Oklahoma City EF5s

Motivation - Division Game. This is the start to our Iron Season. We needed to save money this season so we can pay Mahomes and Mixon next year. YOLO.

Offensive Strategy

Formations: 4 Wide Run and Shoot

Scheme: Pass (65%) vs Run (35%)

Rushing

Position Depth: Joe Mixon / Golden Tate / Brandin Cooks

Joe Mixon is our bell cow back. He’s used to toting the rock a lot and will do so again this season. We will attack Justin Houston’s side as the venerable defender is their weak link on the DL versus the run. With all the motion our receivers will be doing in the run and shoot there will also be opportunities to get some touch passses and jet sweeps to Tate, Cooks and Foster.

With our depth at OL we will also run some Jumbo packages in short and goal line situations.

Passing

We have given Mahomes the weapons he needs to give the rest of the league a fair shot at winning the Bizzbowl this season. The motion of our receivers will allow Mahomes to hit the open man. The run and shoot is a perfect offense for Mahomes who has quick processing ability and enough tools in his bag to adjust to what the defense gives him. His escapability allows us to forgo using a TE this season. We will attack Bouye the most this game as he is an overrated CB.

X.........LT.LG.C.RG.RT...........Z

......W................................Y

......................QB...SB

This is the base formation with the W or Y receiver in motion.

X........LT.LG.C.RG.RT..................Z

.........................................W.....Y

.....................QB..SB

We will also bunch to one side to isolate Robinson on the other side.

Defensive Strategy

Formation: 4-2-5 / 3-2-6

Scheme: Cover 2 Man

Run Defense

Our front four is stout against the run. Gordon isn’t the designated starting RB on his own team and posted a sub 4.0 yd avg last season. Richardson and Tuitt will contain Josh Allen if he decides to run. Hicks and Heyward collapse the pockett up the middle.

Pass Defense

The Jazz may have the best WR in the league but they are missing a few starters this week in Samuel and Jeffery so depth is an issue for them. Tre White is one of the best cover men in the league and will take on Thomas with help over the top from Malik Hooker. Byron Jones will cover the Jazz’s next best threat in Ertz and with his size should match up well. Troy Pride has the speed as a former sprinter to keep up with Moore. Adrian Amos is going to play a hybrid LB/S role for us this season and has the size to cover Higbee over the middle. We will keep things easy for Jennings and assign him RB coverage duties. Jordan Poyer will be both a robber and a spy on Josh Allen taking off on bootlegs and RPO plays.

Coverage Assignments:

·         Thomas / White - CB

·         Moore / Pride Jr. - CB

·         Ertz / Jones - CB

·         Higbee / Amos  - LB/S

·         Gordon/RB / Jennings-LB

New Orleans Jazz

Thank god for football and the BDL being back. While unfortunately there won’t be crowds available in New Orleans due to the pandemic, the Jazz will be ready as ever to take on their arch rivals in OKC and continue to dominate as they have the past 4 years.

Offense:

1RB-2WR-2TE Base – 65% run, 35% pass

We’re going to open the season with what we expect to be our base formation for the most of the year, although at points during the match we’ll rotate into both 1RB-3TE-1WR and 2RB-2TE-1WR sets.

While OKC don’t have any edge rushers, their interior linemen are still capable of generating a strong pass-rush and their secondary group is among the best in the league. So to avoid playing to their strengths, and avoid giving away the ball considering who their QB is, we’re going to play it safe and run the ball for the majority of our plays. While Johnson is named as the starter, he, Gordon and Singletary should all play a similar number of snaps and all get involved in the passing and screen game.

Obviously we like Michael Thomas against any CB in the league, but as Tre White will be shadowing him with likely some degree of safety help, we’re happy to keep him as a decoy for most of the match. He’ll get a few looks this game, but his time will come in the future weeks.

Run-pass Option:

We plan to run a large amount of option plays with Allen taking as many as 15 to 20 carries. While ordinarily we wouldn’t do so, if we can get Allen running at the edges and away from the OKC defensive linemen, we’re happy for him to get hit in space given he’ll be substantially larger than the OKC defensive backs who’ll be tackling him.

We also expect to have significant success passing to our TEs, despite the fact that they’ll be covered by some great safeties. This is because we know the safeties will have to cheat up against the run, especially Amos. So we’ll have Amos as the targeted defender and Allen will make his decision based on the read he gets on Amos. If Amos drops, Allen will keep it or pitch, whereas if Amos shows blitz or contain, the play will be a quick pass to either Ertz, Higbee or Moore in the slot.

High Tempo:

This is a pretty unique match as we assume we will see OKC run the same 11 personnel for the vast majority of the match, with their only position of any depth being CB. While the 4 interior linemen they do have are quality, they won’t be able to play 100% of the snaps without tiring. To make that even more of an issue, early on we’ll play a high tempo game with plenty of runs to the edges to get their defensive lineman moving from sideline to sideline.

Pull & Screens:

As OKC has no linebackers and will be playing with 3 CBs for a large amount of the match, our plan is to take advantage of this trying to get our runners in space on the edges. We’ll do this with both screens in the passing game or having our guards pull to either side in the run game, which should give our RBs and WRs the ball in space against CBs. Although we’re without Deebo, guys like Moore, Johnson and Singletary specialise in making guys miss and should be able to have a field day with CBs tackling them once they get into space.

Defense:

With no tight ends and only one running back available, we expect OKC to be quite one dimensional with a 1 RB and 4 WR look, unless some OL are used at TE in heavy sets. Thus we’re going to line up with a base 4-1-6, with 4CBs. Should OKC go heavy, we’ll happily rotate our big defensive guys and linebackers in too.

In terms of coverage, we’re going to line-up with:

Gilmore – Robinson
Bouye – Woods
Bradberry – Gallup
Jackson – Cooks/Tate
Hyde – Mixon

If OKC goes 5 wide, we’ll throw Kareem Jackson in to cover the 5th WR in the slot.

Byard will be the deep safety, while Hyde will play closer to the LOS.

We anticipate that OKC will try and be creative and encourage Mahomes to scramble and even use him on designed runs, so we’ll have Shaq Thompson work as a spy given he has the athleticism to match Mahomes.

While we do have some concerns that being spread out could leave us susceptible to the running game and screens, we fortunately have some great tackling CBs and we have complete confidence in them to make the tackles in open space we may need. Given the lack of depth that OKC has, we expect their offensive players to tire out and eventually fold as we can rotate our team and keep them fresh.

We’ll also encourage a safety first defensive plan for our players – no gambling on passes and instead ensuring that OKC can’t get a big play. We’ll control the ball and TOP over the long-term and our only chance of losing this is if OKC can get big strike play after big strike play, but with Byard at the back we feel comfortable that this won’t happen.

Orleans was very prepared for this game and with the state of that roster it wasn’t difficult to know where SirA1 had to try and go with this gameplan. Props to SirA1 for taking on the plan. I think the lack of outside pass rush and just overall athleticism at the ends (solid players for not for 4-3 ends) to face the RPO’s and the pulls getting runners on the edges outpaces anything Mahomes and this crew can keep up with. I also have to come into the game knowing Michael Thomas was healthy so to ding his production wouldn’t be fair based on that. New Orleans wins.

Still not convinced Allen is any good, but the supporting cast and line is enough to make him viable in BDL.  The difference makers here for me is NOs secondary and decision to play base dime.  I think Mahomes has some success, but his receiving weapons aren't formidable enough to prevent a fair amount of 3 and outs which leads to OKCs thin defense from tiring in the second half.  Jazz
