Predict the 53

Without preseason it’s going to be difficult to project our 53 man roster and 16 man practice squad, but let’s do it for fun anyway

Quarterback [3]

The team could choose to try and sneak Rypien onto the practice squad, but I don’t see it as he’s Lock’s future backup and Pat Shurmur likes to keep 3 QBs.

Depth chart: Drew Lock, Jeff Driskell, Brett Rypien

Practice squad: None

Cut: None

Running Back [3]

Royce Freeman seems to have held off the challenge of Le’Vante Bellamy and RB/FB hybrid Jeremy Cox. The Broncos won’t keep a true FB, instead using Andrew Beck as a hybrid FB/TE/H-Back

Depth chart: Melvin Gordon, Phillip Lindsay, Royce Freeman

Practice squad: Le’Vante Bellamy, Jeremy Cox

Cut: None

Wide Receiver [6]

Six feels like the magic number here. Courtland Sutton, Jerry Jeudy and Tim Patrick are locks. Hamler will also make it provided his injury doesn’t land him on the PUP, but I think Elway might put him on PUP like they did with Lock last year to allow us six weeks to evaluate some of the other wideouts. Diontae Spencer’s special teams prowess gets him the nod, which leaves room for two of Dae’Sean Hamilton, Juwan Winfree, Tyrie Cleveland, Fred Brown and Cody White. Cleveland’s strong camp and special teams prowess gets him in and Hamilton gets one more chance, but both guys are on notice that a spot will need to be cleared for Hamler by week 7.

Depth chart: Courtland Sutton, Jerry Jeudy, Tim Patrick, Dae’Sean Hamilton, Diontae Spencer, Tyrie Cleveland

PUP list: KJ Hamler

Practice squad: Juwan Winfree, Cody White

Cut: Fred Brown, Kendall Hilton, Trinity Benson

Tight End [4]

Four is the magic number due to Beck being the H-Back. Fant, Vannett and Okwuegbunam should be the other 3. Jake Butt wins a role on the practice squad and could be called into action if someone goes down. It’s game over for Fumagalli.

Roster: Noah Fant, Nick Vannett, Andrew Beck (FB/TE), Albert Okwuegbunam

Practice squad: Jake Butt

Cut: Troy Fumagalli, Austin Fort

Offensive line [9]

Cushenberry and Wilkinson look to have won the starting jobs at C and RT. We have some decent backups on the OL. Netane Muti could be an IR stash

Depth chart: Garrett Bolles (LT), Dalton Risner (LG), Lloyd Cushenberry III (C), Graham Glasgow (RG), Elijah Wilkinson (RT), Demar Dotson (Swing OT), Jake Rodgers (2nd swing OT), Austin Schlottmann (swing OG/C), Patrick Morris (2nd swing OG/C)

IR: Netane Muti

Opt out: Ja’Wuan James

Practice squad: Calvin Anderson, Hunter Watts, Tyler Jones, Quinn Bailey

Cut: None

Defensive Line [6]

I think the magic number is 6 here and a strong camp from Christian Covington could spell the end of the line for a former second rounder

Depth chart: Jurell Casey (DE), Mike Purcell (NT), Shelby Harris (DE), Dre’Mont Jones (backup DE), McTelvin Agim (backup NT), Christian Covington (backup DE)

Practice squad: Deshawn Williams

Opt out: Kyle Peko, Joel Heath

Cut: Demarcus Walker

Linebacker [9]

The top 4 pass rushers and 2 ILB’s pick themselves. There’s room for at least 2 more ILB’s and Josey Jewell should nab the first spot as cover for Todd Davis. Justin Hollins leads the battle for the other but this could all change if Mark Barron is brought in to play the old Will Parks role. The final OLB spot likely comes down to either Malik Carnegie or rookie Derrek Tuszka

Depth chart: Von Miller (OLB), Alexander Johnson (ILB), Todd Davis (ILB), Bradley Chubb (OLB), Malik Reed (backup OLB), Justin Hollins (backup ILB), Josey Jewell (backup ILB) Jeremiah Attaochu (backup OLB), Malik Carney (3rd string OLB)

IR: Justin Strnad

Practice squad: Derrek Tuszka, Joseph Jones, Josh Watson

Cut: None

Defensive Backs [10]

I think we’ll keep 6 corners and 4 safeties. By the sounds of it 3rd rounder Michael Ojemudia is buried on the depth chart and will red shirt, whilst Duke Dawson is likely a cut

Depth chart: AJ Bouye (CB), Bryce Callahan (CB), De’Vante Bausby (NCB), Justin Simmons (FS), Kareem Jackson (SS), Isaac Yiadom (Backup CB), Devontae Harris (backup CB), Alijah Holder (Backup FS), Trey Marshall (backup SS), Michael Ojemudia (3rd string CB)

Practice squad: Essang Bassey (CB), Douglas Coleman III (FS), PJ Locke (SS)

Specialists [3]

Yesterday’s cutting of Wes Farnsworth means there’s nothing to see here.

Depth chart: Brandon McManus (K), Sam Martin (P), Jacob Bobenmoyer (LS)

Cut: Wes Farnsworth

The two position groups that interest me most right now are our TE's, arguably the deepest and most talented group we have, and the OT's, without a doubt the least talented group on the field with only one legit NFL starter.  I think our TE cuts will be picked up by somebody. As far as OT's, our cuts won't get any interest and other teams cuts will get a lot of interest. Jake Rodgers can finally pursue a realistic career while we fill a roster spot off the waiver wire.

Interested to see what Saturday brings.

The 5 that are up in the air today are Rypien, Morris, Butt, Jones and Holder, IMO.  Assuming nobody gets stashed on IR (don’t see it with Hamler, but possible) 2 of them make the 53, 3 get cut with hopes to move to PS.  I Suspect the Broncos will bet that Rypien, Morris, and Jones are the most likely to slip through waivers and thus we’ll see them cut, Butt and Holder retained.

Some serious noise that Elway has 1 more big move (trade) up his sleeve.  Wouldn't surprise me if one of the TE’s or WR’s is traded for a OT or Safety.  I still think this team has 2 primary holes: RT and “cover-backer”.

will be an interesting day.
