naptownskinsfan
I figured some of the bowl games might be on the chopping block this year because of travel, but I guess not. Quote The NCAA Division I Football Oversight Committee on Thursday recommended the removal of normal requirements that teams must meet in order to become bowl eligible. This would apply only to the 2020-21 bowl season. College football teams must complete the regular season with a record of .500 or better in order to be considered bowl eligible. The oversight committee is recommending that requirement be waived this season as scheduled have been shortened and some teams may be unable to play in the postseason amid the COVID-19 pandemic. A football team meeting the mandatory minimum Academic Progress Rate (APR) score will be the only determining factor in whether it is eligible for a bowl game this season, according to the committee's recommendations. The NCAA Division I Council will have the final as it needs to approve the recommendation next month. Not definitely a strict number of wins. I can't really see the logic behind this.
pf9
I am strongly against this, because I am for equal bowl opportunities for all eligible teams, which is not only seen in my demand that ND be eligible for the ACC slot in the Orange Bowl every year, but also my belief that it would be more wise for a bowl to give an at-large invite to a Group of 5 team with 7 or more wins rather than a 6-6 Power 5 team (in normal seasons), because Power 5 teams don't really need to appear in bowls to earn money, they get plenty of it from other sources, which can't be said of G5 teams. For perspective, the last eligible P5 team to not play in a bowl was 2018, when Boston College was a victim of this, but they had been invited to play in the First Responder Bowl, which ended up being canceled due to inclement weather. The last eligible P5 team to actually go uninvited to a bowl game was Notre Dame in 2009, though they chose to sit out bowl season because of the coaching change they made. Thus, Louisville and South Carolina in 2007 were the last eligible AQ teams (as it was then called) to seek out a bowl invite, but not get invited. pf9
https://www.espn.com/college-sports/story/_/id/30116895/ncaa-grants-extra-year-eligibility-all-winter-sport-athletes It's happening. Does the NCAA not care about the Group of Five football teams? They have feelings too, and one team, Texas State, was so affected by not being invited at 7-5 6 years ago that they have never had a winning season since.
