There is a high false negative rate in tests - a study on autopsies of people who died from covid showed that 25% of the victims did not have any throat infection and would have shown up negative on a throat swab. The incubation period is anywhere from 2-14 days (usually up to 5 days) and you are infectious during this period. The 5 day rule is - isolation - no symptoms - and a negative test after 5 days.
