PORTLAND

Gameplan:

Offense: Caff is back……..injured! Jerrick McKinnon at least has a somewhat similar skill set so we can still use the same identity on offense with McKinnon as a RB who we can also split out wide as a WR and use short quick passing game formations. Davante Adams will be tough to stop the way he is playing right now even though NO has a strong CB room. They will have to give extra attention to him to slow down Adams. Meanwhile that would leave Fulgham (aka Randy Moss mixed with Jerry Rice), Mike Williams and Mark Andrews with one on one matchups. With all the attention my outside WR’s and TE’s will command it will be really difficult  to try and cover McKinnon out of the backfield. I think no matter who New Orleans tries to take away, someone will be in a match up to be open, decisively and quickly for Kirk Cousins to easily deal a pass to.

We can also have a 2 RB package with Gus Edwards and McKinnon and flex McKinnon as a WR.

Defense:

4-3 base.

Marcus Peters vs DeAndre Hopkins: Peters will shadow him and I think show him down significantly.

Jamie Collins spies Josh Allen: For this game we stay in 4-3 and spy Allen  with a good sideline to sideline LB in Collins. He can limit Allen’’s impact as a runner.

Bracket Michel Thomas: In obvious passing situations, I would take Martinez off the field and put in Justin Blackmon who is having an amazing rookie season. I’d use a CB  low and Blackmon high to take away Thomas

Front 7 should slow down Melvin Gordon: The strength of my d-line and LB is run defense.

Bud Dupree vs Taylor Decker: Dupree can win vs Decker consistently and then New Orleans will have to give more help to Decker

Rotating opposite DE to keep the offensive line gassed: With so much attention being need to be paid to helping stop Dupree, Portland quietly has a good 3 man rotation in John Simon, Tyvus Bowser and Tyquan Lewis to give different types of rushers to throw at the otherside of the line. If NO commits to stopping Dupree the other side will get their pressure and sacks especially late in the game when they will be fresher

NEW ORLEANS

Offense:

1RB-4WR Base (60% Pass – 40% Run):

This week we’re opting for a pass heavier approach as David Johnson has been ruled out while Jonah Williams potentially returns at RT to bolster out pass-blocking. With that said, even should Williams be ruled out, we’re comfortable going pass happy with Jawaan Taylor given the weakness of Portland’s defensive front.

While we’ve listed a 4WR base, we’ll generally run a number of different personnel packages including 3WR-1TE, 2WR-2TE and 2WR-1TE-2RB sets.

In 1TE sets we’ll largely go with Higbee, while the 2TE sets will feature a mix of Gesicki, Higbee and Boyle depending on down and distance. The 2 RB sets will often feature DJ Moore lining up in the backfield, but will generally be a mix of the specialist RBs.

Passing Game:

In terms of the passing game, we’re going to keep it pretty simple and just utilise our receivers and other pass-catchers in line with their strengths. Allen’s job will be to identify which receiver is in single coverage and toss it to them. Of our top two WRs, Hopkins will be our do it all receiver, running a full route tree while Thomas will largely work underneath on slants, hitch, crossing and out routes. Parker we expect to draw single coverage quite often and because of that we’re going to be happy to send him deep more often than not and have Allen toss it up to him in 1 on 1 situations. Moore will ordinarily line up in the slot but also motion quite often, being lined up on the outside or in the backfield with the goal of getting the ball in his hands and letting him do his work after the catch. In addition to this, we’ll have Moore go deep using his 4.4 speed to mix things up and try and take advantage of a Portland defense which may creep up to prevent the short passing & running game.

RPO, Play Action & Allen running/throwing outside the pocket:

We suspect Portland will come out with a standard base 4-3, largely man look. Therefore we incorporate play action and option plays to get Allen outside of the pocket and either throwing on the run or scrambling himself to pick up yards. We’ll do this in all our formations as we’re confident that all our receiving options will be able to find space given Allen will have extra time to avoid the rush and defenders won’t be able to stick with our players. If Portland opt to double Hopkins and Thomas, then Allen will simply run more often or look for the running back/TE to dump it off if there’s a spy as there’ll be a numbers mismatch somewhere.

Running Game:

The running game will feature our usual heavy rotation, with Hines being preferred for 3rd down, Gordon at the goal-line and Moss and Singletary chipping in occasionally. As alluded to above, Allen will get a few carries as well both out of option situations or scrambling on broken down passing plays.

We’ll continue to sprinkle in the occasional Roman inspired look from our 2 TE sets, or 2TE-2RB sets with Moore motioning into the backfield with Allen being given the option to keep, toss, or throw it to one of the TEs who peels off.

Defense:

As Portland has started a guard no longer on their roster for some weeks now and they’ve also lost McCaffrey and Montgomery for the week, we know that stopping them will essentially come down to stopping the passing game. We can’t make any mistakes and let Kirk beat us. Although Kirk isn’t a top QB without a strong running game supporting him, the talent which Portland possesses in their receiving group is immense.

Our defensive line will rotate on occasion, with the starters expected to play the majority of the snaps though Vernon will play earlier downs in place of Houston or Allen frequently, while Dre’Mont Jones will substitute in for Covington on every likely passing down.

Winovich will see snaps as a pass-rushing specialist, in particular when we plan to send 5 rushers or are blitzing while Agim will see around 20-25% of the snaps largely spelling Simmons and Covington as necessary alongside Jones.

Our plan is to blitz quite often and even bring 5 rushers on a few occasions as we know that Kirk has no escapability and with struggling running game, will be in 2nd or 3rd and long situations and requiring time to find first downs.

Cover 2 Man:

We’re going to go with a cover 2 man defense, with the following coverage assignments:

Gilmore (or Bouye) – Williams
Bradberry – Fulgham
JC Jackson (bracket w/Kareem Jackson) – Adams
Johnson – Running Back
Oluokun – Andrews

With Byard as the deep safety.

Portland bracketing the receiver just running short routes will open up a lot more of the New Orleans passing game. Staying in a 4-3 no matter what apparently except to bracket Thomas against a 4 wide set that is going pass heavy is going to doom Portland here.

Piggy backing off this I think Portland is able to do some things on offense however that 4-3 is going to doom them on defense.

35-21 NOLA
