My boss is suggesting Islay type stuff. Never had anything like that.

yeah, except for i doubt ull find a good scotch under 30 bucks

oban 14 is really good NOT the distillers edition (distillers edition kills the smoke)

i guess you could try monkey shoulder?

All suggestions I'm taking note of. The price point is really flexible but that's my ballpark b/c I don't want to buy anything I won't be able to drink.

Thanks!!

np

stay away from glenmorangie (v fruity -- my fav kind of scotch)
stay away from macallan (v straight down the middle, not nearly smoky enough for you -- also a v good scotch)
hibiki is kinda peat-y.  also comes in a dope bottle.
you're prob the kind of person that loves lagavullin

theres also this
http://whiskeyreviewer.com/2016/02/redemption-barrel-proof-7-year-old-rye-whiskey-review-020316/

which tastes like scotch that you would prob like.

On Friday night I had some people over and we set up a two round, double-blind bourbon tasting.

The consensus turned out to be Redemption High Rye Bourbon >= 1792 Single Barrel > Maker's Mark > JR Carver

We also did Suntory vs Jameson vs Seagram's, but that result was pretty obvious.

Smoky flavored whiskeys/bourbons/scotches that I can purchase under $30 and aren't terrible.

Do they exist??

So it's an acquired taste, but if you want smokey (and I mean this is smokey) try Ardbeg.  Not sure if it's under $30 but it's close to that for the 10 year, maybe $40...
