soulman
One major factor that made the '85 Bears Defense so effective and feared was it's pass rush and while some of this was due to Buddy Ryan's scheme of placing a stop watch on QBs by rushing more defenders than could be blocked the pass rushing records and stats of three DL, Richard Dent, Steve McMichael, and Dan Hampton show that much of that pressure came from those three alone. Richard Dent: 17 sacks/7 FF..........Bears Career: 124.5 sacks/34 FF Steve McMichael: 8 sacks..........Bears Career: 92.5 sacks Dan Hampton: 6.5 sacks..........Bears Career: 57 sacks During the 1985 season alone these three rung up 31.5 sacks and 7 FF and over the course of their Bears careers (12 years for Dent and Hampton, 13 for McMichael) they combined for 274 sacks and 34 Forced Fumbles. That's a whole lot of big plays across a span of years that went from 1979 to 1993. The issue being looked at in this video is how the addition of Robert Quinn helps restore the "Rule of Three" to the Bears pass defense by adding him to two already strong pass rushers in Khalil Mack and Akiem Hicks. Quinn will be looked upon to be that dangerous speed rusher Leonard Floyd never managed to become.
soulman
One issue that has been resolved since the production of the video is the acquisition of Tashaun Gipson to play SS a position he has played before both in JAX in 2017 and last season with Houston. At 6'1/212lbs he's much better equipped to play that role of a downhill hitter than either HHC-D or Eddie Jackson with Deon Bush providing depth. Gipson is also a good pass defender which should also help make passing into a middle manned by him and Eddie Jackson a more risky proposition.
