If Bears hit on all glass full points they still match up very poorly offensively with a healthy 49ers D front.  They are just outmanned.

But its a long year, and injuries happen.   Bears have some scholarship players on defensive side of ball too like Lovie would say.

I think they beat Packers last two years if they just stopped getting tricked upfront by Pettine and looking like a little league team on blocking assignments.   I mean, they would have been better off not using a pro blocking scheme and simply going foot to foot and all blocking down on every play.   It has been simply embarrassing against GB.

Maybe that is where a new O line coach can earn his salt.

I think that's the most embarrassing part of 2019 is that the Bears could've won both Packer games if they'd just run the ball down their throat. The Pack couldn't stop anybody but the Bears at running the ball.

If Nagy could run the ball down their throat he would have.  Packers were living in his backfield.

The 2nd Packers game was pathetic. They played dime the entire game and the Bears could still not get the ground game going.

The problem wasn't that he couldn't run or wasn't having success, Nagy just simply abandoned it altogether which was a stupid thing to do. This was especially true in the first meeting against GB.

Pettine ran nickel and dime all game and having that many smaller bodies on the field gives the offense a big advantage in the run game (esp vs 1 and 2 TE sets) but also puts them at a disadvantage in the pass game. Especially with a QB who can't read defenses. There's no excuse for not utilizing that advantage and having Mitch throw the ball 50 times against a defense that can't stop the run.

This all rang true in the first quarter when we did have success running the ball but struggled in the pass game. Coincidentally, the only 2 drives Nagy decided to run the ball more than passing was on the only scoring drive of the game (4 runs + 1 pass) and the other was a 3 and out (2 runs for 9 yards and a sack on 3rd and 1).

1st drive

  • 1st and 10 vs 5 DBs. Cohen had a huge hole but fumbles the ball on the hand off. Negated by DEF penalty.
  • 1st and 10 vs 5 DBs. 5 yard run.
  • 2nd and 5 vs 6 DBs. Pass play
  • 3rd and 5 vs 6 DBs. (Terrible) designed pass play, Mitch improvises and runs for 7 yards.
  • 1st and 10 vs 6 DBs. Pass play
  • 2nd and 10 vs 5 DBs. Designed QB run, 1 yard.
  • 3rd and 9 vs 6 DBs. Pass play.

===============
2nd drive:

  • 1st and 10 vs 5 DBs. 4 yard run.
  • 2nd and 6 vs 5 DBs. 6 yard run.
  • 1st and 10 vs 6 DBs. 1 yard run.
  • 2nd and 9 vs 5 DBs. 4 yard run. Would've been a bigger gain if Braunecker doesn't get in Davis' way and lead blocks thru the WRONG hole.
  • 3rd and 5 vs 5 Dbs. Pass play. Mitch throws a 1 yard screen too late which pins Cohen against the sidelines not giving him any room to work in the open field.

^^ It's worth noting that Nagy only ran the ball 4 more times in the first half and only 3 times in entire 2nd half.

One of the 1st half runs was a stupid dive play up the middle against 8 guys in the box playing zone on a 3rd and 1 from GB's 39 (10 yards away from FG range) with .....wait for it....Cordelle Patterson and Mitch lining up behind center (a dead giveaway). Hell, he didn't even have Montgomery on the field. He had Cohen playing motion decoy instead.

The 2nd half drives all went like this;  run, run, pass. Then run, pass, pass. Then pass x6.  Then pass 9x. Then pass 13x.

The OL was poor in pass protection but they were solid in the run game when given a chance. Braunecker looking lost in his blocking assignments certainly didn't help but that was one of the losses that were almost squarely on Nagy.
