Same... always hated the term when its used for the NBA Finals and MLB World Series too. Perhaps too much soccer as a kid made me think of "world champions" as more than winning the best domestic league. I mean, are Liverpool the world champions now?

It's like if Liverpool called themselve world champions for winning the English premier league. All teams are in the same country, so they're the champions of England. Even the Champions League just makes them the champions of Europe.

LFC can actually call themselves that for winning the club world cup though. Which is between the champions of all continental confederations, as well as the host nation's league champions. As much as it pains to say....🤢

I don't have a problem with it right now.  In 2020, the NFL is still at the point where the NBA was at in the 1980s.  Nobody else in the world plays the sport at a high level, so the champions of our league are undoubtedly the best team on the planet.  That could change, but until it does, the NFL will reign supreme when it comes to the sport of football.  At the start of the 90s, we heard rumblings that it wasn't fair to proclaim that the NBA champions were the "World Champions."  The Olympics were a perfect barometer.  Up through the 80s, the US would throw together a team of college kids to go compete, and they almost always won.  In 1992, we got tired of hearing the grumbling and said, OK, if you want to question us, we will bring OUR best players to compete in the Olympics against your best.  The 1992 Dream Team was assembled and the beatings commenced.  As was the case with basketball in 1992, the NFL is without a doubt, the best collection of football players on earth.  Hence, there is nothing wrong with calling their champions the "World Champions."

Of course it is, but if it WERE a global sport, it would be different. You'd have rich owners of teams throughout the world that could attract the American talent, so the NFL would be diluted and talent would be global, just like soccer. You'd also then have the Superbowl champions face the champions of the Europe league, the Asian league etc.

Obviously that's never going to happen but THAT'S when the champs can call themselves World Champions. When every single team you play against is in the same country, calling them the 'world champions' is cringe.
