The O-Line, Are they the real issue?

Apparently Garcia looks like franchise player material from what (random pats blog writer) said about him in camp, but how he can tell, I don't know.

Do we draft LT with our first pick next year? I always advocate taking OLers in draft. Get our next Taylor Lewan, if we can.

How many practices did Garcia even participate in before suffering his mysterious non-football related injury?

Putting any faith in him is a mistake at this point.

Drafting a LT early makes sense although it means another year without rebuilding the front 7 and it forces them to keep Solder for another year or two

I think at least a part of it is we're seeing more long developing plays and more shots down the field with Cooks, and Hogan.

Hogan really can't be used in the short game. His stride is so long, he can only really do downfield stuff. Cooks is a burner, who can take the top off a defense. It makes perfect sense to play this way, but the OL HAS to step up. It needs to.

Hogan can be used on short/intermediate routes - just not ones that require instant separation.

No reason Cooks can't be used more in the short game.

The Pats OL isn't a great pass blocking unit so expecting them to get much better is unrealistic. Solder needs to rebound but the other 3 guys are who they are.

We can expect them to return to 2016 levels can't we? Even with the extra .4 seconds Tom is holding on to the ball, they look disproportionately worse than a season ago. Haven't got stats to back that up, but just from what I can see.

The ends look hobbled though. That will be a factor.

The interior line isn't a particularly good pass blocking unit.

The longer pass plays are exposing them. I'm not convinced that the interior is any worse than last year. They're being asked to hold their blocks longer.

Cannon has been ok, hobbled 2 weeks ago but better vs Tampa. Solder is having issues.

To top it off, we don't have a particularly strong run blocking crew.  Shaq's solid but inconsistent, Cannon hobbled, Andrews isn't particularly strong,  and Solder is struggling which is giving Thuney problems too.

We have a bunch of guys that are supposed work well together because they have technique and good teamwork, but none of that is coming together, and the lack of athleticism is really hurting our ability to hold blocks longer.  Andrews inevitably gets overwhelmed from lack of strength, Thuney just isn't that agile, and Solder isn't holding his initial blocks.

Shaq and Cannon are doing ok but, Solder needs to step it up to get Thuney a little more consistent and Andrews just needs to figure something out because his technique is only going to get him so far.

At least BB is well aware of this because we can probably count the number of left side running plays we've done on two hands.

Garcia's a strong guy but, think he had footwork and/or technique issues.  The guy is 100% a project player that relies on athleticism.  Hope we draft a LT early or Solder regains his old form

Even on the quick throws, DEs are getting into the backfield very quickly. The strategy seems to be to have Solder and Cannon allow them to get outside but push them downfield so that Brady can step up, but the interior OL isn't protecting well enough or long enough to really allow that to happen. They're getting pushed back and the pocket's getting shrunk.

Like others have said, Allen's pass pro has left plenty to be desired.

This seems like a good place to drop this given how many times he's been hit.  Are we flirting with disaster with the line the way it is and the longer developing routes?

I mean, we still have the number 1 offense (or 2). But, we cannot keep putting Brady in these situations, because it will blow up in our faces one day - then it's on to Garoppolo and uncertainty.

  • 2 weeks later...

Vs Atlanta

OL.png

Tom Brady was sacked twice in this one but one came on a free run to the quarterback after a blitz went unaccounted for and the other was a Vic Beasley sack where Falcons DE Adrian Clayborn forced Brady to step up in the pocket and into Beasley.

In all, Tom Brady was pressured on just 25% of his dropbacks on Sunday night, and left tackle Nate Solder was the only Patriots offensive lineman to give up multiple pressures.

Solder continues to struggle at left tackle. His 25 total pressures allowed on the season is tied for the sixth-most among all offensive tackles.

The Patriots offensive line also deserves credit for the season-high 162 yards accumulated on the ground (4.5 yards/carry), and appears to have found a rhythm over the last few weeks.
