I'd argue it still depends on the coverage on the back end. Clowney's best season as a pro came when JJ Watt was injured - but AJ Bouye was in the middle of his breakout season as a #1 CB. So, that kept that first read silent long enough for Clowney to get past his blocker.

Even then, the issue was that he didn't finish plays enough. He's pursue and get pressure, but he never really got sacks.

It's this exactly.  He got a few pressures, but obviously no sacks.  And he wasn't the run defending monster he used to be either.

Warren Sapp said it the best - he's a blind dog in a meat market.

He can smell the meat, he knows he's right by it... But he can't bite anything because he can't see it.

How cheap will he be next year? Guesses?

His stock has bottomed out, right?

I wouldn't be too shocked with something like 1/$6mm - sort of like what Everson Griffen got. He's no longer going to get a multi year consideration, that ship has sailed.

Not sure if any other player cost himself more than Clowney did this offseason. Reportedly refused multiple multi-years deals than played awful this year + injured himself. Don't know what he was thinking or what he thought his value was but it sure doesn't look good 6 months later...

I can't speak for recently, but in Houston - his expectation was a Khalil Mack/Aaron Donald type contract.

That would have been a disaster.
