James Jones still won GM of the year and lost in the Finals. He should of taken Luka, but the "safe route" was still a  prosperous one.

JJ wasn't the GM of the Suns then

The Suns sucked until they were able to acquire Chris Paul. And Jones has shown an eye for talent taking Ayton over Luka as well as drafting guys like Jalen Smith and Cameron Johnson in the lottery, lol.

Sorry Mistake GIF

He had an influential role in the Suns front office at that point and was promoted to GM during Ayton's rookie season. Key point is that Ayton was viewed as the consensus #1 prospect over Luka Doncic who was the MVP at 18 years old in the 2nd best league in the world. Why? Because Ayton was playing on ESPN every night and very few people had ever seen Luka actually play in a live game, lol.

Cam Johnson was a good pick if you watched this years Finals. Jalen Smith should of been Haliburton. And Ayton is going to a max deal.

Everyone agrees it should of went Luka, but the safer, smarter pick at the time was certainly Ayton. Idk what the point is here. Taking a higher floor, lower ceiling guy at #1 when your job is on the line is safe and provides the franchise with immediate returns.

If you're saying who do you think has a better chance of panning out, #1 overall or the field? Everyone would obviously take the field. Feels like that doesn't need to be said.

i'm pretty sure there was no consensus lol. i think everyone knew the suns were going to pick ayton but most ppl had luka #1 easy.

Literally everyone had DeAndre Ayton as the #1 prospect. The draft express guys, the ringer guys, CBS sports, bleacher report, you name it, Ayton was ranked #1.

Was it really the safer smarter pick though? To draft a traditional big in a league that's trending away from them over a player that was just the MVP at 18 in the 2nd best league in the world?

This is one way of phrasing it to shape an argument lol Do we need to run through the list of Euro players in the top 10 that busted out over the years to understand why Luka went where he did? I'd have carpel tunnel before I got to Dragon Bender.

With Embiid coming off a 23ppg 11reb with a Philly team finishing 52-30 at 3rd in the East the prior year, yes you take someone with the same upside and no injury history at 1.

DE does intel boards, not their own opinions. Also Mike literally is a UA alumnus lol. KOC is an NBA guy. BR lol. CBS Sports lol. I'm talking about draft ppl, the ppl who cover prospects everyday, not the dudes who jump in to put out a mock cause that is only thing to do in the offszn
