A carryover from last season's poor efforts. It felt all too similar. There is some hard truth to be told here in analysis: Mayfield is only operating within the first read side of a given scheme. If that option becomes covered or the picture is unclear for Mayfield, he is either hesitating, jumping around the pocket with happy feet, or bailing quickly without going through progressions to get to his backside answers. The visuals on that INT are perfect. He looks to the wrong side of the field (single WR side) when there's a clear route beating combination on the other side. Same on the 4th Down sack. He's not processing quick 1 step throws and that's on him. Throw in multiple looks at balls that should have been thrown out in front and were behind OBJ and Landry, and that's unacceptable from a guy who so many people, for whatever reason, futilely believe has elite accuracy and ball placement despite blatant evidence to the contrary (Even that 4th and 6 deep ball to OBJ where he was open by 8 yards), and that double clutching is absolutely infuriating. How much of this is due to not being able to process vs being new to a scheme, constantly? That’s what we need to figure out over the next 15 games.
MWil23
Just now, LETSGOBROWNIES said: How much of this is due to not being able to process vs being new to a scheme, constantly? That’s what we need to figure out over the next 15 games. While we do need to figure it out, these are basic level recognition that we expect from our HS QB in today's spread game. In an "UP" front, you have a 2 WR look and flood crossing concept to the right side, where you have a single safety look, as they've rotated their other safety into the box. The far corner (#24) is in some variation of either off man or Cover 3 (about the only 2 defenses that you can possibly play), meaning that the shoot/quick out is the primary read here (Jarvis). Given the fact that he looks the complete opposite way is baffling, considering even if all 7 guys in that UP front blitz, they have 7 hats to block/account for them, and you're playing 3 on 3 considering the safety doesn't factor into this route combination at all at 12 yards off the ball, considering presnap they already rolled the safety down. He's a post/high defender. You're right. He's got 15 more games to show that it's a new scheme and we owe it to him and the franchise as a whole to figure out what's wrong. Myles had a good game too, he was right there at Lamar multiple times creating pressure--the problem is Lamar is so athletic he can easilly sidestep pressure and take off. I will say not a single person in the secondary did anything at all

But yeah, that’s it.

I for one think if Vernon has another clunker of a game he should be starting
MWil23
I mean, before the season we said our LB corps was a joke no matter what and we were an injury or two away from that unit being a complete joke as well. As dumb as it was to play zone all day and not really adjust, with our awful secondary, I can understand WHY we felt the need to start off that way. It's going to be a VERY long year defensively regardless of whether or not the offense shows up this year.

However, we have a lot of guys on this team that makes “business decisions.”

candyman93
Random, but I wish we had gave Damon Sheehy more of a opportunity on special teams. Guys like him would have been good for the lockeroom.
