Doug Free: Anybody who allowed themselves for a second to think that this team isn't anything other than the same old Cowboys of the last decade. The QB plays his butt off. The offense hums along and overall puts up a winning effort. But every single time the defense has to be relied on in any situation that matters, they completely fold. There are no quirky phrases or sayings to illustrate just how inept and subpar the defense is when they're needed. If they need to make one stop and get the ball back to the offense, they can't. If they need to at least hold the opposition to a field goal during a 1-minute drill, they give up touchdowns with no resistance. If they find themselves in a good situation like 3rd and long with favorable field position, they give up a chunk passing play, or commit sloppy penalties to extend opposing drives - which almost always end up in a score. This is the same old Cowboys and shame on anyone who thought this might be different. For years this organization has cut corners on the defensive side of the ball in favor of sexy, splashy moves that make SportsCenter and spark buzz nationally. But a "Romo-friendly" offense can't make a stop in crunch time of the playoffs. And the world's greatest offensive line can't sack the opposing quarterback. Nor can suspended pass rushers just come right back onto the field without missing a beat to play a complete 60 minute football game. A 90 year old defensive line coach stuck in 1990s defensive schemes cannot keep up with the ever-changing dynamic offenses of this decade. But yet here we are. A big game against a big opponent. The offense plays well enough to win on the back of a gutsy effort by a dynamic Quarterback. But the defense can't put up a semblance of resistance and gives up over 10 yards per play in 78 seconds and loses the game. New faces. New year. Same old Cowboys. This dude flashed EVERY game as a future star CB. I feel bad that he was the one to give up that last TD David Irving - Came in after a 4 game suspension and was immediately the best interior DL we have. He needs to be re-signed and starting on the DL. Zeke Elliott - He is getting back into football shape and ran super hard today. A force in the run game. Dak Prescott - Dude made some throws and kept drives going all game. Sucks that he once again rises to the occasion against Aaron Rodgers and the defense lets him down. Demarcus Lawrence - Dude had another sack after getting chipped and double teamed. Playing his butt off with no help opposite of him. DF: Terrance Williams - Can we please CUT THIS BUM. He's not a quality #2 WR, he's a good #3 WR at best. I can't believe this fool dropped an easy catch. 2nd straight week. Anthony Hitchens - Dude isn't good at pass coverage and got destroyed against the run. OL - They got their butts whooped in the 2nd half of the game. Orlando Scandrick - Close to being done. Hopefully Awuzie can allow us to move on from DBs with no ball skills. Benson Mawoya - We need another DE across from Lawrence. How do you lose contain and get outran by Aaron Rodgers smh. Every DE other than Lawrence on this team are backups at best. Jason Garrett, Linehan and Marinelli - THEY NEED TO GO. Linehan to calls pass plays in crunch time instead of running out the clock and Marinelli's defense is a thing of the past. The Boys need a new HC also. But has he come back to soon or do we not have any choice? Sometimes he seems aggressive in attacking the hole and other times he seems to be chasing the play. Well just read that Jerry is going to "bench anyone who disrespects the flag" during the national anthem. 2 Cowboys raised their fist during the anthem, one was D Irving, the other was Moore. Sometimes he seems aggressive in attacking the hole and other times he seems to be chasing the play. I think he's been thrown into the fire a bit too soon. And it's being magnified now that lee isn't there to help diagnose plays before the snap. We'll have some growing pains with him, but he's still our best option at the moment and will improve.
