Little bout of insomnia last night, so you guys get the current top 10 in this draft class to noodle over until i get back to this either Sunday night or Monday.

In-season scouting update (All-Star Break)
Position Name Projection Age Height WGT OVR POT IN OUT PER D PST D HNDL REB IQ ATH
PG Marty McGuire Top 5 21 6'2" 202 A- A+ C+ B+ B- F A- F B- A-
PF Elden Samuel Top 5 22 6'9" 254 B A+ B- D+ D C D- B C B-
SF Len Davenport Top 5 22 6'9" 247 B A+ C D+ B+ B- D+ D C A-

SG Lamond Forte Lottery 22 6'6" 199 C B- D+ D+ C+ F+ C F C B

Top to bottom, way more talent in this draft class.  Marty McGuire stands out as the most talented and best potential, long term.  Dwayne Coleman may end up being the best get though.  19 years old, and can already come into the league defending and rebounding.

Scouting reports aren't final though.  I'll scout most of these guys at least once, maybe two more times before the season is over.

Also, a few other in-season all-star break notes.

2014 All Star Break Record

  • Magic currently have a 18-32 record, good for last place
  • Nuggets - 30-25 (22nd pick)
  • Suns - 22-32 (6th best chance in lottery)

I own all three picks from trades over the last two seasons.

One more thing - i found out that if you go to Edit Player, you can see the players actual potential number.  What's interesting is that Dale Burke and Body Landry are both showing as B- potential, yet Dale's potential is 89 and Coby's is 68.

I suspect that the potential doesn't refer to overall potential, but rather to potential referenced to the players overall rating.  So dale can improve by roughly 16 points (73 to 89), and Coby can improve by 17 (51 to 68).

So the B- isn't a death knell for Burke.

Oh, and i also earned 80 reward points, enough to use do the Untapped Potential training camp and raise one player's potential by 10 points.  After the draft i'll decide who to use it on.

I have a few more updates to post (stats, season records, etc). But until I get to that, here are some draft related items if anyone wants to speculate on who I should pick.

  • I ended up with the worst record, and the Suns had the 2nd worst.
  • I ended up with the 1st and 3rd picks in the lottery!
  • I also have the Nuggets pick, at #20.

Here's the final draft board. The only position I have set long term is SF. So I'm open to any position really.

Thoughts on who I should take?

I would take PG McGuire #1.  He can play D and shoot, both you need at the Guard position.

Then I would take PF Elliot at 3.  Yes Samuel has a higher potential rating, but Eliot has a higher OVR now which mitigates some of that, plus he’s a better interior defender, rebounder, and athlete.

Id try to get someone who can shoot at 20, otherwise just take a Center.

Yeah I was thinking McGuire for sure at #1. He may play SG for me this season in Jameer Nelson's last year. Then switch to point.

I had been waffling between Elliot and Samuel at #3.

I probably won't have the option of a Center at #20. The options are pretty bad after Chucky Green. I'm hoping one of those Lottery SGs falls. I'm guessing they'll probably be serviceable in a few seasons time. For now they can provide a few minutes off the bench.

A few updates to catch up on that i blew past in an effort to get the draft board up.

  • During the season I signed Hedo Turkoglu to a 1 year extension worth 1.39M.  Good depth piece for next year.
  • 27-55 Record, worst in the league
  • Suns had 29-53 record, 2nd worst in the league
  • Nuggets were 44-38 and had the 20th pick in the draft

Once i hit the offseason, here was the player progression.  Burke took a nice step forward, everyone else was predictable.  I can probably get another two years out of Gibson, one more out of Glen Davis.  Everyone else needs replaced ASAP.

2014 Off-season Player Progression
Position Name New OVR Improvement Prv OVR
SF Dale Burke 79 6 73
PF Taj Gibson 77 0 77
PF Glen Davis 72 0 72

PG Jameer Nelson 69 -4 73
SF Hedo Turkoglu 67 -3 70

C Nikola Vucevic 64 1 63
PG Chris Duhon 63 -3 66
PF Robin Cartwright 57 3 54
C Coby Landry 53 3 50

Presumed roster for next year, with the Hedo signing, and in-season trades.  Blanks are draft picks, obv.

Will post final player stats in the next post.

I don't think Taj Gibson is a Center in 2013's NBA.  You're obviously going PF at 3, I would try to flip Gibson for a future pick, then sign a starting Center in FA.  I think you could use a veteran 6th man (scorer) in FA too, but that kind of depends how pick 20 goes.

This isn't your franchise MKnight, go do yours! We haven't had updates in ages!

Hahaha, funny stuff.

He's sort of right though.  Taj will be out of position, and i had been thinking about that.  I was originally going to throw caution to the wind and just let it happen because this team won't contend for a playoff spot until 2016.

I will look at a trade - this is probably the last year i could realistically trade Taj.  At the very least i can maybe flip him for a future 1st and target a big man in a future class.  Big Baby could play Center (he's PF/C) for this season.

Oh he's definitely right. I just want to see what you choose to do. Mknight trying to back seat drive your franchise (kidding MK)
