some 1st quarter notes

- 1st play we attempt a zone run right out of 12 personnel (2 WR, 2 TE) with Lindsay, and the Chiefs copy the Raiders approach on Defense. They go 8 man box (not unusual vs 2 TE) but they have their 4-3 SLB play edge contain for any PA bootleg and have their 4-3 DE (Clark) crash inside to play the run. Fant doesn't have a chance on the reach block and Clark stops the run at the LOS from the backside.
- RPO on 2nd down. Not really any read by Drew - he just gave it straight off to Lindsay. Fant was wide open in the flat, so wonder if we'll come back to that
- 3rd and 7 is the long throw by Drew down the sideline to Fant. Great throw. We have trips to the field, Fant iso to the boundary. It looks like Cover 1 which is unusual on 3rd and 7.
The Chiefs send 5 but the pass pro is great (Dotson in particular stones Clark 1v1). Not sure Fant against a pretty long CB at this part of the field would have been where I would have gone (the bunched trips vs man coverage would've looked good) but the CB gets too cocky and thinks he has the speed to look back and stay with Fant; he doesn't

- This isn't a particular smart play by Tim Patrick. He has a 4-3 WLB over him because the CB doesn't travel from RCB. Now, on the board this would look like a CB for Patrick to block, meaning a blitz is unlikely and thus he can be patient with his block. But it's an OLB, so he has to anticipate him coming downhill. He doesn't and the OLB just rushes into the backfield (and makes a great tackle by the way). Shame, because there was a hole right up the gut for Gordon too

 - Next is the Drew INT. This is so frustrating, because he does everything so well until he chooses to go deep. It's delayed 5 man blitz and the delay means a free rusher (#50). Drew stays in, keeps his eyes down field then escapes left where his entire route tree is which is great. He has Vannett wide open for an easy 6/7 yards but he plays hero ball again and Mathieu makes a play on the ball which should have been to the sideline.
Just take the easy 6, man.

- Nice fill and tackle by Josey Jewell on the inside shotgun run on 1st down. 1 yard gain
- Easy 15 yards on a WR flare on 2nd down when Bouye doesn't swap off his man
- 3rd tackle on this drive already for Jewell. Stops the run for 2. His 3 tackles have been for a total 6 rushing yards
- 3rd and 4, we dodge a bullet. I have no idea what the coverage is supposed to be here. My best guess is Cover 2, given how wide Simmons gets and the fact Bouye sits down near the sticks, but there is no deep cover to our right hand side of the Defense. Hill's most damaging route is the deep crosser from the slot and this is it. Either Ojemudia or Jackson is supposed to be covering that space, and Mahomes can't hit a wide open Hill.
Credit Bradley Chubb and Malik Reed who both hit Mahomes and force him to hurry the throw. Both won with the same single arm jab move that is Chubb's signature move. Clear hands to the face by the Chiefs RT, not called. Shelby Harris only played on 3rd down on that series; clearly on a snap count

- Aha! We do come back to the RPO I mentioned earlier. Exact same play, but this time Drew dumps it off to Vannett for an easy 7 yard
- I know a few of you have requested I focus in on Phil for this game. Here is another run of his that is stuffed at the LOS. There really isn't anything Phil can do here. Fant is man handled at the LOS by the OLB, and the Dotson/Glasgow double team inside doesn't get any movement on Chris Jones. Nice aggressive fill by the MLB too

- Great ball location by Drew on 3rd and 4. The presnap motion meant Drew knew it was man coverage, and Sorensen gave Fant a huge cushion. That gave him a window on the out route and he hits Fant perfectly in stride. Gordon does really well to read the inside blitz, even if the block itself isn't exactly textbook

- Really poor stuff on the stretch zone to the right. Glasgow can't stay on Jones when Dotson peels off the double team, then Vannett and Beck (FB) block the same guy whilst leaving a free OLB to disrupt the run. 2 yard gain for Gordon. Glasgow is definitely playing hurt. He's taking like 10 seconds to get up after every play
- Like the WR flare play to Hamler where he makes those moves after the catch. Just get your playmakers the ball. First down on 3rd and 8
- Now THAT is how you finish a double team, Dotson. Watch him take over the LE (92) from Vannett and drive him into the floor. Not great contain by the Chiefs CB and this should have gone for more if not for Gordon slipping.
Glasgow got decked by the ILB

Further 1st quarter notes

- I have had to miss a few plays on this drive of ours because the video was being really blurry for some reason ... They are still a tad grainy, so apologies for this.
- Stand out play was probably the 3rd and 2 where Lindsay got the edge to get a 1st. It was our signature run play, but with Schlottmann pulling on his very first snap. A DB shot the hole and Schlottmann does really well to get something on him to allow Phil to convert
- We really caught a break on that flare we tried throwing to Fant, when Clark got a tip on it. Sorensen reads the flare the entire way, and he's probably taking it to the house if Clark doesn't deflect it
- 3rd and 10, Jeudy isn't on the field in 3 WR formation (Hamilton, Patrick, Hamler). If he's too hurt to not be on the field for 3rd down, why is he active? No Fant in the game, either. We go max protect with both Freeman and Vannett staying in to block. However, this means only 3 routes are being ran and nobody is open. Lock makes the correct decision to climb the pocket and attempt to scramble for the 1st.
It's actually a really good play by Niemann (MLB) to stop Drew 2 yards shy. FG is good, 3-0 Broncos with 4 mins left in the 1st

- Not a good angle by Kareem Jackson here. Use the sideline as a defender, attack the inside shoulder. An easy additional 10 yards on the back of it. What I will say - look at the ball location from Mahomes. It hits Bell perfectly in stride to allow him to then make a guy miss. It's the little things. How hard is it for us to get 15 yard plays? Well, that is how easy you can get them on 1st down with proper execution

- 1st down, another example of Andy Reid playing chess. He gets us in our base 3-4, which is when we are really short of pass rush. You traditionally will drop one of your OLBs on 1st and 10 from a base 3-4 against a passing play (Reed in this instance). That means you have 3 interior rushers, and only 1 outside rusher. We don't get much of any pass rush from the inside, so that is a problem for us.
It's a really deep drop off Play Action and the Chiefs leave a TE to block. Look at how deep Justin Simmons is. At the top of Mahomes' drop, Simmons is 27 yards from the LOS. We are in Cover 3 robber I believe, and Kelce's seven route is that good he beats double coverage for an uncontested catch.
All 3 WRs are open vs 6 defenders in coverage. We are so worried about the deep ball, Reid calls 20 yard comeback routes because he knows a) the protection will be there against us on 1st down and b) the Safeties are too deep to make a play on the ball.
2 plays, 33 yards

- The officials somehow miss this false start by Kelce. Play goes for 15 on a simple hitch out to Robinson, as Bouye gets his back turned

- Harris seems to be playing exclusively in our Nickel defense thus far. He gets a great jump on a 2nd and 5 RB screen attempt by the Chiefs, disrupting the timing and it only goes for a yard when Johnson makes the play
- No pass rush on 3rd and 4, but Shelby gets his hands on the ball to force the FG. It's a good job, because Kelce had wrestled his way open vs Ojemudia right over the middle. FG is good, 3-3

- Last play of the Quarter is a perfecttttttt play call and execution. It's a play action HB screen. All the motion goes to the right and Drew sells the deep shot fake. The dump off is perfect and Gordon has nothing but green grass and two OL (Risner, Glasgow) out in front of him.
Pause the video below at 5 seconds. WHY is Dalton Risner looking back in field for someone to block?!?!? Melvin Gordon is an NFL RB, not an 80 year old lady. He isn't getting caught in field. Get your *** up field with Glasgow and hit one of the DBs ..... Gordon didn't look great in the open field here too, it must be said.
This play went for 11 but that was a poor result given how much more we should have got. Great call, great sell and timing by Drew.

Some 2nd quarter notes

- 2nd and 10, we are in 11 personnel (3 WR, 1 TE). It's a pretty standard trap run, and it's really well executed. We 'trap' the RE with Glasgow (now back in), whilst both Bolles washes out the DT and Fant does a nice job to seal the ILB. Hamilton doesn't feel the CB run blitz, but Gordon does well to make him miss. Again, if not for slipping this play is going for at least another 8 yards. Great execution. Good timing on the call as well, as Spags (Chiefs DC) was trying to get cute with a blitz (Sorensen the Safety in the A gap)

- 3rd and 2 we try the PA bootleg with the quick dump off to Vannett. Quick pressure means Drew has to get the ball out, and Sorensen reads it the whole way to stop it short of the 1st down. There is no way he could have got the ball, but Beck was wideeeeeee off the play action. I wonder if we will try and go back to that. Punt

- This isn't a hold according to the officials .... Attaochu smokes Remmers inside, who tugs Attaochu clearly but it isn't called. Mahomes escapes and fires an unreal ball on the run to Kelce on the crosser for a 20 yard gain.

- Chiefs go RPO on 1st and 10. Mahomes pulls it, tries to hit Hill on the slant from the slot but D Williams gets the deflection. Nice move by D Williams to go from one A gap to the other and penetrate before the deflection. He gets a pat on the shoulder from Mahomes for the play
- 3rd and 4 we try the slot blitz from Bassey. Smart play by Watkins who just sinks at the sticks, Mahomes gets it to him hot and the Chiefs just convert as Simmons makes the tackle
- I mean, just look at the athleticism in this play. The Chiefs do so much presnap. This time, Hill runs the 'ghost' motion which causes havoc for our man coverage. Its Simmons who is on him, who shows unreal speed to even have a chance of making the play by coming from the other side of the field. Unfortunately, he stops his feet and Hill just breezes around him like Simmons isn't a 4.40 40 guy.
It's a perfect man coverage play call. In zone, the flat defender blows that up

- Another RPO and Mahomes pulls it again. He rolls the to the right and tries to hit Hardman on the out route, but Bouye breaks it up (this is the play Mahomes told Hardman to come back to the ball, for anyone who watched the game on TV). All this motion and misdirection makes it so hard to get any consistent pass rush. Inside pressure is absolutely essential and we just don't have it
- Chiefs go WR screen but Bouye makes a great read. It's a good job Hill drops it, because he's about to get absolutely smoked by Bouye who (smartly) pulls out when the ball is dropped
- 3rd and 10 is the Hill drop that well, wasn't a drop ... We go with 3 DL (Chubb, Jones, Reed) 2 LBs and bring in Holder as another LB. It's Cover 0, 7 man blitz. In truth, it's a bad throw from Mahomes. He just needs to put air on it and let Hill run under it, because Hill has just blown Bouye away. The adjustment Hill has to make to go upfield leads to the bobble. Punt

- 1st and 10 Broncos, this is a bad read by Phil on the counter run. Fant is the block he should be reading, and Fant is clearly blocking his man inside so Phil has to cut it outside. Instead, he goes inside and the play is stopped for 4 yards. We keep leaving yards on the field on Offense. That should have gone for a 1st down, no question

 - Nice cut by Phil this time when Cush gets bumped back, but that's a lot of green grass to be 1v1 with a LB. Make a play; make the guy miss. Move the ball to your other hand and get your stiff arm out. Goes down way too easily for me here

- Perfect, perfect call by Shurmur on 3rd and 3. The Chiefs DL is aligned so wide. Both DEs in the wide 9 technique, and 1 DT in the C gap and 1 DT in the B gap when the ball is snapped. They only have 1 actual LB in the game, as Sorensen is playing as a small LB.
It's a pull from Risner and the timing from Dotson is beautiful. I LOVE the shove on the B gap DT. He could easily have gone straight to the 2nd level as Glasgow had him, but the shove is what creates the crease for Gordon.
Dotson then leads Risner to the LB and finally he seals off Sorensen from the weakside. I don't think we talk enough about Dotson's play this year. He's playing (at worst) like an above average RT which is unbelievable value for the deal he is on.
What I like about this play is that it's wrinkle from our usual shotgun run, whereby we usually go outside. Mathieu takes an angle thinking it's going to the outside, but it goes straight up the gut.
Really impressive speed from Gordon; Mathieu ain't catching him. It's only Thornhill that has the gas to get there

- We try going with another counter for Phil, this time to the weakside of the formation. No chance for him. Fant gets controlled by Clark at the LOS, and the run is stopped for no gain
- Really nice job by Fant by selling the block on this PA bootleg. He stays on the block long enough for the LCB (Ward) to start looking for work in field, at which point Fant breaks off his block and the flat is wide open.
Would love to know why the personal foul for helmet to helmet contact isn't called as well. The officiating has not been good in this game. I never moan about the officials in these reviews, but it's impossible to ignore thus far

- 1st and goal from the 7. Gordon should score here, really. One of Cush's better run blocks of the year, as he shows really powerful hands to get Nnadi (DT) to the floor. If Gordon just stays low and burrows, he's in. But he's too high, so Mathieu and Sorensen can keep him out.
Not really a fan of how he carries the ball either here, especially considering he nearly threw the game away against Miami doing the exact same thing

- Illegal shift, now 2nd and 5
- Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant play design from Shurmur. Patrick hides as a FB in the backfield, feigns the run block assignment presnap (lovely touch) then leaks out after the play action. Jeudy gets the CB running in field to create the space and it's an easy score.
Straight out of the Andy Reid playbook this (Shurmur is an Andy Reid disciple, by the way)

Further 2nd quarter notes

- As usual, the play design on this reverse by Hill is amazing. It's really clever stuff from Kelce too, as he leaves Chubb (the end man on the LOS) because he knows he has no shot at getting to Hill. Chubb has to respect the run fake, so he's coming down the line of scrimmage as Hill is coming underneath. This allows Kelce to get out in front of our contain.
Honestly, I really don't know how you can stop this play. Very quick penetration from an interior DL maybe, but Hill is just going to our run them. A Safety coming down, maybe? Simmons went with the Hardman motion, so he's out of there.
It's just A+ play design. We really should run the exact same play with Hamler, to be honest.
My final comment on this has to be the hussle from Shelby Harris. How does a 300lbs man initially go left, then somehow have the fitness/speed/desire to run down TYREEK HILL to save a touchdown? Maybe the most incredible defensive play of the season.

- The next play, Mahomes scrambles for 20. Johnson is playing deep underneath coverage of Kelce, Jewell is in man coverage of the RB so there is no spy at all. The spacing of our pass rush is poor, so Mahomes has an easy lane to escape through
- 2nd and goal from the 1, Justin Simmons makes an all pro tackle to save a TD. He isn't fooled by the motion, sees the run and shoots the gap. Perfect form tackle

- The Chiefs try another Hill run on a reverse. Problem is that the fake is an option play to the left. The end man on the play side of the formation, Reed, can't make that play anyway so he stays with the motion and runs right into the play. Reed shows great footwork to just hold Hill up and allow the cavalry to arrive.
If the run fake was a zone run, Reed might have been tempted to come down the LOS and bite on the fake.
Too cute from Reid, that. The ball is at the 1. Just run it in. FG is good. 10 - 6 Broncos with 2.30 left in the 2nd

- 1st and 10, this time its us who get away with a hold and it is sooooo blatant. Look at the tug from Garrett Bolles. Frank Clark makes an unbelievable read as he sees the motion and times the snap count. Without the tug, Clark smashes Lindsay for a 5 yard loss. Instead, Lindsay somehow makes 3 yards out of it. 13 yard swing because of poor officiating

- Reallllllly savvy stufff by Drew to go hard count on the 2 minute warning. Free 5 yards
- Nice wash by Schlottmann on Jones on 2nd and 2. Easy 5 for Phil and a 1st
- This is an incomplete pass, but I just want to show you the route running of Jerry Jeudy. The quick inside release has him up on the corner instantly. By taking away the cushion, the CB has to respect Jeudy going deep. Jeudy then stops on a dime and the CB falls down.
I know this play wasn't designed for him, but any time Jerry Jeudy is running a come back route against press man coverage with only a single high safety, I am going his way.
Schlottmann gets obliterated by Chris Jones on this play. Barrels him right into Drew. Why are we leaving Schlottmann 1v1 against maybe the 2nd best DT in the league? Bolles, on the other hand, pancakes Frank Clark.

- Great call by Shurmur this time, as we use Jones' aggressiveness against him. Jones, thinking it is pass inside of 2 mins, goes outside and up field but it's an inside run play. That leaves a hugeeee hole right up the gut and Gordon does an excellent job of setting up #98 before cutting it back into the hole. 5 yards after contact by Melvin as well

- I saw this clip on twitter and Drew caught some heat for it. That is wrong in my opinion. The entire play is designed to 'pick' whoever is in man coverage on Fant (Sorensen) to give Fant a free run down the sideline. I think it's a bad route from Patrick. He has to see Sorensen is in press on Fant, so he has to run his slant closer to the LOS, thus forcing Sorensen to change his angle. Still, it's great awareness from Sorensen to avoid Patrick's pick. It isn't there, so Drew throws it away.
Now, Drew got flack for this because Jerry Jeudy kills a man at the top of the screen. He gets the CB turned around and he's wide open. But it is on the totally opposite side of where the play is designed to go. Sure, Drew could have maybe come all the way back after seeing Fant wasn't there, but the clock is rolling and it is 1st down.
What I would say is that any time Jerry Jeudy is running anything that comes back to the QB in single man coverage, I am looking his way. Perhaps we should call plays as such?

- We try going back to the well with a shotgun run; our signature run play where Risner pulls. Sorensen makes a brilliant play, shooting the gap left by Risner to totally disrupt the run, despite missing the tackle. In our two games against the Chiefs this year, Sorensen has been the Chiefs best defensive player; no question.
- Illegal formation (again). 3rd and 12
- For everything he does well, Noah Fant is AWFUL at following screens. What is he thinking here? Dotson couldn't make it any more obvious he wants you to cut it inside. For some reason, Fant goes outside and allows Mathieu to make a play on him. This was a PERFECT play call, PERFECT execution and it should have gone for 20 yards.
Instead, it's 4th down and we miss the FG. Unbelievable.

- 27 seconds left, Chiefs have it on their 47. Bouye gets turned around by Hardman, 20 yard out route and stops the clock
- Just a casual back foot fling into tight coverage (with defensive holding) to hit Kelce perfectly in stride by Mahomes. Chubb gets a good bull rush inside, and Reed beats Remmers outside but Mahomes is just so good

- Good pressure from Shelby Harris forces Mahomes to dump it down. 2nd and goal from the 5. 7 seconds left
- Then Harris bats the pass away. Ojemudia in decent coverage anyway. FG is good, 10-9 to us

I didn't realise until now just how important of a play that Noah Fant screen was. That was a 6 point swing for sure.

some 3rd quarter notes

- Walker gets pushed off the ball by the double team, Bell goes for 16 yards. Feel like Jewell should also have attacked Kelce more aggressively too (Kelce was lead blocker as a FB)
- Kelce then smokes Jewell in a 1v1 from the slot. Simple little hesi from Kelce gets Jewell to bit on the out route, and Kelce comes back over the middle for 15
- Chiefs then go play action from under Center. Mahomes, going to his left, zings a ball into Hill for 15 more. Chiefs cookin' here
- 15 more on the RPO, as the backup TE sneaks across the formation
- Nice play by Attaochu as he bumps the RB after Play Action, throwing him off the route and the ball is incomplete
- Good coverage here on 2nd down. Looks like Mahomes' first read is Kelce, but we bracket him with both of our Safeties. Bassey stays with Watkins long enough to force Mahomes to scramble, but unfortunately you can see this is the play Bassey got hurt.
Nice pressure by Jones, as he swats the RG's hands away to beat him. Another hold not called too, as Jones is clearly held by the RG

- Coverage sack on 3rd down. We go zone coverage and Jewell, Jackson and Ojemudia get their spacing perfect against Hill and Kelce. Mahomes doesn't have time to come back across the field with his read and Attaochu sneaks in for the sack. FG is good, 12-10 Chiefs

- This run has a decent chance, but Bolles whiffs on his block. I must say - Phil still has to cut this back and make the ILB make the play in open space. There was no way this was going outside, and Phil makes a poor decision to bounce it

- We then try just slamming Phil up in the line. Mathieu fills the B gap well, play goes for 3
- 3rd and 7 converts on the quick out to Hamler. Forces a (poor) missed tackle after catching short of the sticks. Good location by Drew to give him a chance. 1st down
- We go with a trap run to the left from under Center, and with Beck in the game. The trap doesn't work, as Schlottmann whiffs on Clark at RE. Gordon somehow bounces it for 5. Ugly looking play, really
- A lot to like about this play. We go max protect off play action. The Chiefs are in Cover 1 and the LBs bite quite hard on the fake. Drew's first read is the go route to Jeudy and I like his patience here. Jeudy does enough to ensure Sorensen (Cover 1 Safety) has to stay on top of him. That means Patrick is 1v1 on the crosser, so Drew switches on to him and delivers a good ball in stride. Good patience, good rhythm and timing on the play.
I let the film run so you can see Dotson smash the crap out of Jones. Clark's effort leaves a lot to be desired too

- Nice little wrinkle our usual bootleg, here. We usually align the TE to the play side of the formation. However, this time we bring the strongside WR over the formation to be the target on the bootleg and the space is totally vacant. Nice adjustment by Shurmur

- We try going heavy, 22 personnel (1 RB, 1 FB, 2 TE) and we go zone run right. Fault on both Phil and the OL here. I don't like Cush's decision to to try and run to the playside LB here. At what point do you think, "I am never getting to this guy so I should find someone else"? If Cush just blocks the backside LB, there is a decent hole for Phil to cut into.
Instead, Phil puts on way too big of a cut, practically stops and is swallowed up by the pursuit.

- 2nd one I have nailed in this game's review! We copy the Chiefs end around that Hill ran, and we use Hamler. Bit strange that we ran it to the boundary rather than the field, but it is still a success. It might have got more if Fant actually blocked the guy. Not his finest game, this.

- We try going PA bootleg on 1st down, but Mathieu reads is really well and cuts off Jeudy. Drew throws it away
- This is what happens when we leave Jones 1v1 with Schlottmann. Brutal. Just completely outmatched. Jones basically bench presses Schlottmann. We get a very dodgy DPI call, 1st down

- The fade from Lock to Patrick is just perfect. What a throw ... TD. 2 point conversion fails. 16-12 to us

Fant definitely lacks football instincts.  He’s still going to be a good contributing TE for a long time just because of his athleticism, but man his feel for the game is suspect.

He is still so young (Just turned 23) that I'm not too worried about the instincts part yet. He has made lots of improvements from year 1 to 2 and I'm expecting a similar jump next year as well in one of the hardest positions to transition to from college.

It does seem from the tape analysis that Lindsay's vision and his elusiveness this game weren't where we've seen before.   Sure, there are a few plays where no one is winning, but the 3 missed reads and the missed 1 on 1, to me that's  indicative either he's hurt, or just wearing down as the season goes on.     Good to get confirmation, I have to admit it was the first thing that struck me watching the game live, but as we all know, that can be deceiving.

Seems like he's definitely overthinking to me. Then he counters that by being too decisive and diving straight into the line.

Just needs to get back to his letting his natural instincts flow.

This was a really good summary of some of Drew Locks plays before George is able to review some himself.

Not trying to shoot the messenger - but that conclusion & tag line is misleading - 1 game vs. a bad D isn’t a huge leap.  Otherwise the analysis is decent.   Definite progress.  A leap usually means it’s sticking, though.  I think we all know it’s premature to go there.

Much appreciated as always.

To be fair Lock did okay against an okay Chief's defense.
