1st of Many 2021 Mock Offseasons

Jets fire Adam Gase mid season. Gregg Williams takes over as Interim HC and JBC takes over as OC for the rest of the 2020 season. This in turn saves Darnold's job.

We finish somewhere around the 3-13 range and we are drafting around 5. Seattle goes at least to the NFCCG, so our 1st and 3rd from them is late.

Jets hire Brian Daboll as our new HC. He has experience under Belichick and Saban. He has a good history with WRs, TEs and has made Josh Allen look good as a QB.

Cuts (notable)

Le'Veon Bell

Henry Anderson

Alex Lewis

GVR

Resign (notable)

Brian Poole

Marcus Maye

Quincy Wilson

Free Agency (after cuts and re-signings we have around 80-90 in cap space)

JuJu Smith-Schuster (WR): Pitt doesn't have the best cap situation. So they have to let JuJu walk. Sam helps recruit him here being they were teammates at USC. Gives us a proven option to start out our weapon reload. He's still only 23 which is crazy, so will be 24 when he hits FA.

Marlon Mack (RB): Injured but has talent. So he won't cost a ton. We are one of few teams that can guarantee him a decent amount of snaps that have money. Mack, Perine and a rookie will take over the backfield.

Pat Elflein (OG): Minnesota has a rough cap situation and will have to move on from guys. Elflein is one of those guys. He can play any of the 3 IOL spots.

Bud Dupree (Edge): Once again Pitt has to let guys go bc of a rough cap situation. And can't tie up a ton of cap in both Dupree and Watt down the road. We overpay... but get our edge we've all been wanting.

Kevin King (CB): A legit CB that we pay for. We have a lot of potential at CB, but no one really proven. King changes that and gives us a #1 CB.

NFL Draft

1. Ja'Marr Chase (WR/LSU): We're out on the QB race and decide to go after a star WR. We need WR help bad. A WR core of JuJu, Crowder, Chase and Mims is a great haul IMO. Chase reminds me of a Davante Adams type #1 WR.

1. (from SEA) Creed Humphrey (IOL/Oklahoma): JD continues to just help Darnold. An interior OL in some combo of McGovern, Eflein and Humphreys is great. Add Becton and Fant at OT and we have a complete OL.

2. Hamilcar Rashed Jr (Edge/Oregon State): An edge defender that doesn't have a weakness. Not a 1 trick pony and is only getting better. Dupree, Rashed and Zuniga can hopefully make our edge presence good again.

3. Chris Olave (WR/Ohio State): A talented WR that just always seems to get open. Does all the little things right. We need depth at WR and Olave is part of this WR haul.

3. (from SEA) Zamir White (RB/Georgia): Just helping the haul on offense here. Getting talent to help us. Mack, Perine and White is a good RB group.

4. Derion Kendrick (CB/Clemson): Just trying to make the secondary better, deeper and younger.

5. KJ Britt (LB/Auburn): We decided to move on from Williamson, so we need LB help. He's more stocky, when Cashman is more speed. So we have flexibility next to Mosley.

5. (from NYG) Victor Dimukeje (Edge/Duke): Can never have enough pass rushers.

6. Nick Eubanks (TE/Michigan): Not highly productive but has a good skill set for blocking and receiving. Depth at TE.

7. Brent Cimaglia (K/Tennessee): Mann and Cimaglia will give us one of the best young ST specialists in the NFL.

So for me in this we fix A LOT. We stay with Darnold and decide to actually help him via FA and Draft finally.

On Offense... An OL of Becton, Elflein, McGovern, Humphrey, Fant is good. And to revamp the WRs is huge. A WR group of Chase, JuJu, Crowder, Mims and Olave is good. RBs we get younger with Mack, Perine and White.

On defense to add a few edges in Dupree, Rashed and Dimukeje is huge. We've needed edges for over a decade. We also add a couple CBs in King and Kendrick to get younger and talented in the secondary.

For me this team can compete and we have very little to look at as holes after this.

I like it.  My only issue is Mack and Elflein.  Don't both get injured a lot?  I am now gun shy of "injury prone" players.  I may forego Mack and run with Perine and White.  Same with Elflein, maybe Clarke can man the other OG spot.  I may look at another FA CB, somebody able to play press/man.  I hate this zone crap we run, but I understand why we run it.

It’s never too early to put up a mock when we’re talking about the Jets. The season is over and we’re only 3 games into it.

Few comments:

Cuts: I wouldn’t cut Lewis and GVR. Lewis is descent as a starter. GVR’s contract is not bad and we can keep him as a backup. But I see what you did in the draft; so, it’s cool.

WR: Priority number 1. I like Juju. I’m also good with ARob, Godwin and Golladay. My personal favorite is Golladay. I think he brings a level of physicality that will fit well with the team. But Juju is the more realistic option.

1st pick: if we don’t go QB, than Chase is a great pick.

Great players don’t hit FA. Players who are injured but are good do sometimes. So that’s a risk we’d have to take. We have money so it has to be spent somewhere.

Detroit’s cap situation isn’t bad. So I see them resigning Golladay. Better players might hit FA this year and more trades will happen bc if cap. JD needs to hop on this. Pitt is in a bad situation cap wise. That’s why I have us getting 2 big FAs from them. Bc even with them gone they still have to shed a ton of cap. For me though I like that Darnold and JuJu have already played together. JuJu can play in the slot and outside. Crowder probably only has another year or so with us. And JuJu is crazy young still. So he’s worth investing in. Package that’s with adding 2 very talented WRs in the draft... I like the haul at WR.

This is a good point and probably the reasons he’s likely to be a priority FA for us. Add the fact that he’s also a tough player and he fits pretty well.

You stated great players don’t hit FA, yet you have us getting Dupree and JuJu. Also, this is unlike anything the NFL has seen with the lowered cap in 2021. Great players WILL hit FA.

Why does everyone forget that part?

Great players that teams don’t have cap issues will get resigned though. It will only be teams with cap issues that will HAVE TO let players walk

True. That is why I also mention going after players on teams in cap hell.  Offer pennies on the dollar. There are still teams next year that will also have a lot of cap room.

For sure. I’m not a big fan of doing trades in my mocks. But I’d love for JD to pursue that route. Send some mid rounders for established good young players. We have the cap to take on contracts. And the draft picks as well (2 3rds and 2 5ths).

Want no part of Elfien, he’s horrible. Would love Trey Smith or Creed there with our 2nd first rounder

I have us drafting Creed with our 2nd 1st. But in this mock... we need 2 OGs not just 1. So I have us getting Elflein in FA as well. Take the risk with him.

First off...what 3-5 games are we winning Bobby?! lol

Lol. Great point. I have watched all 3 Dolphin games and they are what I hoped we’d be, a young team that never gives up. Even if Fitz goes on an int spree, they actually have a potential stud in Tua, ready to step in. I seriously doubt we can beat them. The Broncos have been decimated with injuries and are probably our best chance for a win. At this point Arizona, Cleveland, LAC, LAR, KC, Seattle, LVR, NE, Buffalo are, IMO, better than us.In fact 5 of those teams (Seattle, LAR, Buffalo, NE and KC) will probably be among the top 8 teams at the end season. IMO, after tonight, Sam will have to start playing like Allen or Goft for us to get to 5 wins

As to the mock draft, if by some miracle we are drafting 4th or 5th, I like it. Chase, Olave and Mims along with Crowder and JUJu (or my preferences - Godwin, Golladay or Westbrook) have the potential to be a very good to excellent receiving group. You also addressed edge, OL and CB. Well done.
