How Are Those Rookies Doing?

2nd round Dugger saw 11 snaps and actually should be an integral part going forward

2nd round pick Uche was a healthy scratch

3rd picks Keene and Asiati weren't featured but should as the season goes on

3rd round pick Jennings is a rotational LB/edge

5th round pick Rohrwasser is on the practice squad 

6th round pick Onwenu is a rotational RT, did actually see about 20 snaps I believe

undrafted RB Taylor looked pretty good.

 

Looks like most of them will play a lot as the season goes on but eased in due to no preseason.

Ravens:

- Patrick Queen. Nominated for NFL ROTW honors. Had 8 tackles, 1 sack, 1 FF. All over the field. Had some plays where his angles could have been better, but a good 1st game for a rookie.

- JK Dobbins. With how our OL looked against the Browns (not good), he was our best RB in the game. Also capped off a quality performance by adding 2 TDs and qualified for NFL ROTW honors as well. Ravens were the only team with two players on the list.

- Justin Madubuike. Was making an impact in camp. Got rolled up on within a pile. Missed the first game and could be out for an additional week. Waiting on the injury report to see.

- Devin Duvernay. Had action on a screen pass for 12 yards. Also had a nice kickoff return attempt where he almost made something happen before getting tripped up from behind. Didn’t standout but didn’t disappoint either. 4th WR option.

- Malik Harrison. Tough and physical LBer. Outside of a broken play due to a late substitution of Calais Campbell (where Harrison failed to have edge contain on a Nick Chubb run), Harrison was just as good, if not better, than Queen. He had a major tipped pass that should’ve led to an interception by another defender (but was unfortunately dropped). He’s not a full time starter. Shares time with veteran LB LJ Fort (who also had a quality game).

- Tyre Phillips. Beat our DJ Fluker and Ben Powers to win the starting RG competition. In the game he was okay. Considering he had no preseason to really gel with the guys it was solid. He got good initial push on his blocks, but needs to do a much better job on both his blocking angles to better seal off movement as well as do a better job of sustaining his blocks. He allowed too much separation after his initial push and that led to his defender making more plays than they should have. That said as a fresh rookie, he was probably the 3rd best starter along the OL in week 1.

- Ben Bredeson. N/A. He didn’t start. He was in on the RG competition, but failed to standout. Nothing to report.

- Broderick Washington. Likely a good DL in the making. Had some plays where he got exceptional push into the backfield, he also had a few other snaps where his technique wasn’t quite as sound and he wasn’t a factor. Had more good than bad.

- James Proche. Won the punt returner job. Had a bad gaffe on a play where he should’ve called for a fair catch, but could’ve been nerves. He bounced back with some quality returns.

- Geno Stone. N/A. Nothing notable to report.

For Miami:

1st Round - Tua - Didn't play

1st Round - Austin Jackson - Played 100% of the snaps at LT.  Terrific in pass protection (0 sacks/hurries/pressures/hits allowed) but was meh in the run game.  

1st Round - Noah Igbinoghene - Played 60% of snaps, and was both inside and outside.  He didn't really get challenged, with the Pats running at will, so not much to really report.

2nd Round - Robert Hunt - Played 2 snaps.  Currently the primary backup T/G option.

2nd Round - Raekwon Davis - Played 27 snaps and was all-around bad.  Manhandled in the run game.  No push in the pass game. 

3rd Round - Brandon Jones - Played 55% of snaps.  Had a boneheaded penalty, but also made 10 tackles and didn't miss any.  Solid debut for him.

4th Round - Soloman Kindley - Played 100% of snaps at RG.  Played a really solid game.  I think he did allow a pressure or two in the pass game, but he was stronger than Jackson in the run game.  

5th Round - Jason Strowbridge - Healthy scratch.

5th Round - Curtis Weaver - Hurt in TC after flashing nothing.  Was waived and picked up by Browns.

6th Round - Blake Ferguson - He, uh, did the long-snapping.  No terrible snaps, so I guess that's good?

7th Round - Malcolm Perry - Healthy scratch.

Our first round rookie played ~ 18 snaps and gave up 2 TD's, including the really long ~70 yarder.

Not that 9er fans notice, just complaining about injuries/penalties when in reality they just took advantage of a very young LB and them being in the game centered around that.

Our 2nd round pick did amazing.

For the Chiefs, good things. 

1.32 RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire LSU - Top Rookie RB in the league so far.

2.31 LB Willie Gay Jr. Mississippi State - Played almost all the coverage snaps, but did not play otherwise.

3.32 OL Lucas Niang Texas Christian - IL Out for the year. He was probably drafted with a redshirt year in mind. 

4.32 DB L'Jarius Sneed Louisiana Tech - He played 94% of the regular snaps. Was playing most of the snaps before Ward injured his hand.

5.32 DL Michael Danna Michigan - Played one snap short of 50%. Looks to be a rotation DE. This is going to be a good one. 

7.23 DB Thakarius Keyes - On roster but not eligible for game #1

UDFA DT Tershawn Wharton - Made the roster out of Division III Missouri-Rolla. He played 14 snaps after Saunders dislocated his elbow.

Not sure why you added this bit in about niner fans or why you felt it was necessary. If it was to just dig at the fans for some reason, I'd ask that you not do that.

Pretty much this. Overall I'd say it's been roughly as hoped/expected, just with Sneed looking fantastic, and Gay being relegated to special teams, when most of us would've predicted that being the other way around.

CEH - leads the league in rushing, looked pretty good on opening night. Great vision, cuts, and had the most yards after contact. 
 

Willie Gay - special team snaps only

Lucas Niang - opted out

L’Jairius Sneed - Started, played 93% of the defensive snaps. Played really well, Watson targeted him and Sneed held his own. Even got an interception 
 

Mike Danna - got some pressures in the DE rotation. 
 

Bopete Keyes - inactive, might see some snaps with the Ward injury 

UDFA: Tershawn Wharton DT - local kid, cool story. Should be getting more snaps with the Saunders injury

We had a bazillion picks so I'll just keep it to the top picks.

 

Tua - Apparently was an up and down camp for him which was to be expected. Seemed to turn it on and catch on as camp moved along. Could end up seeing the field a little bit down the road if Fitzpatrick struggles.

Austin Jackson - Was touted as a project by many but surprisingly looked very sharp and polished in his first pro game. Obviously some things to improve on but pass protection was on point and the game didn't seem to big for him. He earned the right to be the starting LT right out of the gate.

Noah Igbinoghene - Nickel CB that was part of the secondary who allowed the less passing yards for week 1. Obviously has a lot to do with who they were up against but he didn't look out of place and no glaring mistakes or wow plays that I can recall. Overall quiet game but that is a good thing.

Robert Hunt - Competed with 4th round pick Solomon Kindley for starting RG position and lost. Currently backup RG-RT, we'll see if he gets to start further down the line as he hopefully improves.

Raekwon Davis - Apparently looked like a monster in practice but was pretty average during the game, which seems to follow a trend from his college days. Did not notice him at all tbh.

Good list. It's actually wild to see that many rookies get that much playing time in a season opener - Harbaugh usually brings guys along slowly but it really seems like everyone other than Stone and Bredesen already has at least a rotational role to build off of. That is probably inflated a bit by Proche and Duvernay getting immediate work as returners but the fact that they dialed up a designed screen for Duvernay in the opening game maybe suggests they do want to manufacture ways to get him involved.

Just seeing too many things (not everyone of course and not here explicitly) around the interwebs about how 9ers should have absolutely beat the Cardinals and we won luckily because of penalties.   Just some bent up frustration of how we don't deserve the win. 

But, our rookie did almost cause us to lose giving up huge plays and 2 TD's in very limited time, which was unfortunate, but he got benched fairly quickly.  Hopefully it's just part of the learning curve.  Certainly some concerns with him coming out.

Pretty much. 

I didn't know Arnette was playing with a bum hand. IIRC, one of the criticisms of him was not being a willing tackler and I spent Sunday doing the 🤦🏼‍♂️ because of it. The bum hand excuses it enough in my book. As for the Anderson whiff, it's a rookie mistake. It'll happen. Harris didn't do his job either, arguably in worse fashion.

As for Robertson, I think I saw him onn a couple ST plays, but yeah, quiet day. Probably will be that way for him and Simpson for a while with the depth in front of them. 

Ruggs was as you said. As for Edwards, the targets and catches will increase. I want to say I saw him with a couple key blocks on outside runs though, so I'd say he had some kind of silent impact at least.

The rest of our rookies haven't played because of the insane depth we have on the New York Football Jets.
