If they're looking for a total rebuild two trades that come to mind.

Trade 1

Minnesota receives: James Harden

Houston receives: D'Angelo Russell, Jarrett Culver, #1 pick, #17 pick, future 1st round pick

Trade 2

New York receives: Russell Westbrook

Houston receives: Mitchell Robinson, #8 pick

I’m not sure even the Knicks are stupid enough to sniff that deal. Westbrook is a declining, losing basketball player and they’re giving up two above average assets for him?

Do they even benefit from unloading, and starting over with a rebuild, right now?  What is the situation like with the rights to their future 1sts?

The Thunder have the option to swap their own pick or Miami's pick in 2021 with the Rockets pick (top 4 protected). If they choose not too then they have the option to swap picks with them in 2024, IIRC.

It's a splash move by the Knicks without giving up a ton of assets. Westbrook averaged 27 ppg on 47% FG during the regular season and would have free reign with them. Plus his contract is a huge asset during the 2021-22 season for a team looking to free up cap space.

An aging Westbrick with Knicks’ spacing? God no...

Westbrick/Barrett backcourt is a nuclear disaster. I get that the Knicks are better off forfeiting the #8 pick, but you’re gonna take Mitch from us too?? Knicks wouldn’t recoup 10% of that return for Westbrook’s expiring contract. This is the team that traded Kristaps Porzingis for two late first round picks. 😆

No. He basically guarantees you are a top 8 team in the NBA every season. Being a quasi-contender every year is not something you should take for granted. Look at the late 00's Mavs, it looked like they were frauds in the postseason until they weren't. Plus the odds of starting over and getting to be this consistently good again isn't likely.

That's true. But their owner is apparently strapped for cash and has made it clear that he won't go into the luxury tax to improve the team. They have Harden under contract for at least two more years but he's already 31 and their championship window is closing fast. Over the next three seasons between Harden, Westbrook, and Gordon they have to pay them $99M in '20-21, $105M in '21-22, and potentially $113M in '22-23 if Harden/Westbrook both opt in to their contracts.

Obviously they'd need a kings ransom to let go of Harden but their flexibility to improve the team as they're currently structured seems almost impossible.

They don't have assets anyway. The best bet would be to find a way to dump Westbrook on some idiot team.

sure. Go total rebuild. Trade Harden to the Hawks for Huerter, #4 and the next 3 lotto protected 1st round picks in alternating years. Hawks have a ton of cap and y'all can get a massive trade exception this way.

Good idea. Seems like fair value.

Maybe they could actually instead convince the Lakers to trade Anthony Davis for Russell Westbrook.
