Defense Discussion [2017]

You've got two questions:

Do Matthews and Perry play 28+ games at better than 80% health?

Do you have three competent CBs among House, Randall, Rollins, King, Gunter?

If the answer to both of those questions is yes, this defense is about a top 10 unit.

If the answer to one of those questions is yes, you're looking at a middle of the road unit.

If the answer to both of those questions is no, you're looking at a bad defenfse, probably around 25th overall.

You get a bit of a bump if Joe Thomas, Blake Martinez, or Josh Jones can give you consistent decent reps next to Jake Ryan.

Really short reply to a long post but I've been saying a lot we need a bunch of things to go right to get above 15ish. I think that's kind of my a little too high over under. I don't think we'll been near 25 in reality barring injuries and stuff though.

I'm not sure it's that pessimistic.  They have their issues (OLB depth, CB experience, etc.) but they also have a lot of upside here.

We could end up there in yards. That gets skewed on us a lot. I don't think we'll be that far down as far as reality goes. If that makes sense. Anything can happen but as lot goes bad for it to end up there methinks.

Said something similar the other day, I agree completely. Kind of sad, in a sense.

^Technically, Kendricks and House and Evans were street free agents, but you're right all the same.  I honestly would have been okay with just adding House and Kendricks.  The thing I'm worried about most, and I certainly wasn't always like this, is what Thompson does through the course of the season to compensate for injuries.

In no world should we have been content with busted up corners entering the playoffs last year.  Instead of signing somebody, anybody, we brought up undrafted rookie corners, one of which was a converted receiver.  Since we didn't do anything remotely exotic in pass coverage against the Falcons, I feel like any single veteran corner available, even Charles Tillman (who asked to be signed by the Packers, he literally posted it on Twitter), would have given us a better chance to make it to and possibly win the Super Bowl.

I'm not, never have been and never will be big on adding free agents, especially big name free agents, in the offseason.  I'm all for signing veterans in roles we missed on during the draft or lost due to injury or free agency (exactly how we did with House, Bennett/Kendricks and Evans).  After last season though, I've definitely become very much a person who sees the benefit in doing more than nothing when in season injuries wreck a position group.

I don't disagree that it would have been nice to sign somebody like Peanut Tillman but is/was he any better than what we had in the post season last year?  :/

Do you think a middle of the road defense will be good enough for us?

Yes.  At 36 years old, Charles Tillman would have been a better option than Gunter in the NFC Championship game.

I get the feeling we should have brought back Tramon Williams this offseason on a 1 year deal.  He's probably playing for the minimum.

He's not good anymore, but maybe he's not bad either.  Would be an interesting barometer to measure the young guys against.

He's a Cardinal.

Anyway, can we just once have a pass rushing version of Sam Shields?  Reggie Gilbert is, by every indication, our next So'oto/Elliot.  Can we just once have a breakout performance by an undrafted pass rusher instead of cornerback?  Please?

I agree that it would have been, at the very least, worth a shot to bring in Tillman and/or another free-agent...however, I disagree that he was for sure a clear upgrade over Gunter. Was he in football shape? Did his speed/quickness dramatically diminish since his last time playing?

Speaking of Reggie Gilbert, did you see that rep of him against Bakh during the FN practice? Pretty impressive. It would be a huge relief if he can provide something this year, even if it's only as an occasional pass rush specialist.

Someone noticed 93 in the backfield a few times.
