promising thing about last season for Turner’s future outlook would be if that’s not really “his“ scheme, but he adapted and tailored the gameplan to the players he had available to him. When the best players you have are Christian McCaffrey, DJ Moore, and Curtis Samuel, I would think the optimal approach would look something like what Turner cooked up over those last few games. In other words, he had a few round pegs — and instead of trying to force those round pegs into square holes, he carved out some round holes that would fit them better. That would be extremely promising to me.

It would be especially promising because I don’t think our offensive talent, as currently constituted, really fits what he did with the Panthers last season. Our best player is Terry McLaurin, and he’s not really a gadget WR. He could do the gadget stuff, but you’re wasting his ability as a route runner and contested catch maker if you’re using him mostly in screens and short crossers and jet sweeps. We also have several more traditional RBs who are (or could be) really good players, and I don’t think they fit well in an offense where you’re looking for the RB to get 100+ targets. And you’ve also got our two young outside WRs in Harmon and Gandy-Golden who definitely won’t give you any impact in that sort of scheme, as slower big-body guys who take a while to get up to speed. Gibson and Sims are the only surefire roster members who would really flourish in that sort of scheme, with McKissic and Wright also good fits among roster bubble guys.

What I’m hoping to see is more of a hybrid between some of that scheme and the classic Air Coryell roots that are in his DNA from his dad. Our personnel really fits the latter scheme better, I think. We don’t have anything at TE, which hurts, but perhaps a quality slot WR in Sims could simulate that impact in the middle of the field to some degree.

Another great post.

The first bold is exactly what he did in changing the route assignments that were given to Samuel and Moore, to fit what Allen was able to accomplish in the offense.

The second bold is something I think happens with him and Zampese, another offensive genius with Coryell routes.

Like I've said recently, I was down on the Turner hiring, but I like what I see.  Now let's see if he can execute it now that it's all on him.

I like the fact that Rivera realizes that both McKissic & Gibson are receiving pieces that can be moved around. McKissic is like Chris Thompson, Gibson has the potential to be a poor man’s Christian McCaffery. We’ve had a player like one of those - when healthy - the last 5 years (CT) but we haven’t had a player who’s the size of Gibson with that same kind of versatility to go along with a CT type player.

These two have a real chance to make some plays when they get the ball in their hands. It’s hard to predict what will happen, I took a stab at it in my stats prediction thread, but both of these guys for example are capable of both having CT type stats but, in some way you have to divide those stats between the two players. It wasn’t easy to do bc the potential is there for them to both have 40 plus recs for 300 plus yards, not to mention some carries and yards on the ground as well.

Also think there is a good chance we end up with a wr not on the team at moment on opening day roster. The WR was so deep liable to see some surprising cuts this year

I’d say that happens only if Harmon, Steven Sims, Jr. and AGG or to a lesser extent Cam Sims, Quinn or one of the UDFA’s don’t step and look like a decent #2 option in camp, which is kind of hard to imagine that one of those guys won’t step up to be a WR who can get 50 plus recs, and 700 yds with 3-5 TDs.

Then, if Steven Sims is just the slot guy and not starting opposite Terry - which is most likely - he had 23 recs, 240 yds & 4 TDs the last 5 games of the year. So, when he plays an entire season he’ll likely have around 60 recs,  650-700 yds and 5-6TDs.

I just don’t know what vet is going to be better options then Harmon & Sims, Jr, and if they are better options, is it going to be a big upgrade where you’d want to not play our second year player and thus stunt their development?

I say we just roll w/ what we have.
