Zac Taylor’s Culture and Future

Have we had a “good” OL since Richie Braham retired? Certainly it hasn’t been this bad. But we have had significant holes ever since.

They were good in 2015.  That was the last year.  Dalton only took 20 sacks that season (in 13 games).  21 the year before in 16 with mostly the same crew.  The only obvious weakness being Bodine.

That line with Braham though was legit.  No obvious holes there.

Here's my rant on Zac Taylor...

  • I'm thrilled with Taylor for the most part, and for me it comes down to expectations.  I knew going in that he wasn't 100% ready for the job, so there will be a good deal of learning as he goes.  I expected 2-3 rough years in the W/L department, and well that's exactly what's occurring.
  • In the last two drafts, we've gotten a promising LT (Jonah), QB (Burrow), and WR (Higgins).  The future looks bright for those 3 players, and for me that points to a solid offensive scheme.
  • The defense sucks but besides Jessie Bates, and WJIII to an extent we don't have the personnel.  Zimmer is having a rough time in Minnesota, Belichick's D isn't look so hot right now either.  I haven't seen anything that says we should keep Lou but I'm not in a rush to get rid of him until we add a couple of more pieces on defense at least, especially the DL.
  • Ultimately, what it comes down to is that I only care about offensive progress right now.  Defense I think just comes down to personnel/fundamentals.  Even when Marvin was here, the defense would look awful when Geno and/or Burfict were out of the lineup...

I'd be a lot happier if this whole Geno/Dunlap thing hadn't cropped up, and if Jim Turner wasn't still around.

It's only two things, but it's a big two things.

As much as we bemoan the Brown family for nepotism, the one time it actually made sense to hire family, they crapped the bed and let Callahan esc ape to Cleveland.

I'm not quite ready to give up, but that defense needs to improve.  Improving the pass rush would do alot for that. I feel like moving lawson back to pass rush specialist would be a good start.

I'm fine with Zac as a HC.  He seems like a fronmt line leader.  But he hasn't proven much as an actual coach.  therefore, surround him with quality coaches, especially at both OC and DC.  And for goodness sakes, get a real OL coach

Technically it is still family.  I think Jim Turner and Zac have a relation through marriage...

Organizational issue, and not something I put on Zac tbh.  A smart organization would have traded Dunlap in the offseason (like they should have done with AJG last offseason before the injury).  Instead of the Bengals wait for their assets to depreciate, get surprised when an older player gets hurt, and then trades them for next to nothing or just cuts them out right.  It's a stupid way to run a team...

I don't think his handling of the Dunlap/Geno has been good though.  Not trading them is not on him, but letting this get to the point of making media headlines is.

Also, it still seems like bad coaching to me to have those two on the bench while playing street FA's in critical situations.  Frankly i understand why they're mad, and that falls on Zac imo.

Geno situation is a lot of rumors at this point.  We know he's hurt, and can't play him a lot of snaps.  Zac seems to indicate he's on the same page with Geno there, so knows what the truth is since Geno doesn't talk.

As for Dunlap. His reduction in playing time happened after he couldn't produce on the field.  He got his opportunity as a full time DE, and wasn't doing well (in the run game or rushing the passer).  He's a slow starter but I don't blame the coaches for giving more reps to Lawson instead.  Of course then he went further down the depth chart after he refused to embrace his 3rd down pass rusher role.  Which honestly, I think would have been great for him but he was being stubborn.  It is what it is now, and I'm sure he'll ball out (at least initially) for the Seahawks...

And Lou Anoroumo or however you spell it. Would love to bring in a better DC.

I'm on the fence there, but don't have a strong opinion i guess.  I'd be fine with a replacement.
