The difference between an illegal hit and a legal one is way too complex for it to be simply "Follow the rules" a defender can tackle a player in a 100% elgal but the WR/RB/TE can lower his head and ram into the defender and 15 yard penalty. I'm not defending Trevathan but it's much harder to be a defender in this modern era of football than people realize. Still he deserved a 2 game suspension at the very least, but considering it's his first offense I think a 1 game suspension would've sufficed. Player Safety is never going to be an issue you can 100% solve sadly. As a defender, follow the elementary school level fundamental of "see your target" and they will avoid 99% of all illegal hits. You may not understand the elements of Tax Fraud, but if you do it, knowingly or not, your still going to jail. It is an NFL players duty to understand and apply the rules. Its not nearly complicated as you make it out to be. Just keep your eyes up. Sure, accidental head to head hits will happen, but those players won't get suspended. No one is expecting to 100% fix player safety problems absent of revolutionary technology, but their has to be a deterrence to protect their colleagues, and their is no more effective deterrent than losing $$

No an NFL players duty is to show up to a game, play well, stay in shape, stay healthy and collect their paycheck and play within the NFL's rules. Then again it depends on the player so. 35 minutes ago, incognito_man said: As a defender, follow the elementary school level fundamental of "see your target" and they will avoid 99% of all illegal hits. A more complex rule doesn't mean more leniency in society, hence the relevance of my example Why should NFL players be held to a different standard? And to the bolded, that's what I said. Yeah it sucks now that guys who dish out dirty helmet-to-helmet cheap shots are going to be suspended. Shame on the NFL.

Did you watch the game? Adams wasn’t down, nor was the whistle blown, nor did he leave his feet. Trevathan was the second player to make contact, so Adams wasn’t “covered by 2 defenders”. Adams’ forward progress was stopped, but I’m not going to expect a defender to see a guy stop for a second and say “guess the play’s over”. You play through the whistle. How many times have we seen players absorb contact them breahthrough? The issue was his decision to hit him with the top of his helmet and his target, not the decision to hit Adams at all. Don’t lie to make a point.
