soulman
Javon Wims earning his role with Chicago Bears by Parker Hurley 9 minutes ago Follow @parkerhurley https://beargoggleson.com/2020/09/22/javon-wims-earning-role-chicago-bears/ JavoWims is going to continue to see playing time for the Chicago Bears When Riley Ridley was inactive in favor of Javon Wims, it was no surprise to us after finding out how much more value Javon Wims had on special teams in 2019 than Ridley. However, the bigger surprise has been that Wims did not get the helmet over Ridley due to special teams- he has played just two snaps. The Chicago Bears saw his growth on special teams as an indicator that he was ready for more time on offense. So far, he has thrived. Sure, Wims has just 18 yards in two games, although one comes with a touchdown. However, where he has impacted the game most is as a run blocker. According to PFF, Wims is the best run blocker on the team so far. Wims has been active in that area, and even in the play below, you see him shine in the screen game. The technique, engagement and effort is all there. Plus, you have to love that he finished with a flex, taking pride in his craft. The Bears run four wide receiver sets, but have had to find ways to get Wims on the field. Many would assume that means Darnell Mooney coming off, but Mooney was second on the team in snaps played. For the most part, Wims has spelled Anthony Miller. What is worth noting is that Wims has 26 run blocking snaps, while Miller is in on just 14 running plays. On the other side, Miller has ran 39 routes, and Wims has ran 26. With a mix of both, and sometimes Mooney taking a seat as well, the two are in a platoon as the number three wide receiver where they currently stand. Next: Robert Quinn flashes despite rotational role That is one heck of a fall for Miller, who was a consensus number two a few weeks ago, but even more impressive rise for Javon Wims, who many had on the roster bubble this summer. However, with Miller recording two drops, and Wims shining as a blocker, the split will likely continue for at least another week.
soulman
Ridley may be a niftier receiver but I haven't seen that kind of downfield blocking since Marshall left. Wims value as a blocker and as another big target can't hurt. Miller's problem on Sunday may have been letting that fail on a TD catch bother him too much. FWIW he appears to be a high strung Alpha type personality who'll obsess at times and it will impact his focus and his play. It was a tough catch and if he makes it I'm willing to bet the rest of his game would have gone much better. Even ARob whose typically unflappable seemed bothered that he was the target on two picks the second of which should never have happened. Ninety nine times out of a hundred he comes down with that ball.
dll2000
Most or many people didn’t have Wims on the 53. And if he wasn’t on 53 there was little reason to keep him any longer as a prospect at this point. He hardly played last year. His career was looking to be over. Good for him. Good on coaches for keeping an open mind on a player in a new year.
G08
Proud of Wims, if I'm not mistaken I recall reading a coach say that he knows all 3 positions so he can sub in at a moment's notice.
