Mock Offseason

Here's a mock offseason for fun.

Estimated 2021 cap space:

https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/washington-football-team/cap/2021/

Approximately $50.9 mil

Washington pending FAs:

https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/washington-football-team/yearly/cap/

QB Kyle Allen - ERFA - tendered - estimated $800k - Allen should still be cheap next year.

WR Dontrelle Inman - UFA - not retained - He will be 32 next year, seems like a stopgap solution this year.

WR Cam Sims - ERFA - tendered - estimated $650k - He's still young with upside.

WR Robert Foster - RFA - not tendered - I don't know who this guy is.

WR Tony Brown - ERFA - not tendered - I don't know who this guy is either.

TE Jeremy Sprinkle - UFA - not retained - He's at best a 3rd TE and won't be worth the expense.

OG Brandon Scherff – UFA – Resigned, 5 year deal, $70 mil total, $33 mil guaranteed (estimated year 1 cap cost $10 mil) – So I debated just franchise tagging Scherff, and I definitely think that’s a possibility, but decided against it.  Here’s why.  I estimated the franchise tag to cost approximately $15.52 mil (took 2020’s tag amount for OL and increased 5%).  That’s nearly half the guaranteed money it should take to resign him.  Also, if we frontload the guaranteed money ($33 mil), it will pretty much be completely gone after Year 3.

Comps for contract:

https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/contracts/guard/

OC Chase Roullier – UFA – not retained – this is a harder decision than Scherff imo.  What do you do with an average starting Center?  The best comp I could find for him is the deal Connor McGovern signed with the Jets.  He’s a solid 26 year old Center.

https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/contracts/sort-value/center/limit-100/

3-year deal with total money around $27 mil, he’d count about $9 mil against our cap Year 1.  That sounds expensive for what Roullier brings to the table IMO.  I expect this is why we drafted Keith Ismael in this previous draft.  I think we should let Roullier walk in free agency.

OT David Sharpe – UFA – not retained – we just traded for this guy, but he has an expiring deal and I expect he will cost something around what Cornelius Lucas got from us this year (around $2 mil per year).  We also still have Lucas and Christian under contract for next year, and I expect we target a LT in the draft.  There just isn’t a roster spot for this guy at that price.

OG Michael Liedtke – RFA – not tendered – I don’t know who this guy is.

DE Ryan Kerrigan – UFA – 2 year extension, $14 mil total contract, $6.5 mil guaranteed, $6.5 mil year 1 cap cost – you can call this being sentimental with this deal, but I actually think this is a good football decision. He’s playing great coming off the bench and fits in great with the rest of our Dline.  I based this contract off of the deal Everson Griffin got from the Cowboys (1 year, $6 mil deal), but added a little more money because Kerrigan is better.  All of the guaranteed money would be paid in Year 1 so we could cut him if his play deteriorates.  He’d also have a very reasonable (and highly tradeable) Year 2 contract worth only $7.5 mil of non-guaranteed money. Maybe he’d get offered more on the open market?  But he will be 33 years old at the start of next season so I think this is a fair offer.

DE Ryan Anderson – UFA – not retained – with Young, Sweat and Kerrigan in the fold Anderson is at best our 4th DE.  He’s not worth retaining for that role.  We can draft a 4th DE (and actually we already did already with James Smith-Williams).

LB Thomas Davis – UFA – not retained – old.

LB Kevin Pierre-Lewis – UFA – not retained – I think we can upgrade this position.

LB Reuben Foster – UFA – not retained – lets just admit he’s never playing football again and move on.

LB Nate Orchard – UFA – not retained – he doesn’t make an impact.

LB Jared Norris – UFA – not retained – I don’t know who this is.

CB Ronald Darby – UFA – 3 year extension, $21 mil total, $13 mil guaranteed, $6.5 mil year 1 cap cost – Darby has been serviceable and he’ll be just 27 years old next year. This is a reasonable 3 year extension for a starting CB, he’s only making $3 mil this year so it’s a great extension for him.  Comparable contract I used was Patriots CB Jonathan Jones.

CB Fabian Moreau – UFA – 2 year extension, $5 mil total, $2.5 mil guaranteed, $2.5 mil year 1 cap cost – This extension is debatable.  If he gets any interest in FA from other teams I would expect us to let him walk.  I just basically took what he’s making now and added 2 years to it.

CB Danny Johnson – RFA – tendered no compensation – estimated contract $850k – he’s cheap, he returns kicks.

S Jeremy Reaves – ERFA – no offer – I don’t expect him to do much.

K Dustin Hopkins – UFA – 1 year extension, $3.5 mil – he’s struggled this year but whatever.  He’s a kicker.

LS Nick Sundberg – UFA – 3 year extension, $4.5 mil, $1.5 mil year 1 cap cost – slight pay raise for the LS.

CUTS

Not a lot of cap remaining.  Need to make some cuts.

CUT – QB Alex Smith - $14.7 mil cap savings – glad to see he’s healthy but its time to move on.

CUT – HB Peyton Barber - $1.34 mil cap savings – why do we have so many RBs?

Considered – SS Landon Collins – He’s pay an absurd amount of money for what little he brings to the table.  Still, it would cost us $1.6 mil, in addition to his $17.2 mil cap hold next year, so if we’re going to cut him it would have to be in 2022 to make sense.

I don’t see any other obvious cuts.  I considered Caleb Brantley (estimated 920k savings) and Troy Apke ($1.1 mil savings) but I figure we might as well bring both of them in for camp to compete.

TRADE

I’m going to assume we can’t move Dwayne Haskins before the deadline this year and we dump him in the offseason.  I’ll project that we trade him to the Colts for a 4th round pick and the rights to TE Mo Allie Cox, and that carries an additional 320k cap hit.  Mo Allie Cox will be extended.

Mo Allie Cox signs a 3 year deal, totaling $10.5 mil, year 1 cap cost is $3.0 mil.

CAP REMAINING

That’s going to leave us with an estimated $29.72 mil in cap space heading into free agency.  However, after draft picks our practical cap space for free agents is estimated at only $19.68 mil.

Draft Pick Salaries

Round 1 - 10 $3.76
Round 2 - 42 $1.47
Round 3 - 74 $0.92
Round 3 - 84 $0.83
Round 4 - 116 $0.84
Round 4 - 131 $0.82
Round 5 - 155 $0.73
Round 7 - 224 $0.67
Total $10.04

https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/draft/I calculated our draft pick salaries based off of last year’s salaries with a 5% escalation on all picks.

That is not a lot of money for FA.  A lot of this space we will need to extend our own players the following year.

2021 Cap Space $50.90
Trade
QB Dwayne Haskins -$0.32
Re-Signings
QB Kyle Allen -$0.80
WR Cam Sims -$0.65
OG Brandon Scherff -$10.00
DE Ryan Kerrigan -$6.50
CB Ronald Darby -$6.50
CB Fabian Moreau -$2.50
CB Danny Johnson -$0.85
K Dustin Hopkins -$3.50
LS Nick Sundberg -$1.50
TE Mo Allie Cox -$3.00
Cap Subtotal $14.78
Cuts
QB Alex Smith $13.60
HB Peyton Barber $1.34
Cap Remaining $29.72
Draft Picks -$10.04
Practical Cap Space $19.68

FREE AGENCY

WR Curtis Samuel – 3 year deal, $19.5 mil total, $10 mil guaranteed, $6 mil year 1 cap cost – He’s really young for a UFA at 25 years old, a former 2nd round pick, and played for Ron Rivera before.  He’s never had huge production, but he hasn’t been terrible either.  Plus he’s had a lot of different starting QBs during that time.

OLB Haason Reddick – 3 year deal, $18 mil total, $8 mil guaranteed, $5.5 mil year 1 cap cost – regarded as a bust, Reddick has bust out this year after moving to OLB.  He’s never been a good fit in the 3-4, and I think would benefit tremendously by playing in a 4-3 alignment.  He gives us some pass rush ability from the linebacker spot we really don’t have right now.

That’s pretty much it.  I spent most of the cap retaining our own guys.  The positions we have the biggest need (WR, OC, TE, S) I don’t really like a lot of the free agent options.  This would leave us with around $8 mil in cap space heading into the season.

Practical Cap Space $19.68
Curtis Samuel -$6.00
Haason Reddick -$5.50
Final Cap Space $8.18

DRAFT

I’m going to utilize this 7 round mock draft:

https://www.draftsite.com/nfl/mock-draft/2021/

If a player is not available at our projected pick per that mock I will assume they are off of the board.

Round 1 – Pick 10 – OT Alex Leatherwood, Alabama – we love our first round Alabama players.  He steps in and starts at LT right away.

Round 2 – Pick 42 – TE Pat Freiermuth, Penn State – An all around talent with size who can block and catch.

Round 3 – Pick 74 – S Donovan Stiner, Florida – led the Gators with 4 INTs last year.  Helped backup CJ Henderson and get him drafted so highly.

Round 3 (via 49ers) – Pick 84 – QB Sam Ehlinger, Texas – Is he any good?  Idk.  He’s a QB.  Bring him in and let him compete.

Round 4 – Pick 116 – OC Jimmy Morrissey, Penn St – 4 year starter in a major conference.  2 time All ACC.

Round 4 – Pick 131 (via Colts) – CB Trey Dean III, Florida – We seem to always draft teammates each year, here I project Gators.  He’s 6’3” and rangy.

Round 5 – Pick 155 – LB Merlin Robertson, Arizona St – Kiper has this guy ranked really high but this mock draft doesn’t seem to think much of him.  He can play multiple linebacker positions and can push Bostic for the starting role.

Round 7 – Pick 224 – K Jet Toner, Stanford – Some competition for Hopkins since he’s struggled this year.  Besides the guy’s name is Jet Toner.  I mean come on.

Here’s the final roster:

Washington Whatevers 2021 Roster

Kyle Allen Antonio Gibson   Pat Freiermuth Terry McLaurin

Fantastic job MKnight.

But if Ehlinger were a UDFA. I might consider giving him a call. If you remember Trace McSorley from PSU. Hes kinda like him, and not any better.

Outside the qb spot (which cant be helped no matter what at this point). The team looks to be much improved with your take.

Hassan Reddick? Not so sure I like giving him such a big contract.

Not retaining KPL & Roullier doesn’t make much sense to me considering AT WORST they’ve been average starters this year.

Some of these guys will just be retained with a chance to make the team IMO in cheap deals w/ no guaranteed $, like Reuben Foster, Jared Norris, Jeremy Reaves, Nate Orchard and Ryan Anderson.

Maybe others beat them out but I think some of these guys - if not all of them - will be given a chance to make the team.

I don't hate this. It jives with more of a realistic, long-term rebuild. Roster from top to bottom is much more solid, but the glaring QB room will be a problem. This is a 7-9/8-8 team at best, but has a great foundation to be a great team if a franchise QB comes along.

Ya that’s the point.  Build a good roster that a future QB can strive with.

Of all the needs this team has?

#2 WR is it's biggest, imo.

Sure, LT is a need. But even average play from that spot can still help a team find success.

TE? It's a luxury to have a good one, but you don't need a good one. An average one is good enough, if your QB can get him the ball. Case in point? The situation we're currently in.

But Scary Terry gets no help. At all...

We don't even have a moderately decent #2. Yes, Cam sims doesn't suck, but at best he's a #3. Imo, he's more of a #4 or 5 guy.

We MUST get a #2 wr, if we're going to be able to take down the good teams.

And when I say a #2 wr? I'm really saying...

Another #1 wr.

A guy on par with Scary Terry.

Because 2 really good WR's, opens the field up for the whole offense.

Look at the Falcons for example. They don't win much,  cause they can't stop anybody.

They're WR's? Julio Jones & Calvin Ridley.

The Cardinals are awesome. You know why? Yes, their Defense is pretty darn good.

But the real reason? You can't stop them...this is their WR core

DeAndre Hopkins , Larry Fitzgerald, Christian Kirk, Andy Isabella, Hakeem Butler

Best group in football, imo.

Look at Seattle...

DK metcalf and Tyler Locket

Chiefs...?T.  Hill, Sammy Watkins, & Mecole Hardmen

I could go on and on and on...

Whether we draft, sign FA, or make a trade?

We won't improve as a team, unless we find our #2 Wr.

It's just that simple.

I was hoping we would make a trade before the deadline for a true stud...

Then draft another in the 3rd or 4th Rd.

But who knows what the hell we're doing.

Nice work.

I think we need to improve more.  We need a real free safety and a high level pass catcher.  I would also like to see another olineman, either a guard or real center.

Signings like Cox and Samuel are reminiscent of the Bruce Allen days where we get a handful of stacy mcgees and think they add up to one elite player.  I would rather have one elite player.   Or just keep Sprinkle and Inman.

I do like Reddick.

Criminal to keep Hopkins at this point.

I also would just extend Jonathan Allen rather then let him play on option.  We need to start locking the dline guys in rather than put it off where we need to do multiples in an offseason.

I’ll edit this as I finish your offseason but the fact you retained Kerrigan is the reason I seriously enjoy your posts!!! You have said to trade him and now I think you see the value in having a leader even at a reduced role and that’s the type of open minded attitude we need to hope our FO is going to use with this franchise because I think coming into the season they maybe were planning on featuring Ryan to get a pick come Trade deadline. But I think he has actually been more effective with limited snaps then anyone thought he maybe even could be including me who’s pounded to keep him. Personally I want him but I also want Ryan to make the decision moving forward that’s best for him. Because he deserves a shot at a winner. So this would be a mutual thing if I was our FO if he wants a chance I’d work a trade for him. If not then he’d finish his career here on a deal both team and player can be happy with.

To the rest of the offseason maybe I change a selections name but that’s being picky love those players and it’s hard to change a name after pick 20 so many what ifs to debate projected avalibilty with draft prospects range. Love it man Samuel fits the YAC tribe this offense seems to be centered around and the RR familiarity is great. Loved Riddick coming out would love Del Rio to get their hands on that guy and coach him up maybe even maximize his potential which is sky high. Also he and Matt and Wright I love the Temple tough movement they are a joy to scout and watch on saturdays. Great work man the financial breakdowns you really put the time and thought into this love it!!! I’m also sneaky high on the idea of Ehlinger. Idky call it a hunch I just really have been doing extra on him because man he has tools there’s just something missing in Texas I like him though so it’s crazy you grabbed him I am really intriged.

We need a real free safety and a high level pass catcher.

I took a stab at a Safety in the 3rd.

Signings like Cox and Samuel are reminiscent of the Bruce Allen days where we get a handful of stacy mcgees and think they add up to one elite player.  I would rather have one elite player.   Or just keep Sprinkle and Inman.

We don't have as much cap space as people think.  Now that can change with restructures,  but I didn't do any of those.  I would imagine the biggest candidate for a restructure would be Landon Collins because his cap hold is huge.  I actually think Mo Allie Cox and Curtis Samuel are better signings than Stacey McGee.  Both are young with upside.  You state you want to add an elite player, those rarely hit free agency.  Take a look at this upcoming FA class, it isn't very good.

Nice work.

I think we need to improve more.  We need a real free safety and a high level pass catcher.  I would also like to see another olineman, either a guard or real center.

I do like Reddick.

Criminal to keep Hopkins at this point.

I also would just extend Jonathan Allen rather then let him play on option.  We need to start locking the dline guys in rather than put it off where we need to do multiples in an offseason.

Donovan Stinner is a real FS, Mknight’s 3rd round pick.

I tend to agree with your points except that if we can’t get an good to elite TE/#2 WR we should just keep Inman & Sprinkle. I think we definitely need an upgrade at #2 WR & TE no matter what, even if it’s just getting an average all around TE like a Jacob Hollister and an average #2 WR. We should’ve done that last March too. Thomas is fine, he’s just not a starting TE.

Thanks I appreciate the feedback.  I had the day off yesterday but had to watch my son all day inside because it was pouring.  Figured I'd waste time by doing a detailed mock.
