Nothing surprising. Still expect to see large IPs multiplatform and then maybe some new franchises or smaller stuff XBOX/PC exclusive.

I still think Fallout, Starfield, Elder Scrolls will all release multi platform.

Starfield will absolutely be Xbox/PC exclusive.

They wanna be more than just the group that makes Fallout/TES. Making their next big game exclusive would be antithetical to that.

Microsoft isn't purchasing Bethesda for $7.5B to let their new IPs not be exclusive.

I would bet legit cash money on this, but that's not permitted here.

Being Xbox first party and on gamepass puts every game cloud capable day one and actually one of the bigger reasons why I think they came together.

Their games will be on Xbox, PC and Mobile (via xcloud), that's well over 75 or even 85 percent of the industry.
I get what you're saying, but they'd be fine.

I don't think so

If it is, it'd be because of preexisting agreements I'd imagine.

Starfield and Indiana Jones are the only two games right now that aren't pre-existing game franchises that there would be some bad blood for taking away part of a series.. (Ghostwire and Deathloop are but are timed PS exclusives.) And the biggest ones, Elder Scrolls and Fallout are new stories and parts of the world everytime, each one is self contained so you aren't really taking away a conclusion from anyone there like you would say a Wolfenstein 3.

Looking at the "case by case" exclusivity

  • Deathloop (Timed PS exclusive for a year), perhaps a sequel stays multi-plat but it seems like it'll be a one and done.
  • Ghostwire Tokyo (Timed PS exclusive for a year), perhaps a sequel stays multi-plat
  • Starfield - Probably Xbox exclusive, at the very least a year exclusive like Sony tried to get for it.
  • Wolfenstein 3 - Will be multiplat, maybe slightly early on Xbox
  • Doom 3 - Will be multiplat, maybe slightly early on Xbox
  • Indiana Jones - Exclusive unless there was a preexisting deal with Lucasfilm/Disney.
  • Arkane Austin's Next Game - Exclusive
  • Zenimax Online's 2 new games - Exclusive unless maybe they too are big online games like Elder Scrolls Online, then maybe you keep it everywhere.
  • The Elder Scrolls VI - Harder to say, given the anthology like nature of the series there is a clean narrative break to go exclusive. Could launch early at least.
  • Fallout 5 - Hard to say, given the anthology like nature of the series there is a clean narrative break to go exclusive. Could launch early at least. I think either Zenimax online will be making it, but could be Obsidian/Inxile too. Otherwise it'd be 15 years between iterations.

I have a PS5 and a PC, so worst case I would just play them on PC, but I think you underestimate the PS5 market share for console only owners. I am too lazy to look up the data.

I could 100% see either ESVI or Starfield being exclusive, but not both. So if I had to guess, SF is exclusive.

I think if anything, Microsoft will be less bullish on removing franchises that have historically been multiplat from that ecosphere. Hence why I am nearly certain Starfield will be MS exclusive.

Right now the PS5 market share is pretty small. Sony as a whole with PS4 is massive compared to Xbox on it's own yeah.
But both sides are growing their new base for this generation while production continues to be slow. Sony's historic advantage will wane, just by nature of Xbox not completely messing up everything like they did most of last gen. You add in the PC market plus the prospective of mobile and tv apps with xCloud, I don't see Sony's userbase being that much of a deterrent.

Especially because of the possible extra revenue Microsoft would get out of people beyond the $60-70 single game purchase, which they would lose what like 15% or whatever it is to sony on the digital marketplace. Gamepass Ultimate is $180 for a year if you don't buy it on sale, they get the console sales, and they get a cut of every transaction on their marketplace. If people are on PC they are feeding them money that way too with windows, office, etc.

If you're Microsoft and you aren't contractually obligated to release Starfield on PS5 this fall or next spring, would you not take your shot to say....

"Here's Bethesda's next game, here's Halo Infinite, btw Hellblade 2 is coming early next year, here is Fable, Avowed, Perfect Dark and all this stuff coming out the next two years...oh and it's all on gamepass."

Like they want to get people on Gamepass, selling them on premium experiences is the one thing they've been building towards.
It'd be like Disney+ letting the Mandalorian be on Netflix.

Where is that statistic coming from?  That seems absurdly high.  Is that accounting for overlap of XBox/PC gamers?  I probably don't understand the mobile portion, but wouldn't that number just include people who already own an XBox or PC to have access to XCloud, or are there mobile players that don't have either XBox or PC, and strictly play xcloud on mobile?

I can also see them with the marketing tactic of "Starfield is coming to all consoles this Fall, but is included for free with GamePass Ultimate on Xbox consoles and PC." This is still keeping the revenue from PS5 owners but also a big bonus to those who own an Xbox or PC. They win either way, but one way gives them access to 100% of the market.

These numbers will obviously not be accurate now because these were just launch numbers, but Fallout 4 sold 5.19 million units in its first week across all platforms, and 58% of those were on PS4. (source https://www.psu.com/news/fallout-4-sold-over-5-million-in-first-week-ps4-sales-ahead-of-xbox-one-version/). This is less than 2 years after the PS4 launched. We wont know what the PS5 - Series X split is for a while since they are still pretty much unavailable, but this is just to show that your 15% number is wildly unrealistic.

If this helps, estimates show so far world wide sales of PS5 and Xbox are 4.5 million for PS5 and 2.4 million Seriex X|S units (source https://www.techspot.com/news/88336-ps5-sold-nearly-twice-many-units-2020-xbsx.html).

It is also NOT like the Mandalorian going on Netflix. It would be like Disney partners with Samsung and says you can only watch the Mandalorian on Samsung TVs. That's not even a great example, it's not comparable because you can access Disney+ and Netflix on any device. There is a piece of hardware here that the average Joe will not be buying another console just to access if they already own a PS5. This is why MS doing all of this on PC too is brilliant - they've given up competing with Sony on console sales.
