jrry32
Interesting year for the Stallions. Some good, some bad. My verdict is that I think we're picking #1 overall. Going into the final week, I had the Jaguars above us and us roughly on par with the Lions, but those two teams winning I think would vault them past us. Here are my general takes on the roster: Offense - It's hard to figure out this unit. The OL is legitimately one of the best in the NFL. There isn't a single liability, and there is an argument that every single starter is a top 10 player at his position. Beyond the OL, it's a total mess. Zach Wilson struggled mightily as a rookie. Gainwell and Patterson showed some flashes, but neither proved they could be a #1 HB. The WR corps might have been a good group if Will Fuller and Elijah Moore had stayed healthy, but they didn't. Without those two, it was arguably the worst in the NFL. The good news is that Amon-Ra St. Brown had 51 catches for 560 yards and 5 TDs over his final 6 games. Elijah Moore was similarly impressive with 34 catches for 459 yards and 5 TDs over his final 6 games (before going on IR). Those two are building blocks at the position. James Proche seems like a solid #4 WR as well. The Tight End group is just like the HB and WR group. Nobody in it proved they could be a #1 TE. As great as the OL is, I don't think we could overcome the injuries, talent deficiencies at skill positions, and the bad QB play. I think the offense is one of the worst in the NFL. The good news is that there is promise. It'll all come down to Zach Wilson progressing and our ability to add to the skill talent on the team. Defense - On paper, this actually looks like a solid unit. The problem is that so many of the key pieces were either injured at various points in the year or had down years. With our depth not being great, the injuries would cause problems. On the DL, it's actually a solid group. And we're helped by Malcom Brown and Quinton Jefferson starting all 17 games. Problem is that Akiem Hicks was the lynchpin of the unit and missed half of the season. Brown had a down year, and Jefferson is only a solid player. Moving to the LB corps, Frank Clark had a down year. JOK is a future stud, but he missed time with injuries. Anzalone is not very good. But Chandler Jones had himself a nice year. Finally, we get to the secondary. John Johnson and Anthony Harris missed a handful of games. Harris had a down year, but he was still an above average starter. Johnson remained a very good starter when healthy. Kendall Fuller had a down year compared to his usual level of play. Elijah Molden struggled early but managed to play good football down the stretch. Troy Hill is an average starter and missed a few games. Isaiah Oliver got off to a nice starter, but suffered a season-ending injury early in the year. It's hard to evaluate this unit because it feels to me like the individual pieces would be better than the sum of the parts due to the injuries and key guys having down years. With Staley's scheme taking time to break in and so many guys missing time at random points in the season, I'm thinking the defense was very inconsistent and likely finished near the bottom of the league overall. There's promise here, but the offensive woes likely didn't help this unit either. Special Teams - Mostly good news here. McPherson had a good rookie year and looks like a promising kicker moving forward. Bojorquez is a solid punter with a huge leg. The return game should have been solid but uninspiring. While I can certainly see scenarios where this team finished with four or five wins, I am going to say they finished with two wins. I think it's hard to overcome the lack of skill talent, terrible QB play, and inconsistent defense. That's why I'm concluding that I have the #1 pick. The good news is that Brandon Staley is a promising coach, and a number of our rookies had promising years. We just need Zach Wilson to progress into the quality starter I believe he can be. Otherwise, we'll be looking for a QB again next year. Edited March 15, 2022 by jrry32
