Oklahoma City EF5s

Offense (1st half: 60/40 run/pass, 2nd half: 40/60 run/pass)

-          We want to use a heavy variety of formations to keep the Berlin defense on its toes. Base 11 personnel is what we’re starting in, but 4WR and 21 (2 RB/1TE/2WR) sets will also be common as we run our offense through Pat Mahomes’ arm. James White is a perfect fit for Mahomes’ style of play, and we want to get him on the field for 40% of the snaps, either alongside bellcow Joe Mixon or to give him a breather.

-          Many moons ago, Robert Woods was famously used all over the field for USC, including as a receiver out of the backfield. We’ll be doing the same with him here, lining him up out the shotgun next to Mahomes in 21 personnel, getting him in motion to eliminate the jam at the line, or motioning him into the slot from other places on the field. This should force Berlin to pick their poison between Woods and Robinson, as we don’t really respect their young secondary with zero players with 20 starts under their belts.

-          Only one tight end active today, but we will sub in Brian O’Neill a few times as TE2 for Brandin Cooks, especially in goal line sets. If we get down inside the 10, we’ll be running a designed pass for O’Neill in the style of the Vrabel play the Patriots used to run.

Defense

-          Tuitt is moving outside to play the big end role for us, just as he did in college. This should give us a better run-stopping group in base. He’ll play a lot inside in place of Sheldon Richardson as well, with Rasheem Green picking up snaps at end. Jarrad Davis will also move to end on passing downs to take advantage of his pass-rushing ability (6 sacks in 2018). This should help keep our DL fresh bring as much pass rush support as possible.

-          We have a number of OL activated as emergency DL for this game; they don’t have to play well, they’re just there to soak up snaps to keep the starters healthy. We’re hoping to get 2-3 snaps out of each of the emergency DL (DL6-8).

-          The DBs will match up with the Berlin skill players based on formation, with Byron Jones shadowing Hunter Henry in 2WR sets. All of our corners can match up with the Berlin receivers in man, so we’ll be playing 2 deep safeties to force Green Bay to keep everything underneath and sustain long drives. White playing slot in base should further limit Rodgers' reads and force more difficult throws to the sidelines.

Berlin Blitzkrieg

Offense
Overview - OKC has two excellent corners in White and Jones and 3 very good safeties.  However, they are very thin in their front 7.  So that’s where we attack.

We are going to run a lot from all formations.  Jones is going to get a ton of carries and only get replaced when necessary.  We want to wear down OKC’s DL and let our OL lean on them.

We will also use Rodgers in the run game to take some pressure off Jones.  We will utilize rollouts, especially off playaction, to let Rodgers pick up cheap yards on the ground to extend drives.

2 TE - We are going to play 60% 2 TEs to make them put all three of their LBs on the field, which we think is a big advantage for us. Or they keep 3 safeties on the field which gives us a blocking advantage.

OBJ and Hollywood will play outside WR, and we are going to give them their opportunities to go deep down the field, but will use plenty of quick passes to just get the ball in their hands and see what they can do.  If OKC doesn’t have a safety sitting directly over the top, we will take a deep shot.  If they try to sit in Cover 1, we will throw it up to either side and dare the safety to get over in time.  If they do sit in Cover 2, we will use more underneath passes to take advantage of the open space.

Henry is going to get plenty of targets this game.  We want to attack their linebackers down the seam, especially when the safeties are split in Cover 2.  Irv will also be used on occasion to attack the seam, but will mostly be used elsewhere.

Irv and Jones are going to serve as outlet and check down options running various slants, screens, drags, outs, and underneath routes.  Assuming their top LB or S is on Henry, we think this will give Irv and Jones favorable matchups.

3 WR - 30% of our offense will be a 3 WR set with Kirk or MVS coming in for Irv.  Hollywood will go to the slot.  We are going to use this later in each half when their DL is exhausted to spread things out a bit so Rodgers has more room to work.  We will use a quick passing game to supplement our running game in this set.  But look for a number of draws, delays, and screens here.

3 TE - 10% of our offense will have Akins coming in for OBJ, leaving just Hollywood out wide.  This will be used mostly in goalline situations.  However, we will also use it occasionally in the middle of the field because, if OKC doesn’t put a safety over Hollywood, we will throw it up and see if his speed can give us a big gain whether he catches it or gets a DPI.  If they do put the safety over the top, we have a numbers advantage in the box.

Defense
Overview - We will rotate our front four to get pressure while having our CBs play press man to take away quick passes.  We will also play two deep safeties to erase the deep ball.  Our LBs will play hybrid zone/man roles.

DL - OKC has a talented OL, but we think our defensive line, which we will rotate with some frequency as our backups prove more capable, will still prove effective.  Derrick Brown had a very nice debut, so we will bring him in more often, especially on early downs to defend against the run.

On obvious passing downs, we will move Z and DLaw to DT and bring in two of Hendrickson, Lorenzo, and Golden at DE for a NASCAR-type package to put extra heat on Mahomes.

3 WR
LB - We are going to have our two LBs initially sit in middle zones.  This will 1.  remove easy crossing routes.  2.  allow the LBs to break from those zones to follow a RB or TE that releases to that side.  3.  allow a LB who didn’t have to follow the RB or TE to spy Mahomes.

This will also allow our LBs to have initial keys that will allow them to limit Mixon’s effectiveness.

DB - We are very happy to get Kendall Fuller back this week and he steps right into the slot.  This will let us put Rock and Byron outside.  While Fuller is a very good NB, we know that Byron and Rock have shown both excellent play and not-so-good play in their young careers.  We are going to have Fuller take the slot WR while Byron and Rock will typically play press man on the outside WRs.  Both are physical, feisty CBs so this fits their nature.  This will also keep OKC from using a quick passing game.  We will play some Cover 2 press zone coverage from this press set just so we aren’t completely predictable.  We will try to make this look exactly the safe as press man to not give Mahomes any hints.

That said, we know our young outside CBs will make some mistakes.  So we will have our safeties sitting in Cover 2 almost the entire game to limit, if not prevent, any deep damage.  Plus, Mahomes loves the deep ball and we want to take that away.

4 WR
If OKC uses a 4th WR, Joyner will play the other slot position coming in for Bentley.  We will mix up a Cover 2 press zone and man pretty evenly with Rashaan spying Mixon with the same concept as the 3 WR set.

2 RB/1 TE - Fuller will stay in the game and play almost a WLB position, following whichever of the RBs or TE that releases first to his side.  If no one releases, he will sit in a middle zone to his side of the formation.

If possible, I want to allow James White to play in this game.

I'm surprised to see White is inactive, I wasn't aware that he was hurt or anything. But nah, I already can't put a full 8 man bench in on either side of the ball, lol. It's fine.

I also wish to make it clear we extend no such courtesy to Berlin, which listed two players among their starting corners who are inactive this week.

Yeah, but I have two corners to sub in.

You have no other RB and the situation is so extreme I wanted to at least try to be a good sport.

I appreciate it, but no, we'll just ignore that part of the gameplan.
