Last Years FA Studs and Duds

Who do you have as your best FA signings last year (Outplayed or played up to there new contract) and who screwed it up?

Couple standouts off the top of my head:

Tyrann Mathieu
Mark Ingram
Preston Smith
Za'Darius Smith
Jamie Collins

Worst, again, off the top of my head:

Antonio Brown
Nick Foles
Jesse James
Landon Collins

And I think they could still turn out to be more worth it, but I feel like the value hasn't returned one year in on Le'Veon Bell or Trey Flowers. Not bad players, but a couple of the richest contracts thrown out last year, and the results weren't huge. I also feel like I saw more bad than great out of Earl Thomas, but that might have just been what I noticed. Could argue Ja'Wuan James, but more an injury thing, so if he comes back fine next year it's not a problem. Just no return on investment yet.

For the Raiders...

Trent Brown got a lot of money, highest paid OT type money, which is hard to live up to, but he played at a pro bowl level on the right side. He was downright dominant at times. But he was banged up for a small stretch of the season. Still having him is a big boost to an OL that was very good last year and should continue to be very good for the next couple.

Lamarcus Joyner on the other hand was terrible. He's among the top 5-10 paid safeties and I would assume among the highest paid nickel corners in the entire NFL and he was garbage. I'm truly not sure how much that falls on him and how much falls at playing him in the slot when most Rams fans said he was a good safety that could play the slot sometimes. The staff seems to want to keep him there this season and a lot of people think there's a decent chance he gets beat out by Amik Robertson at some point during the season. That could be because Robertson was a guy a lot of people liked as a nickel corner this year, but also because we just don't have any faith in Joyner. I'll be shocked if he isn't cut after this upcoming season when it's easy to do so.

The Packers signings of Za'darius Smith, Preston Smith and Adrian Amos all turned out to be great. Billy Turner was a pretty average player, but not a flop either.

For the Jets:

Dud: Bell. Jets fans have been debating all off season whether his poor production was due to him losing a step or the OL. The OL was clearly an issue. But even with that, he looks like he lost a step or two.

Stud: Jamison Crowder. He’s a very good slot WR and should continue to see a ton of targets in Gase’s system.

TBD: Mosley. Got off to an excellent start for like 2.5 quarters. Unfortunately he couldn’t even finish his first game. Injuries ruined his season. He’s supposedly close to being fully healthy.

Broncos:

Stud - Kareem Jackson. You could make a case he was our best player last year. Undersized but hits the crap out of people, his presence on the back end in tandem with Simmons gave us our best pair of safeties since Atwater and Smith decades ago. Love his game.

Duds -  Bryce Callahan & Ja'Wuan James. Not performance based. Ja'Wuan James played two halves of football all year and Callahan never played. And RT and CB were problem spots all year without them.

Za'Darius Smith might be the 3rd best FA signing in GB history. And when you consider that 1 and 2 are Reggie White and Charles Woodson....

If he keeps up the level of play from last year over the next couple he would be right there with Woodson IMO. He quickly turned himself into one of the top OLB in the league while also being a great leader for the Packers.

Ziggy Ansah was a huge flop. One of the worst DEs in football last year regardless of how you look at it.

Mike Iupati was just okay. Same with Josh Gordon.

For Buffalo:

John Brown, Cole Beasley, Spain, Nsekhe, Morse, and Roberts were all good signings. Brown became a 1000 yard receiver again. Beasley is a good slot receiver. Spain played really well at guard. When Nsekhe got injured the pass protection got noticeably worse. Morse continues to be a good center. Robert was a beastly kick/punt returner.

Kroft, Yeldon, & Smith didn't pan out. Kroft was injured all year, but showed some potential. Yeldon fumbled way too often, and barely saw the field because of it. Smith is just straight up trash.

Feliciano started off hot, but simmered down as the season went on. Still, I think he'll be a good guard going forward.

Saints didn’t do much with FA last year.

Jared Cook was awful the first third of the season, then boom...top 5 statistical TE the rest of the way.

Janoris Jenkins was solid. Acquired in season. Not a game changer but pretty good.

Kiko Alonso was actually pretty good. Very good run defender.

The Saints have done a good job mitigating risk with FA signings recently...probably one of the reasons why they have one of the better rosters in the league.

When GB signed Jared Cook, I told other fans "he's a player you love 4 weeks out of the year and hate the other 12"; he now seems to be getting closer to 50/50.

For Bucs:

Studs: Shaq Barrett. Does this need explanation?

Ndamukong Suh. Not dominant, but he was key to us being the best team against the run last year.

Duds: Blaine Gabbert. Through no fault of his own he got injured in the final preseason game and spent the year on IR. I still like him as a backup though.

Bradley Pinion: He finished the season with the 32nd best AYPP while our castoff Bryan Anger finished 4th best.

Deone Bucannon: He was slated to start before we drafted Devin White. When White was injured in the first quarter of the season, Kevin Minter filled in for him.            Bucannon barely saw the field and was cut halfway through the season.

Mixed Bag: Breshad Perriman. He was absolutely terrible for about the first 12 games. When Evans and Godwin went down he stepped up in a big way. He played well    enough to get a nice contract from the Jets. This is after it looked like he played himself out of the league.
