I get the frustration with Armstead continually getting injured, but at the end of the day if you want to be a successful team you have to get your best players on the field if they are ready to go. Armstead has shown when healthy he is a premier LT in the NFL. Ram has been solid for a few weeks in replacement duties (Not to say he doesn't have a bright future), but he certainly hasn't been anywhere near a healthy Armstead at LT. At this point I'd say Strief is also a better option than Ram unless we see a drop in Stief's play level this season then by all means have Ram replace him. We don't really have the luxury to sit our best players to see what our future guys are capable of. We have a "Win now" roster with Brees possibly not being a Saint much longer, and possibly even some major changes to the coaching staff if we don't have a playoff caliber year.

IMO its not an issue of sitting a better player for an idea of the future... IMO Ram is a better option than Strief is. Ram is a better run blocker no question, is much more athletic and versitle no question and IMO isnt a libility aganist speed rushers on 3rd down.

Prediction: Michael Thomas scores 3 touchdowns and catches 12 balls for 260 yards. Dolphins win anyway, 28 - 21. Afterwards, Sophie Turner makes me a sandwich and then takes our kids out of the house so I can enjoy the rest of my football Sunday.

I can't tell you where your Miss Turner went when she supposedly "took the kids out." But I can tell you she didn't have kids with her when I saw her. And I saw her, trust me.

Sorry for your loss(es).

I disagree that Ram is currently the better option. Sure he's the option for the future, and looks like he could be a good one in the future, but as of right now he is average at best. Sure he's a bit more athletic, but if Strief is playing at a level similar to last season, he is a top 5 RT in the NFL. Ram certainly isn't anywhere near that at this point in time. Ram has a PFF grade of 75.0 so far this season. Strief had an 86.8 in 2016. To given an idea of how that rates. The top rated RT last season was Jack Conklin with an 88.9. While PFF grades aren't the be all end all, it certainly gives some perspective of how OL have fared. In this case, I think you have to give Stief the start until his play level drops as he is one of the best pass blocking RT's in the NFL. You say he can get beat by speed rushers, but how often is the question? His numbers indicate hardly giving up any hurries or sacks compared to his top level peers at RT. Even if he's an average run blocker, his pass blocking ability's are far too valuable in this offense. Ingram seemed to run the ball just fine last season while Strief played, so I'm not concerned about his run blocking ability at this time.

With all that said. What a "problem" to have once Armstead and Strief get healthy. Have we ever had too many talented OL to have to argue which talented OL should start over the other?

First off... Im not a real big PFF fan and if there is one position PFF is REALLY questionable its with grading offensive lineman. Having said that, that grading system means little to me.

Ramczyk has been better than average when you consider the fact that he was limited in the offseason due to injury and how hes had to shuffle from left to right thus far. I also disagree with you on Striefs play of recent. I feel Strief is the player who is average right now. Hes best on 1st and 2nd down in passing situations but when hes asked to lead block on running downs or face speed rush specialist on 3rd and long situations he really struggles. Payton often chips on the right side to assist Strief in these situations so on the money downs for NFL offensive lineman Strief either struggles or is given help. There is a reason Payton has been trying to replace Strief for the last couple years.

I still think Strief is a viable player but not the player of his past and not the better option between he and Ramczyk.

Last year was his best year to date. I think it's a bit soon to be calling it "his past."

Some people view Strief as a good player while other a benefactor of Brees ability to manipulate the pocket and digest defenses and get rid of the ball quickly.

Once again Im not calling Strief a scrub but ive ALWAYS felt he was very overrated as a player. Solid player with diminiahing skill set. I just view Ramczyk as a better overall player when you compare the two as they are now.

A) We see players drop quickly on a regular basis. Remember how lousy Peyton Manning was in his last few years (compared to just a few years prior to his slide). We can't be certain yet if (or how much) Strief has diminished this season as our sample size is what, about 1.75 quarters of play?

B) What an awesome point, and YES!! I love this perspective!!

Players undoubtedly can drop off quickly, but I'd like to see him out there and if he struggles then you pull the plug. If he is anywhere near last year, he is a borderline pro-bowl caliber RT.

The idea that we should bench a guy because he might, start to decline is.... well, beyond me.

If Brees and Payton think Strief is the best RT for this team, I’ll take their lead for now.

And agreed on what an awesome problem to have. Someone in the Vaccaro thread suggested some sort of Duane Brown/Vaccaro swap. Lol that’s like the last position the Saints are looking for right now.
