Chargers
Who should be the starter for next week?
Zappaz
I don't see how this is even in question. Herbert found out minutes before kickoff that he was going to be the starter, without any preseason or much practice with the 1s, facing the defending champs in the first ever home game in the new $5b stadium... proceeded to march the ball down the field on his first drive then call his own number to rush for his first TD and first for the franchise in the stadium. To me that was a passing of the torch moment, here we are in this new place which will be where we'll play for many years and the rookie who was chosen to take over from Rivers ends up starting unexpectedly then ends up getting the first TD. The offense just moved better with him in. Sure he did make some bad plays, some mistakes including a critical INT when he could have taken a few more steps for a first down, but that's to be expected from a rookie with no experience and he'll learn from those mistakes. For each mistake he made it seemed like he would come back and make it up. When he took that bad sack instead of getting rid of the ball on the broken screen play then the next play throws a DIME to Allen for the first down... that shows mentally he can put stuff behind him. That play was damn impressive for a rookie the way he felt the immediate pressure then took a quick hop step to give himself just enough time to get the throw off. The throw itself was risky but absolutely perfect over one defender right into Keenan's hands. When I saw the play live I thought it was an incompletion because there was no room from the TV view. I think he proved he is ready, that while there may be some bad spots and lessons learned he has the talent push this team well beyond where Tyrod Taylor can take it. The moment was not too big for Justin Herbert.
kramxel
Given Tyrod's story that just came out he might not be starting for at least a few weeks.
BoltsFan937
Herbert impressed me last week. Im cautious though as KC prepared for Tyrod then got thrown a curveball. This happens in the NFL, heck Duck freakin Hodges had a good game against us last year. When coaches don’t have tape and haven’t prepared, they can be caught off guard. Remember when Mayfield took the world by storm for Cleveland? Now he’s league average or below. Herberts gonna start due to Tyrods injury. If he lights it up this week, then it’s gonna be hard to put that cat back in the bag. I’m tempering my expectations. I trust the coaching staff and what they see in practice that we don’t know about. Loved what I saw from Herbert, but would still prefer this be a learning year where he backs up a vet QB

I mean dude only had 132yds against us with 8 of his 15 completions going to RBs for 92 of his 132 yds lol. Reason we lost was Rivers 2 picks and 1 fumble lost. Also you can't really say that sitting guarantees success either. At the end of the day the player either has it or doesn't. While I do feel bad for Taylor... he just isn't the guy who needs to be leading this team. We have too many weapons to have someone who wont push the ball down field. Taylor has been in the league since 2011 and has 1 game with over 300yds passing... that just doesn't cut it. He's the safe pick but not the right pick for QB. BoltsFan937
How long are we gonna stick with this turd coaching staff? I like Lynn on a personal level, but we get outcoached every week. Praying we move on after this season and go for Bienemy or somebody else.
Zappaz
I agree. Herbert has shown he has the potential, not sure this staff has what it takes to maximize his potential though. Also here we go with the injuries again...

Lynn is tied with Telesco and that means they both go down together. I think this Herbert pick is gonna buy both 2 more seasons. Frustrating to see but it's par for the course for the Spanos clan. Oregon Ducks
Herbert gives us the best chance now and for the future but I don't like all the shots he takes. We hardly gave him time today and he still made things happen (his receivers weren't great either.)

Plenty of GM’s have turned teams around a lot quicker than he has, not sure why he gets so much love. In 2018 we went to KC and pulled out a crazy win on a 2 point conversion then later on went to Baltimore and won a playoff game. Literally those are the last two games that come to mind that I thought were well coached and we won Edited September 28, 2020 by BoltsFan937
Oregon Ducks
Glad we stuck with #10, although we took him out for a couple plays for some reason...

I’m not giving Herbert the anointing oils quite yet, but I’m willing to say I was completely wrong on him. I never thought he’d be this good, especially this soon. He’s been flat out amazing so far. Really hope we give this kid an offensive line (hardly ever did with Rivers) and some weapons to work with. I was admittedly down on Herbert during the draft process (as were a lot of people), how did we seemingly miss so bad on this kid?

I was admittedly down on Herbert during the draft process (as were a lot of people), how did we seemingly miss so bad on this kid? Lack of weapons should not be an argument. #7 overall pick and Keenan Allen at WR. Hunter Henry is great when on the field. Herbert has plenty of weapons to be successful. I'd like to add a decent inside the tackle running back though to relieve some of the pressure off him. The line has performed much better. I don't know how much of that is Campen though or the departure of Rivers which Duffman broke down last year pretty well. It's such a difference defense with DJ. Chargers are likely a better team then I thought but once again held back by injuries and coaching. Herbert has far exceeded expectations and if he can continue to develop and show more consistency has a lot of potential in the league. BoltsFan937
By weapons I meant an every down RB and a speed WR like Tyreek Hills or Ruggs. Allen and Willliams are great, but they’re not scaring anyone deep. And why does Williams have games like the one against New Orleans and then a one catch four yard performance against the Jags? Henry goes the same way, would like to see more consistency out of both guys. The running game HAS to be fixed. Herbert was our leading rusher last week, that’s obviously not gonna work.
