Time will tell if Rankins would have been a better investment at 8 as opposed to Thomas at 5. You have to look back to 2018 for Rankins big production though when he had 8 sacks and 12 TFL in 16 games. For comparison David Irving had 7 sacks and 9 TFL in 8 games during the 2017 season. Over the last two seasons Rankins had 3.5 sacks, Quinton Jefferson had 6.5 sacks, and Mo Hurst had 4 sacks.

Right... that was kind of my point before you’re paying 8 Mil a year for someone who for the last two years hasn’t really produced. Something interesting to think about: Signing Rankins(8mil) would’ve costed the same as Quinton Jefferson(3mil) Solomon Thomas(3-5mil)and David Irving(1mil) combined. The 49ers had a top 10 defense and a winning record in 1/4 years he was their defensive coordinator. That defense was stacked too with Richard Sherman finally healthy, the additions of Fred Warner and Kwon Alexander at LB, and a defensive line that featured Bosa, Ford, Armstead, Buckner, and Thomas. From a talent perspective that was one of the most talented defenses we've seen in the league the last decade. If you remove their one great year in his other 3 seasons there they gave up an average of 25.1 ppg. For comparison, in 3 years with Ken Norton Jr as our defensive coordinator we gave up 24.1 ppg. We could've won a couple of more games with Norton's defense lol. Our defense was so bad last year.

The issue I have with Rankins too is that even with his injury/lack of production the Saints defense didn't miss a beat. 2018 (Rankins 8 sack year): 14th in yards allowed, 14th in points allowed, 49 sacks 2019: 13th in yards allowed, 11th in points allowed, 51 sacks 2020: 5th in yards allowed, 4th in points allowed, 45 sacks

agarcia34
Raiders plan at DT is simple and it’s not gonna make people happy but it’s have a bunch of guys compete and keep the best ones out of it. Bradley hasn’t never valued DTs and don’t look to get high sack production from it. It’s always been bring the pressure off the edges and have your DTs stay in their lanes

We signed some guys with some upside, just have to hope one (or all) of Hurst, Jefferson, Thomas, or Irving can step up.

OnlyGlove
Getting camp bodies at Dline is more important then Dbs apparently. Anybody else getting frustrated over the lack of Dbs?

Anybody else getting frustrated over the lack of Dbs? the order seems weird... this guy does appear to be more of a camp body than anything, definitely on the outside looking in re: roster spots. but apparently DBs have just been very patient testing waters. saw that from a few reporters like Josina Anderson that they're kind of biding their time hoping for better offers.
