Its a novel virus and a novel situation, not exactly the best scenario to speak in absolutes.  There's a very real chance that the NFL season will be stopped, paused or re-scheduled at some point between August- January and the League set the season schedule to accommodate those potential scenarios.
The league spent a ton of time & money planning for these interruptions, its the prudent thing to do
They'll certainly give it their best shot and some games will be played - beyond that - nobody really knows how this will all unfold.
Hoping for the best, but that's all it is right now - hope. The NFL gets the benefit of watching how it works for NBA and they'll adjust accordingly

I'm not going to act like I have a crystal ball, but that's my prediction. Maybe I'm a little cynical but the amount of money involved isn't trivial. Hope? Revolutions are built on hope! Wait that's from something else. Anyway, don't get me wrong, I don't think the NFL is flying blind, but let's just say I'm very bullish on an on-time start. We'll see. If the NBA season bombs, then I'll worry.

I'd say the same about Philly, but I also argue that what they're doing isn't exactly "playing football" most of the time...

The texans should probably beat the eagles first before houston fans put the word  philly in their mouths.

Interesting news out of Florida. Keep in mind, the Disney complex in Orlando is where the NBA and MLS are considering holding their season. Players would have to fly to this airport. (They could theoretically fly into the airport nearby in Sanford or even the tiny airport in Gainesville,) but this kind of thing just shows a much larger logistical problem with having a season at all, much less fans in stands.

If there's still not been a vaccine by July of 2021 when the following football season is around, I'd be pretty confident we'll have reached some form of herd immunity by that point.

more obfuscation:

"128 of the positive tests are not employees but have traceable connections to our employees"

Why don't they just tell the truth and say they are contractors who work at the airport ? Many of the food stands, sales people, retail workers etc aren't employed by the airport, but they are IN the airport interacting with travelers all day/night.
So from an infection/transmission POV its meaningless word-smithing by self -interested parties. The virus doesn't give a rats arse who signs your paycheck and your illness isn't any different if you catch it from an airport employee or the credit card barkers working the concourses.

Liability reasons I am sure.

My first thought was WOW with that many having it the other half must be immune because you can't have that many infected and the other half having nada. It's just not statistically possible as most would have it unless they are immune...However digging deeper seeing 2 out of 500?!? WTF?!? Very different story and then the total number since it began half of them are employees and the other half people they probably came in contact with. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. Don't shame me for living my life and you can choose not to.

I'm on board with NFL not having fans but maybe allow family just like they were in little league.

Anyone acting like there won’t be football this year is in denial. This isn’t to say that the NFL is going to throw caution to the wind, but whether it's full stadiums, half stadiums, or empty stadiums, make no mistake; the season will be played on schedule.

Season will be "started" on schedule.  Doesn't mean it will be completed. If in the Fall another massive outbreak occurs, primarily those who weren't sick the 1st time around when the nation was shut down, the season will be canceled. Pretend otherwise all you want.

Its tough to sort through these press releases because they toggle between positive tests and "cases" as if they are the same.
"Cases" usually means you were sick enough to seek treatment vs a positive test, which may or may not indicate symptoms
The media is invested in having a crisis and boosting ratings, while others are heavily invested in opening the economy and downplaying the severity.

As pawns in the game, we're left to parse through it all and try to make informed decisions as we consider going to games and watching live sports with large numbers of our fellow citizens.

Yes and no. Its a novel virus and we learn more each day. Much of what we thought about the virus in January turned out to be false in March. What we thought we knew in March has been updated and changed in May. It was thought that pediatric patients were safe, then we later learned that's not the case.
Too soon to be making any declarations about who is/isn't at risk imo

We also don't have good data on what happens on the line of scrimmage over a 3 hour period. You have two immense humans 3 inches apart, breathing heavily while under intense exertion. There really isn't a good model for that in the real world. Players talk about how exhausted they are at the end of a series and at the end of a game. How does that impact transmission and infection ? How does their exertion level impact getting and progressing in the disease ? What if the players are taking other meds for various maladies and or steroids/hGH etc ?  None of that has been studied so far. If you read the stories from COVID19 patients, they all talk about the oxygen deprivation and how they have zero energy... now imagine that in a football player.

So much we just don't know yet.
But what we do know is that viruses from the same family cause lung scarring, cardiac issues and other long- term concerns. Its well within the realm of possibility that the players get COVID19, recover after several weeks and have impaired lung function for the rest of their lives - thus limiting their ability to play professional sports. That possibility has to weigh on the minds of some players -  and although that risk is small, its not zero.

The NFL Lords surely want their money, but it ain't their livelihood at risk out there on the field.

The players will eventually need their money. Unlike many of the front office guys, the average player would struggle gaining decent employment outside of football. I understand the risk of the unknown. But I also know the risk of the known...people can’t make money without work.
