Jets Midseason Mock Offseason

Jets fire Adam Gase on Black Monday. Should be fired already... but I think they want to guarantee a top draft pick at this point.

Jets Hire Matt Campbell at their new HC. I think this is a good match. He has a history of building up teams that weren't good when he got them. He has an OL background that I think JD will like. We had interest in him a couple years ago, but I don't think he was ready for that big move yet. I think he is now.

Free Agency (after cuts and re-signings we have around 90mill in cap space)

JuJu Smith-Schuster (WR): Pitt doesn't have the best cap situation. So they have to let JuJu walk (plus Claypool is a stud). He's still only 23 which is crazy, so will be 24 when he hits FA. Pay the man and get a great young slot WR.

Marlon Mack (RB): Injured but has talent. So he won't cost a ton. We are one of few teams that can guarantee him a decent amount of snaps that have money. Mack, Perine and a rookie will take over the backfield.

Joe Thuney (OG): I think JD wanted him bad this last offseason, but he got tagged. He won't get tagged this next year and I think we get him. This makes the left side of our OL great.

Bud Dupree (Edge): Once again Pitt has to let guys go bc of a rough cap situation. They can't tie up a ton of cap in both Dupree and Watt down the road. We overpay... but get our edge we've all been wanting.

Kevin King (CB): A legit CB that we pay for. We have a lot of potential at CB, but no one really proven. King changes that and gives us a good outside CB.

Corey Davis (WR): Tenn didnt pick up his 5th year option and he will be a FA. I think he's still a very good WR. He can start on the outside for us and is still young.

Trade

After securing the #1 pick we trade Darnold to Washington for their 2nd Rounder.

Crowder to someone for a 5th Rounder. Once we secure JuJu, he's not needed anymore in us switching this franchise over. While I like Crowder as a player... be decide to move on after knowing we have his replacement who's 4 years younger.

NFL Draft

1. Trevor Lawrence (QB/Clemson) Best QB prospect since Luck. Not very man holes in his game and he immediately is who we rely on to make this franchise a winner. Just this time around we give our QB talent around him.

1. (from SEA) Wyatt Davis (OG/Ohio State)  JD continues to just help TLaw. An interior OL in some combo of Thuney, McGovern, Davis is great. Add Becton and Fant/Edoga at OT and we have a complete OL.

2. Quincy Roche (Edge/Miami) An edge defender that doesn't have a weakness. Not a 1 trick pony and is only getting better. Dupree, Roche, Huff and Zuniga can hopefully make our edge presence good again.

2: (from WAS) Tyson Campbell (CB/Georgia) We need CB help still and Campbell is a big physical CB. Great outside CB that can tackle as well.

3. Chuba Hubbard (RB/Oklahoma State) Just helping the haul on offense here. Getting talent to help us. Mack, Perine and Hubbard is a good RB group. And each offer something different. Hubbard can fly.

3. (from SEA) Nick Eubanks (TE/Michigan) Receiving TE that isn't the best blocker, so he's a work in progress. But with Herndon regressing, we have to try and get someone in there at TE.

4. Dazz Newsome (WR/UNC) Depth at WR. Surely JD realized how much depth is now needed at this spot.

5. Amari Gainer (LB/Florida State) A do it all LB. Can actually line up all over the place as a LB, Pass rusher and even S at times. A jack of all trades weapon for us.

5. (from NYG) Leon O'Neal Jr (SS/Texas A&M) Good do it all S. Can play both FS and SS, but is better at SS. Great tackler who plays with passion.

5. (from Crowder trade) Abraham Lucas (OT/Washington State) Large RT that needs work but we have a FO with OL pedigree and will nurture these young OLineman.

6. Khyiris Tonga (DL/BYU) Big interior DLineman that moves great for his size.

7. Brent Cimaglia (K/Tennessee): Mann and Cimaglia will give us one of the best young ST specialists in the NFL.

So for me in this we fix A LOT. We totally change the look of the offense. Pretty much with 2/3 of it being new. And add a lot of nice new young pieces on defense as well.

On Offense... An OL of Becton, Thuney, McGovern, Davis, Fant/Edoga is very good. And to revamp the WRs is huge. A WR group of JuJu, Mims, Davis, Newsome, Doctson and Smith is very good and young.. RBs we get younger with Mack, Perine and Hubbard.

On defense to add a couple edges in Dupree and Roche is huge. We've needed edges for over a decade. We also add a couple CBs in King and Campbell to sure up our outside WR group. And we have Hall who I think might come on late this year as well.

For me this team can compete and it's a step in the right direction for this team.

Love all I've heard of Matt Campbell.

Would love to get Thuney and hope that we have one side of the line sorted for a while.

I'm a little unsure about JuJu because his production has been cratering in the last couple of years. I know that just about anything's an upgrade for us, but honestly if he just takes Crowder's spot, I'd rather keep Crowder. I do have irrational love for Crowder though, as just about the only competent player we have right now.

Mack and Davis would be decent options that wouldn't cost too much.

Would love to get guys like King and Dupree but they seem like the kinds of guys we'd lose out on in FA by being seen as such a garbage team right now.

I think in reality we'll accomplish less than this in this offseason, but it'll be an interesting one. If we get a new QB at #1, add a good piece to the OL, add a talented WR (draft or FA) and add one impact defender (an edge rusher after all this time would be great), that'll be a big step in the right direction.

I love it.  If I made a mock it would look like this.  I may think of WR instead of Davis depending on who is available, but I think the top WR will be gone including Olave so Davis would be awesome.  Doubt he is there for us though as he is considered the top iOL in the draft.  I also have a strong feeling JD would trade down to acquire more draft picks.

I like Roche but his size concerns me.  I would not hesitate to draft him at 33 and I would instruct our new S&C coach to bulk him up properly.

Is Cimaglia good enough to warrant a 7th?  I am asking because I don't know.  Fickens is not too bad and Castillo kicked a 55 yarder yesterday.  If he does indeed warrant the pick, I love the idea of Mann and Cimaglia.  We could even come up with a cool moniker for the duo like Managlia.

I love the Mack acquisition.  I kind of forgot about him.  Not a fan of Davis but Rome wasn't built in a day.  Can JuJu play the Z spot?  If so, keep Crowder and line JuJu at flanker.  I also would not mind seeing Berrios starting in the slot, but he really is best as a WR4.  All in all, I would rather try and get an upgrade on Davis via FA or trade or select a WR in the 1st/2nd.  But I am really nitpicking here.

Good job, Bobby and I must admit I am a little surprised at you addressing D with both #2's.  Well played, sir.

I like it but I just don't see the Jets signing that many good FA. It just seems to me that most FA don't want to come here even of we over pay. Chad Greenway pulled out and we had to WAY over pay for Bell. I do think we need the number 1 pick really bad. Having Trevor Lawrence is a game changer because I NEVER get excited about a QB since Luck. I think T Law is better than Luck as a prospect too. I put T Law with only Elway as the best QB's to come out of college.

I would also like to see a decent TE in FA.  There will be several good, young TE's available:  Jonnu Smith, Tonyan, Henry, Everett.  The Jets should get be able to get one of them.  Cut Herndon and save another $1M and let Brown walk.  Roll with FA, day 2 or 3 draft pick, Griffin and Wesco.

Most teams are in cap problems and cant even resign their own players. Nevermind make a splash in FA. We are 1 of a handful of teams that can make big signings and several of them. It won't be a typical year of competing with countless teams for players. Bc 1/2 the league is out on them already bc of cap.

I'd totally be ok with that. Herndon has shown he isn't it. And a starter needs to be brought in. Haven't quit on him yet. But he doesn't need to be starting at this stage. He has to earn snaps now.

Optimistically... hopefully a new HC and OC can get the most out of him.

Can't complain at all, probably the best way to hit all of our needs.  If we grab Thuney I'd prefer to grab another WR, but JuJu, Davis and Mims is a good start.  I hope we can hit EDGE in FA and early in the draft too.  A Overall.

I think Mims and Davis on the outside is a good young duo with big bodies. And to have a great slot guy like JuJu really rounds out a good group. I think it's about having young guys to grow with TLaw in this. The ages of those 3 WRs to start next season are... Mims (23), Davis (26), JuJu (24). And all would be here for at least 2-3 years. Building a rapport with his group of WRs.

One player you have on your list was Bud Dupree, I can't remember what game I saw him play but he was terrific. I got that Sunday ticket and I see so many games they all run together.

I hope your right but it seems that most teams move money around all the time and collect most of their good players back. This will be a strange year but I just find it hard to believe that the steelers and Bud would part ways. I think even Corey Davis resigns with Tenn. These guys will take a pay cut to stay on top. Most teams don't let a guy walk in their prime or just reaching their prime. I hope your right but I just don't see it happening.

There is certainly some voodoo that goes on for teams to retain players that are tight against the cap.  But just looking at OTC, the only players Pitt can cut and have any savings vs. dead money is TJ Watt and Eric Ebron.  The rest would leave too much dead money or have a negative cap hit.  Pitt is already $29M in the hole next year without Dupree.  That is a lot of voodoo to do for them to get into the black AND resign an edge worth $15M plus.

I am sure the NFL will do something to help teams far in the red which would be unfair to teams that planned for this and operated intelligently like JD and the Jets.  It could get ugly.

I think the NFL will have their hands tied when it comes to teams in cap issues. Can't not make the playing field equal. Meaning you can't make a team that's 20 mill over the cap just magically under the cap bc of Covid. The teams have to adjust for at least a season. Does it suck for them? Of course. But that's the hand all 32 teams were dealt. Just some teams can handle it better than others.
